Miep had great memory very sharp to remember almost all details that happen decades ago.I can't even remember what happened to me two weeks ago and I'm 21. She also was in good shape, climbing the stairs at that age in high heels, you go girl! In all seriousness may she rest in peace in the arms of God.

That's true but I also think she remembered those details because if you think about it ... all those details stayed burned in the back of her mind at how troublesome it all was. Miep was a great woman.

Most of them do. I think it was such a traumatic time. My grandfather was in the Dutch navy and was a

She never would accept that she was a hero, would always say she was a normal person doing the right thing. And both are true. But today it is so much rarer to find people like her. May her memory forever be a blessing.🌺

There was a cleaning lady who worked in the building named Lena van Hartzog ( spelling is more than likely incorrect). A couple of weeks before the arrest, this woman, Lena , approached Bep V, and indignantly asked her if she knew that Mr. Kleiman and Mr. Kugler were hiding Jews in the secret annex. Lena said that she had a son at home, and that, if the office was ever raided, they would arrest everyone, including her and her son, who was himself sort of hiding at her home to avoid being sent to forced labor weapons camp in Germany. Bep scolded Lena, saying that she could get people killed, spreading malicious, idle gossip such as this. Lena approached Bep AGAIN, a few days before the arrest, and said , basically, that she was sorry, but that she could no longer just sit in the center of a trap that could snap shut at any moment. Bep discussed this conversation with Miep and the two bosses. They even spoke of moving the people in the annex to a more secure location, but they ultimately decided that there was no other place in Holland where two whole families +1, could safely hide. They did not tell the hiders about this , the newest calamity. On August 4,1944, at around 10:00, an initially anonymous person phoned Gestapo headquarters, and whispered that there were Jews hiding upstairs at 263 Prisengracht, in a secret room behind a swinging bookcase. post-war, the Nazi who had answered the call said that the voice belonged to a woman. While the arrest was happening, Lena silently put on her coat and exited the building. She never came back to her job. A few days after the arrest, the betrayer appeared at the police station, and collected $7.50 ( or, Dutch Guilders) per Jew that had been caught, for a grand total of $60.00 Guilders..... None of the Nazis could later recall who collected the reward, and their name was given, but, unfortunately, NOT recorded . Lena died in the 1950s. I honestly think her actions indicate guilt.

1lricardo The latest information appears to show that no one betrayed the people in hiding, that it could have been a random search. In any case, it was a terribly sad ending.

@jessica4hever It's common for houses in Amsterdam to have incredibly steep stairs. When I stayed in a hotel there, the stairs were almost vertical! This is because, I think, in Amsterdam, they pay for their house based on the area they take up, so houses are built extremely tall and narrow. Miep is probably used to steep stairs, and is probably fitter than most for this reason. She's still an amazing woman! I believe she has passed away now though...?
