- Peugeot Sport 508 PSE Late Brake Show full review. Is Peugeot's most powerful car also the best performance family PHEV on sale in 2021? Peugeot's new 508 PSE PHEV 4WD isn't just their most powerful production car ever, but also a handsome, luxurious and practical one too. This flagship is officially named the (deep breath) 508 PSE SW Hybrid4 360 e-EAT8 4WD and, in simple terminology, it is a plug-in hybrid 360PS (355hp) family estate with AWD and the ability to combine all power for 0-62 in 5.2 secs, or drive electric only for 26 miles.
In a world where SUVs get less useful, crossovers blend into one another and many people still fear a full EV, how many cars can tick the box of driving electric only, having a decent sized boot, feeling frisky like a GTI of old, and not get stolen off your drive (we're looking at you Audi RS4)? Jonny tries to explore all of the 508 PSE's features without getting too bogged down in the £54k price tag, and it seems to be clear that Peugeot's mojo is returning with more swagger than ever.

Estates all day long over SUV! This is Peugeot back at is best styling! The french cars are overlooked often. Let’s not forget that, they have won Le Mans using a for of this tech too😎
I think the Ferrari pursoangue will combine estate proportions and suv off roadiness with variable air springs. Ferrari will suddenly create a new segment in my view.
Sorry to nitpick, but Peugeot's last LM win was just before the hybrids appeared on the scene. The 908 HDI FAP was a diesel non-hybrid.
I am with you. Bring back the wagons. Also, can we finally get the French cars here in the USA?! I wonder what their barrier to entry is now.
I have always been a fan of Peugeot and Citroen, but they stopped sending cars to our shores since before I was born.
I totally agree, i recently had to move from an estate to a 7 seater SUV, but if there was an option of 7 seater estate still there I would have chosen that all day long. Why did the 7 seater estate die out?? This car just does it for me so much, I love it
@@c04427041 did you check out the S-Max as an option? Also, sadly the other great 7 seater, the Renault Espace, has been turned into an SUV as well.
Glad you enjoyed the car Jonny!

Your new badge looks like the old Proton badge - fire your marketing team and promote your lead car designer to “more leadier car designer” they’re doing awesome!
@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 Hi, not at the moment. We're heading towards electrified versions of all models while also exploring alternative fuel options such as the hydrogen hybrid vans launching next year. ^Martin
@@LNDG1 Our new badge is based on one of our original badges, so I guess the old Proton badge looked like an old Peugeot badge? ^Martin
@@peugeotuk ok thats a shame. Good luck anyway , sure it will do well for you 👍
Like I've said before, Peugeot are on a roll at the moment.
I really think they took that TopGear episode to heart that relentlessly mocked them.
To be fair the 7 generation was pretty awful, the 207 is meh, the 307 is horrible, the 407 is pretty bad and the 607 is kinda alright but I never see them.
Then again it kinda is hard to beat the 6 generation, especially the 406.
I’m a bit of a BMW and VW Golf GTI fan boy, but this is an absolute gem of a car. I’d buy one in a heartbeat.
Back in 1988, we lived in Tanzania and our car was a white 505 estate. A beast of a car, and a beauty in its own right. It’s great to see that spirit of the 505 is alive in this beautiful 508 PSE.
The range of this channel is why you're great Jonny. How many other 68 Charger owners will get this enthusiastic about a Peugeot estate? Love it!
🤘🏽
Man of the people 🙌🏻
But look at it! It'd be near impossible NOT to get enthused about it!
I don't have the money for either but if it was over this vs say a Tesla? I'll take the French Bred!
This is why I love watching Johnny: he has eclectic taste like mine. I have a Porsche 996, an 80s Camaro and I’d love this Peugeot as a daily.
Peugeot's design team need a round of applause. Really good looking car. 👏
It's not just this one all their cars are getting really good looking
@@adamski5977 yeah i agree. Everytime i see one of their cars on the road I'm drawn to it.
Agreed! What a beautiful design. I'd love one of these for some proper post-covid road trips!
@@CalumRaasay Definitely!
Pug merged with Fiat so design is not all pugs.
The 508 always catches my eye when I see them around, and yes they are 'rare'. We live in an age of brand conformity, so many people actually want/yearn/pay to be seen with select brands, and that includes the dullness of BMW/Audi ownership (even when their designs are something of a joke to some eyes...). I have no desire whatsoever to be a BMW owner, nor anything similar. I'm with the likes of Peugeot all the way...
I have the Peugeot 508 SW First Edition in Twilight Blue with Red Leather, there is only 23 SW First Editions in the UK so this is a very rare model. You are also right that it does turn heads where ever I go.
I really like the look of this.
Maybe you could make a cheap, superficial, poorly researched and content-free video about it? Just make sure to do it while there is hype around it for maximum views, and remember to keep it very one-dimensional and aimed at children.
@@Ottoplemeniti Need a hug?
damn i havent watched ur vids in a while!
I call the color "Shine Dark primer". Sorry, but i hate all those gray solid colors.
It would have been beautiful in the red metallic they have on the normal 508.
Peugeot Design Lab has been going strong lately, the concepts that it's based on (Extinct and Exalt) are really nice
Even the low spec 508s are head turners, Peugeot have really nailed the design of these.
So nice to see Toyota and Peugeot making interesting cars again.
"A BMW only hopes to look this good".
Could not agree more, Peugeot has really stepped up their design game. Really nice to see that they put some effort into the interior as well! Nice review!
This even has the kick on the C pilar that used to be bmws trade mark but is missing on there gastly recent stuff.
If only it wouldn't have Peugot electronics. My good do I hate my Psa van. Stupid power savings and stuffs that can't be disabled. Already that 2 hand steering wheel waring makes me walk away 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
Looks are only opinion, I much prefer BMW 3 series to this.
The M340i is about the same price, it's better looking, MUCH faster, MUCH better handling, higher quality especially interior, and won't depreciate like a rock thrown off a tower block.
@@DjNikGnashers
*Marginally faster to 60, woo.
Looks are subjective (eye of the beholder and all that) but this Pug is quite a bit better looking with a much better interior.
BMW stuff is pretty well screwed together but so is modern Peugeot stuff. As for handling there's absolutely no way you can actively know the BMW will outhandle a like for like (saloon v saloon, estate v estate) just yet...
@@skylined5534 BMW's are generally 50/50 weight distribution front-to-rear, and RWD.
This makes them brilliant to drive, and why they brag about 'ultimate driving machine' tagline.
They drive better than Audi's, VW's etc, and those brands drive better than any Peugeot.
I have yet to drive a Peugeot (or even see any review of one), that drives even close to the BMW equivalent.
The M340i isn't marginally faster, it's a LOT faster. Increment gains, ie the faster a car accelerates, the more an increasingly smaller margin will make a difference.
The M340i is about a second quicker to 60, and when your talking 4 to 6 second acceleration times, 1 second is massive.
I work at a multi franchaise dealership, one which includes Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall & Mazda, so I know exactly how 'well screwed together' any Peugeot is.
I also own a 2017 BMW, for comparison.
There is no comparison, quite frankly, any BMW is on another level in performance, handling, and build quality.
@@DjNikGnashers
1 second isn't much in regards to an irrelevant form of a perceived performance datum.
Through gear acceleration is where it's at. To that end I wouldn't be all that shocked to find this far larger, heavier ESTATE car wasn't much slower across the quarter mile.
As for the 50/50 balance myth, it's just something dreamed up by canny manufacturers to sell cars to people like you. Far more important is distribution of mass. True enough you don't want a huge discrepancy in weight distribution but seeing as most modern cars will have at worst 60/40 and more typically closer the average BMW's 53/47 isn't an advantage. Clever marketing though.
As an American and fan of station wagons and hatchbacks, I would totally be interested in this if it was sold in the USA.
Can't you import it?
@@whyalwaysme2522 It might be possible, but it could costs 10s of thousands of dollars to make a car "legal" to drive in USA. Unless it falls under 25 year old rule, which of course this doesn't. Plus you wouldn't have any place to have it serviced as that make does not sell cars in USA.
These will be available in the USA, PSA group that own Peugeot are buying into Chrysler. I think the European PSA group cars like this may be called Stelantis?
@@nk53nxg Stellantis has confirmed it will not sell Peugeot and other brands besides Alfa in USA. (www.caranddriver.com/news/a35473579/peugeot-no-us-plans-stellantis/#:~:text=Stellantis%20Confirms%20Peugeot%20Not%20Coming,Romeo%20in%20the%20U.S.%20market.)
@@uksucksme Ahhhh, I never heard they cancelled Peugeot and Citroen return to the US. That is a shame really, although Chrysler Dodge and Jeep would probably still benefit from the powerful, fuel efficient small capacity turbo charged petrol engines PSA developed. Along with the strong diesel engines PSA posses. The Peugeot and Citroen brands may not return to the USA, but the more modern bodyshell designs and other tech may be used in smaller high volume Chrysler and Dodge vehicles increasing sales and making them more competitive. Nobody wants a Dodge Charger or Challenger without a V8, so I guess these will remain the all American talisman or halo vehicles of the brand.
Lovely, but at £55k I suspect these will be a rare sight on U.K. roads indeed
Hope we at least see more of the normal 508 SW - entry level £30k, hybrid around £37k.
Yeah, but at 3 years old given it’s a big Peugeot, can you imagine how much of a bargain this is going to be😁
@@OldCarsNewVan there are BRAND NEW 508sw (less than a dozen miles) for £10k+ off of retail at dealers
@@OldCarsNewVan My thoughts exactly - I can't imagine this will fall as badly as some but you have to be looking at knocking at least 20-25K of that asking price.
Nobody? Not one? Really - good to know 😂
That does look very nice. I would certainly consider one if I were a sensible man with kids and places to go. Congrats on the new sponsor, namesake. This channel is going from strength to strength.
that mate, is a classic wolf-in-sheeps-clothing car for proper Dads. Loving the little steering wheel.
I bought my Peugeot 508 GT a year ago here in Perth and I love it. I’ve had plenty of people say to me in parking lots what a nice car it is and I see people looking at it on the freeways.
Not the best naming, but this has to be one of the most handsome vehicle that was released is the recent years.
'Not the best naming'
There's an understatement if ever I heard one....!!!
Wow! That’s one good looking estate! Peugeot are back on the shortlist for the next family car.
Love the way this guy talks. He always covers such interesting cars too. Another great video!
Another chef d'oeuvre Jonny, keep up this VERY HIGH standard.
This is indeed a beautiful car, elegant and classy on the outside and interesting and different on the inside. I can only imagine PSA had a massive clear out in their design team a few years ago, and quite right too after the deep ocean goppers of the early 2000’s. Bravo Peugeot 👏👏👏
Agreed, a shame the price isn't as beautiful as the car, £55k is comical when that gets you a Model 3, Polestar 2, low-end i-PACE, etc. This will be a used-car classic only and a rare one.
"deep ocean goppers" 🤣
Bit harsh! But probably fair. Our old 207 has been great though, next stop 250k
@@nomoreheroes93
I quite like the Polestar and the Jag looks ok. Pass on the Teslarse though. I'd still take the Peugeot over any of your examples but the Polestar would be a hot second place.
@@nomoreheroes93 To be fair, there's no mid to high-end EV estates yet, just the cheaper MG 5. If you want the practicality of an estate in an EV you kinda have to wait or go SUV right now.
@@nomoreheroes93 I would definitely own a 508 PSE before I own any of those. maybe if Polestar does a real hybrid wagon then I would be interested but then I would be buying it when most would be total shitboxes.
Badge snobbery won't just make them a rare sight but will no doubt make them depreciate quickly too. A great used buy after 5 years.
Definitely. Just hope someone buys it in black with the panoramic roof!
It’s a shame if it had an Audi badge it would sell really well. But I’m as guilty as anyone.
The thing is, parts are ridiculously expensive, and in 5 years time it will be long out of warranty, and need lots of expensive parts to keep it running.
No thanks.
@@DjNikGnashers I generally run older cars and repairs are only ever a small fraction of depreciation costs on a new car.
@@robsmith1a That's a sweeping statement, and quite frankly, means nothing.
Not all 'older cars' depreciate the same, and not all 'older cars' have parts which are as expensive.
French car parts are ridiculously expensive, and it's where they (the manufacturer), makes their money.
Hyundai used to be cheap cars to buy, until a couple of years ago, and even their prices have shot up. But, the ethos was, sell the cars cheaply, with a great 5 year warranty, and people will keep buying them every 5 years. The people who drive out-of-warranty Hyundai's, pay the price because their parts are stupidly expensive.
It is the same with French cars too.
Buy an expensive car (expensive to buy new), and you might be surprised that the parts are actually reasonable, and cheaper than a cheap-to-buy-new car.
The company has already made their profit from the new car purchase, and as such, parts are more reasonable to buy.
I work in the motor trade by the way, and I do understand how the whole thing works.
I’m in Australia & drive a 2017 Skoda Superb 206kw 4WD wagon/Estate. Before this I had a Merc GLC. I will never go BACK to a SUV! My Skoda is beautiful to look at, extremely comfortable, handles really well, has heaps of go & soooo capacious! Everyone I’ve taken in it, love it. Having said that if I was to update the Peugeot would be either very high on my list or at the top! The 508 has had fantastic reviews here in Oz! As for this PSE, I’m not sure if we’ll see it...unfortunately. This wagon is a stunner. I think you need to go get yourself a room, but leave the car at home ok?🤭😉 Cheers from Australia 👍🏼🇦🇺😎🍻
PUG styling has been spot on over the last 4 years.
They went through a really rough patch asides the RCZ which a handsome little beast. They're definitely back a the top of their game now though!
Couldn't agree more, absolutely fantastic designs.
Fantastic video on an excellent looking car. I think the wider track really helps the stance.
Yes I would consider one as a replacement for my VW Touran here in France. I am pleased that estates haven’t disappeared completely but a full BEV version would be the perfect alternative for me. Thanks again Jonny for some superb content
Thanks Jonny. My new "I want one now!!!" cars. It's everything. And I love station wagons. It's wickedly cool looking, quick, handles, has optional 4wd, looks brilliant inside, and I would be saving the planet every time I gave it a bit of welly!! Peugeot have absolutely nailed this one.
I saw lots of 508s when driving across Europe over the last year.
Even the poverty model saloon looks great, and they're available in some great colours.
The Octavia VRS estate outside my house is starting to look a little nervous... What a brilliant thing this is! I can't believe I'm saying this but in a year or two I may be walking in to a Peugeot dealership.
It definitely should...
I'd keep the vRS if it was tdi
A good looking peugeot! I can't believe it. I really like this. Well done Peugeot
Just bring it here as a Dodge.
Good to see a reviewer enjoy living with a car and not just rating it based on dynamics and performance.
I'm more exited than I should be. I love a quick estate. Estates in general are a dying breed. I love this.
Great review Jonny!
Totally agree on the badge snobbery point. I moved from German cars to a Peugeot 308 SW last year. Mega handsome in GT trim, great spec for not a lot of money. Nice feeling to be supporting Estates rather than meh SUVs too!
If anyone didn't get it, it isn't nardo grey, it is selenium grey 😂
Thank you for the review.
I love your videos, I think they are always to the point and feel really natural. Keep up the great work Jonny!
Nice. The 508 SE & 508 PSE really are a niche little gem in the German monotonousness. If they would only do a 508 Coupe...
Sans Butresses 😆
As a 308 GTi owner I love to hear the spirit of the GTi lives on, as a manual hot hatch is no longer a thing! This may be the next car...
Abarth 595 comp is manual... Just sayin
That's not a hot hatch though. 180bhp and a small car.
@@sl1d3r1984 no disrespect because I’ve owned a punto and a bravo sport tjet (their top model that was in abarth). And they are great. But my gti is better. We have 270hp in it. So I can kinda of give an apples to apples opinion.
Pierre - Paul Mattei has been with Peugeot since 2009 and made a huge impact of their car designs over the years
Sensational review as always. It’s weird how watching a video on a hybrid and not an EV feels really ‘old hat’ when I’m so used to EV talk now. I don’t even drive an EV!
The 508 looks absolutely fantastic (in standard spec as well), and if I were in the market for a hybrid, I'd definitely put this one on my short list! One of my friends is a long time Peugeot driver, and I'm going to try persuading him to go for this one :-)
This channel is hands down, the best channel on CZcams!! Such a variety of fantastically produced content!! 🤙🏻
I love the looks in and out.
I'm 23, and this interests me more than any other new car on the market. Clever technology, fantastic design and excellent quality. If I won the lottery I would genuinely consider this as my daily over anything else
Very cool to hear this Ollie.
I like the way you edited in the "aspirational B roll" Very smooth Johnny.
How much I enjoyed your enthusiastic presentation! I believe this is the truest Peugeot model, the most faithful to its DNA. The design of the front can only be Peugeot and I love it!
What a cracking looking vehicle, and an estate! Just the way it should be 😍
Always loved estates and this is a handsome car! Welcome back Peugeot
finally real 360 camera, after all these years... bravo:)
Best looking Peugeot I've ever seen.
I do like a European estate car, but I've never seen the 508 before, damn fine looking car with the PSE kit on it, thanks Jonny for another interesting review, Rj in Oz
Saw one of these in green a few months ago, looked FANTASTIC.
I fondly remember my 405 MI16 that I bought new which never missed a beat.
I’m not in the market, but if I were, this would most certainly be on my shortlist. Probably the only one on there, come to think of it.
Ive got that 16v engine in my 205 currebtly at around 190 bhp. It showed an s4 a clean pair of heels last night.........
Loved Peugeots for a few years now. Stylish and interesting across the range. I have the 308 in GT Line spec and the 1.2l 3-cylinder turbo engine is so much fun. Silly torque all through the range and corners superbly without hurting ride quality. And the go-kart steering wheel is superb. This 508 is the stuff of dreams, I'll have to wait a few years. :)
I've the 2016 308 GTI, such an amazing car, already 90.000km done with it and it's an absolute blast.
Just a shame Peugeot went full retard on the brake, discs are kinda pricey and not really necessary for a 270hp fwd, also the iCockpit suck donkey ass, especially the old SMEG system.
Aside of that, i don't regret my spending at all.
I second that! I loved my 308GTline daily driver. The sport button was sublime. I just wish at least one of the twin exhausts was genuine.🤣
@@henryhol8538 wow I didn’t know it was fake. They did a good job hiding that.

Obviously once they have dropped to mid £30k. £55k is crazy.
I don't think so, I've heard it so many times, my next car will be this because it's stylish and looking cool but the end of the day you still pick an Audi, BMW or Mercedes.
Really liked the plain wagon when I saw this at Geneva in 2019, this is even cooler! I’d love to see something like this from them on their SUV/Crossover range as well! Nice review as always!
Finally they are designing good looking cars! Peugeot were seriously making nad looking cars! This is lovely. Thanks for this review.

Everything was going so well right up until the end, then you mentioned the price.
Price was a bit of shock for me too but I guess everyone thinks in monthly amounts these days, it's pretty rare for someone to buy a car outright
If that's a shock, try and configure the equivalent V60 hybrid...
I have a 2013 508SW which is a great car in of itself. If I could justify the price I would love one those new ones.

Hey mate I'm really enjoying what your doing with the late break show and you've really peaked my interest with your fab presenting style and individual cars. I'd definitely look at the 508 looks epic!
I reckon Peugeot are genuinely number 1 in the styling department right now.
Mazda have been on a roll for a number of years now as well.
@@ZesPak that EV thing they put out is just... Weird though.
I'd pick Alfa ahead of them but given Alfa only make two cars right now Pug probably wins by numbers
I'd have said Renault have had an excellent run though the styling seems to be going off the boil a little now.
Lol
Jonny I'm sold! Should I be worried that a Peugeot estate has excited me more than any other car for years? Probably....
It is not your fault if the german cars got boring
Post 2012 Peugeot are really well made.
Thanks for the shout out for estates, and especially for ones as beautiful as this. Spot on too about French cars in the 'luxury' sector. I'd no idea the 508 has been about since 2010 (this version since 2018). I can't say I've ever seen one on UK roads. Such as shame. I saw a Citroen C6 twice and had palpitations.

Don’t worry mate, with Peugeot depreciation it’ll be a tenth of the price by next year 😅
@@scunnerdarkly4929 Especially with it being a PHEV, for some reason they depreciate faster than others since people are spooked about buying a used EV and remaining battery life, even though with liquid cooling and proper charge management it will be fine for hundreds of thousands of km and thus an amazing bargain.
I agree it’s expensive but you don’t have to buy the top of the range model. I believe there’s a mild hybrid version lower down that looks just as good.
@@anydaynow01 are you sure about this? In 5 years time, who would buy and ICE only car?
That is bloody gorgeous ❤️❤️ please let my lottery numbers come up. When this came up I had to have a watch, glad I did. That is one lovely Puggie!
*TLBS* has 250K subscribers! Wow. Crack On Jonny! Another great segment. The PS 508 PSE EAT... I *ATE* it all!
Spoooowwwwwwwwaarrrrtttttt
Very nice car, I could see myself driving that. Until it told me to put my hands back on the wheel and then is shout eff off!
I think as cars progress I'll be regressing into older, simpler vehicles.
It even tells you off if you've been on the phone too long lol
Great review serious about trying one of these out currently running sq5
Great review !!!
We have gone back to Peugeot, and both run 2008 GT lines, and have a Partner van, love them.
Peugeot's designs are on point at the moment. You can lease one of these for £700 ish a month over 4 years, which is significantly more than a 540i touring lease, that's going to be a tough sell.
Jesus! £700???
Great Video Jonny. Really like this car. Looks great from that rear side profile.
Love this Johnny! Well done sir, about time people look at estates outside of the teutonic four!
spaaaauuuughtttt-ah
He says it wrong so many times I knew someone else would notice 👍🏻
Peugeot are on a bit of a roll. in the BEV small hatch segment the e208 is, head and shoulders, the best looking of the PSA clones.
Great review Jonny. Would really like one of these, now that the prices are falling for ex demo models they are very tempting !
Great to see Peugeot back to producing handsome motors, and seemingly cars that are good to drive.
Disappointed by your pronunciation of "Sport" Jonny, I'm sure Rich Porter is devastated
