    Steely Dan is probably the most unique, original band in rock....nobody sounds like them. Superior songwriting, production (these albums still sound AMAZING over 40 years after release) and musicianship. They used the very best studio musicians - the musicianship is OFF THE CHARTS!

    • @BuffaloC305
      @BuffaloC305 Před 2 lety +1

      Agreed. I've been researching Bad Singers and am fascinated that there is a long history of - well, if not 'bad', let's say 'very limited'. Jimmy Durante, was one, but there were others decades before, although I suspect without recording abilities, those were lost. And why do they get away with bad voices? "Because the song or the lyrics are so appealing - the vocal quality just isn't that important!" Heck, I think of Ringo Starr. When he's singing ACT NATURALLY, he's perfect for THAT song. LITTLE HELP, same thing. The White Album's GOODNIGHT - oh my, what a gorgeous lullabye with bad-voiced Ringo delivering beauty every line. And here we have Donald Fagan in that same camp... his vocals FIT his songs. Just amazing.

    Great take Chod. Besides oozing groove and class, D Blues is a doctoral level class on chord extensions, outrageous structural techniques, and shared melodic voicing. But the filthy beauty of it is that it doesn't sound forced or contrived. It sounds fluid and spacious. Relaxed even. Every song on Aja is any other bands career high point. Keep digging. According to Becker and Fagan, the song is essentially about a loser in life who is fantasizing about a better life for himself. There's a WSJ interview with them from a few years back that I'll link below. But here are probably the most relevant excerpts to the meaning of the song:
    "Mr. Becker: The protagonist in “Deacon Blues” is a triple-L loser-an L-L-L Loser. It’s not so much about a guy who achieves his dream but about a broken dream of a broken man living a broken life.
    Mr. Fagen: The concept of the “expanding man” that opens the song [“This is the day of the expanding man / That shape is my shade there where I used to stand”] may have been inspired by Alfred Bester’s “The Demolished Man.” Walter and I were major sci-fi fans. The guy in the song imagines himself ascending the levels of evolution, “expanding” his mind, his spiritual possibilities and his options in life.
    Mr. Becker: His personal history didn’t look like much so we allowed him to explode and provided him with a map for some kind of future.
    Mr. Fagen: Say a guy is living at home at his parents’ house in suburbia. One day, when he’s 31, he wakes up and decides he wants to change the way he struts his stuff.
    Mr. Becker: Or he’s making a skylight for his room above the garage and when the hole is open he feels the vibes coming in and has an epiphany. Or he’s playing chess games against himself by making moves out of a book and cheating. A mystical thing takes place and he’s suddenly aware of his surroundings and life, and starts thinking about his options. The “fine line” we use in the song [“So useless to ask me why / Throw a kiss and say goodbye / I’ll make it this time / I’m ready to cross that fine line”] is the dividing line between being a loser and winner, at least according to his own code. He’s obviously tried to cross it before, without success."

    Love your comment about your daughter! My daughter and I have always had a strong connection and music is a huge part of it. I played Steely Dan and other classic artists, such as The Beatles, Chicago, Kansas and Heart on headphones on her mother’s stomach when she was pregnant, but in all actuality, it’s in the DNA. Music is our universal language and holds the keys to real peace and togetherness. It’s not just an old hippie ideal; it’s the truth! I really love this video!! My two favorite bands each released songs pertaining to me... TOTO "Pamela" which is my name, and Steely Dan "Deacon Blues" which mentions my school! Roll Tide! Life's been good to me so far... 😁

    A prodigious musical unit of top tier studio junkies, all in a dizzying rotation, in search of the almost unachievable "perfect take" by the two co-founders standards is what you'll get off of any Stelly Dan track. Audiophiles use their music to test any high-quality headphone or speakers in the market. Those in the know, know what to expect from any of Donald Fagens intricate and quirky compositions and his deceased sidekick in musical mischief, Walter Becker.

    Just love your passion for the love of music. Another fantastic band, and one of their best for sure, but kinda hard to go wrong with Donald and his band.

    Steely Dan’s Aja might possibly feature the greatest collection of American drummers…Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie and Rick Marotta, to name a select few.

    Fagen and Becker were consummate perfectionists who would never put anything out that was "half-assed." They always chose the best musicians that fit their vision for the song. They specifically chose Pete Christlieb to play for this song because they felt that he was the best fit for it.

    Music IS food for the soul. Like great literature, a great song leads to different interpretation by different people. I loved watching you listen to a song that has been part of my life for decades. I can tell you were into it - the way you smile, sway, and almost intuitively move your hands in the drummer’s rhythm. Thanks, man. (I agree with some others here - If you haven’t done Kid Charlemagne yet, hit that one up.)

    I think it takes someone with a music background to truly appreciate Steely Dan music. To many, they are that elevator department store calming but good music played over some lousy speakers. People who really know and appreciate music are their biggest fans. Sure, there are exceptions but this is what I have learned about most SD fans. Chod, being a drummer, you MUST do the title track of the Aja album. Steve Gadd.
