    I’ve recovered all the interior cushions on a 27 Erickson and cockpit cushions from scratch, and cushions for my truck camper bed using these videos. The first one was a little rough but then it got easier. However for each new project I come back to the video for review!

    Very instructive, the narrative is clear and well-paced, covering a lot of steps without getting boring. Good camera work. (Kudos to the camera man and director). I will have to re-watch the math calculations section, but was grateful you didn't belabor the figuring during construction. I can go back to study this as needed. And, best of all, I learned a new and simpler method for inserting the zipper. I just need to remember that pull!

    I'm confused. If we are cutting the foam 1/4" bigger all around (than the pattern...not counting wedge), and we add 1/4" on the fabric (bigger than the pattern).....isn't the fabric then the same size as the foam? Why not just use the cut foam to determine the fabric cut lines?

    Such a great and instructive video. One could fairly confidently follow the directions and make their own cushions, however I think it also serves as a guide to how fairly priced professionals are when making these cushions. It would have been useful to know how long the project took in labour hours from a professional's point of view.

    I have material that unravels a lot. In order to prevent that from happening with the zipper plaque I add approximately 1/4" to my boxing. Then after cutting the fold with scissors and before splaying the fabric open, I use the hot knife on the edges. No more raveling threads around the zipper!

    Great video! I have one question. I can’t figure out if the seam allowance on the cushion is 3/8”, why do you add 1/4” around the perimeter of the pattern? I’m missing something there. I thought the extra distance added to the pattern IS the seam allowance. I’m guessing my definition of “seam allowance” is wrong! Thanks!

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 6 měsíci

      We want the cushion cover to compress the foam a little for a less wrinkly fabric. So, the top plate is slightly smaller than the foam size after sewing.

  • @PrimeReal
    @PrimeReal Před 4 lety

    I have no idea what is happening around 19:45. I've watched it several times. Paused the video, and really just have no idea what is happening. I know it has something to do with lining up the stripes from the previous cushion and a seam allowance, but what does it have to do with the additional 1/4 inch? What even is the purpose of the 1/4th inch vs the seam allowance?

    I'm confused why you add 1/4" all around and not the seam allowance. What am I missing?

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 5 lety +1

      Usually for cushions we sew a seam allowance of 3/8” to a 1/2” all around. True the 3/8” or 1/2" seam allowance is not taken into account intentionally because we want a tight fitting cover over the foam. The foam will also compress slightly when the smaller cover is in place, taking out most wrinkles in the fabric. The wrinkles will tend to get worse with more use over the years, so the tighter cover will help to reduce this fact.

    • @patriciaforgette4121
      @patriciaforgette4121 Před 5 lety

      @@SailriteDIY Thanks, that clarifies the 1/4" thing. I thought however cutting the foam with extra dimensions all around would make the fit tighter.

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 5 lety

      @@patriciaforgette4121 The foam will compress slightly due to the fabric cover being slightly smaller in size. So, the extra size of foam will compensate for this fact making the cushion fill the space it is designed for.

    WHY was there no polyester/Dacron batting installed around the foam (or silk wrap film) before inserting into the cover? Breathability??

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 2 lety

      When using Dry Fast foam a silk film should not be used. Why? Dry Fast foam should be allowed to breath, so it if gets wet it will dry out quickly. A polyester batting is used to give the cushions a more rounded look along the edges, we decided that was not desired for the cushions we were making. Polyester Batting could have been used, if you want a more rounded looking edge.

  • @thebeattielife9528
    @thebeattielife9528 Před 7 měsíci

    How do you address curvature? Some of the edges aren’t a straight edge, but curved.

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 7 měsíci

      If the edges of the top plate are curved simply cut the top and bottom plates to match the curve. If you cut your foam slightly oversized (1/4" on all edges) then after your foam is cut to size you can simply lay the foam over your fabric and trace around it. That would then incorporate the curve along the edge in the plates. If that does not answer your question email me more details or photos to ericg@sailrite.com

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 10 měsíci

      A professional canvas shop may charge between $2000 to $5000 for a total v-berth cushion project (two V-Berth Cushions and one Keystone cushion, 3 cushions totoal). That would include labor and materials. It will take about 4 hours labor per each cushion for a total of about 12 hours. Typically a shop will charge about $75 to $95 per hour. Use this PDF link to figure hours for a professional: marinefabricatormag.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/24/2018/02/timeline-standards.pdf Let me know if you have more questions.

    Is it merely a preference to have the zipper on the boxing instead of on the bottom of the cushion (as shown in your other v-berth cushion video)? Any other advantage to either? My v berth cushions are irregular so won't be flipped.

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před rokem +1

      Applying a zipper to the bottom side is easier than applying it in the boxing. Here are the only reasons you may not want to apply it to the bottom side: 1. Cushion is not flippable. 2. Zipper rubs up against solid surface where cushion sits. 3. If the foam is thin the occupant may feel the zipper when using.

    Why couldn't you make the outer edges square instead of the 3/4" taper, then use fabric for the bottom panel. This would make a very small gap at part of the outer edge, but it is a small sacrifice for being able to flip the mattress.

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 6 lety

      Yes, if a cushion is flip-able that is always a good idea. In this case most of these cushions could not be flipped due to the shape of the space they fit into.

      @palmtree5544 Před 6 lety

      Any crack or gap is a place to slip into. I once saw a child twist her ankle in the V berth the cushion had a 1 inch gap. She crawled up to nap like kids love to do. When she tried to get up the rocking of the boat was just enough to bump her off balance when she was trying to get up. We all thought it broke her ankle. And remember a good captian runs a tight ship. That mean tight fits every where possible. This would also help the owner out when everything gets lost in his lose cushions. None of his fit tight. And they also move on rough waters making any trip less comfortable. Hope this helps you make a choice for your interiors. And my boats all need new interior.
