The dugout is flooded, the water is still coming! Pumping out the water! Overnight in a log cabin

  • Hello everyone, friends! We finally managed to get to the dugout and find out what was going on there. To be honest, we were not ready for this, so we had to go to a log cabin for the night.
    The plan was clear right away, you need to pump out the water. At the same time, it was necessary to clean up the territory in the hut and see if the mice were running the place.

    I think that you guys should wash the cabin on the inside with water and bleach, the moment everything is dry, and also underneath the floor boards.
    To prevent mold.
    My husband sadly passed away last month due to a long condition he had gotten after his longs were affected by black mold..
    It really is a very deadly serious problem when your house, anything you live in and sleep in, gets this mold and gets in the longs.
    I never knew this before and within 7 years my partner is no longer with me.
    Please, do not underestimate this fungus, you guys are still young but the longer you live in spaces where this stuff is, the bigger the chance that your longs can get perceptive to this long disease. And sadly there is no cure and is coughing a lot, so extremely, and slowly suffocating the beginning of the end... 😔
    I just wanted to warn you guys, not scaring you but this is reality and I am proud of you all for doing this dug-out lifestyle! I am following you for a few years now and hope to see you for a very long time to come 🙂

    This very same thing happened to Alex Wild shelter. He was able recover and remove the water from shelter. But even so black mold will be a problem no mater what he does to disinfect. It will set up growth on the opposing surfaces he cant reach to clean and disinfect and will constantly keep appearing inside on surfaces once cleaned. It will release dangerous spores and make those exposed sick. He wrapped his shelter and it was still swamped with water. It will be flooded every season and it will be letting in rain water year round every time it rains even if it isnt seen. Preventing water entry is the key. However one decides to try preventing it. I think that is why many are looking for a better alternative build method for dugouts. I wish you guys the best with the recovery of your dugout. Both you and Alex put so much effort into them for them to be flooded.

      Don’t make a big Problem for some water. It’s not an overflow oft townshit, its just water and earth. If it’s dry, the problem is gone after heating for some days.

    Suggestion to solve flooding woes. Take up the floor board once the place is dry. I think the lowest point should be the entryway. Dig small trenches that go deeper as they get to the entryway, Then, dig a hole in the entryway for the water to collect. Then, dig a trench to lay a pipe in from the bottom of the hole and make that pipe trench head down hill and get deeper until it is where you can let the water flow freely. Put some rocks in the trenches and replace the floor. Put larger rocks in the hole and build an entryway floor so no one steps onto the rocks. This allows a natural flow away from the dugout so you should never have to pump it out again.

  • @nordwestbeiwest1899
    @nordwestbeiwest1899 Před 28 dny +35

    Perhaps you should think about laying drainage beneath the floor and continuing to drain at a slightly lower level. That means digging again and laying a drainage pipe!This will happen again in the future and is therefore a measure that makes sense.

    • @Sharon-bo2se
      @Sharon-bo2se Před 28 dny +3

      Maybe add in a sump and pump. That's what we use when the water table is high.

    • @user-js4zx1lr2u
      @user-js4zx1lr2u Před 28 dny +4

      Not a bad idea. Doesnt have to be a large pipe, 75mm would do it I think. Given the slope from the door, they might have to dig a trench about 50-75 meters, getting shallower as it goes.

    • @Sharon-bo2se
      @Sharon-bo2se Před 27 dny +6

      @user-js4zx1lr2u sounds about right. They had no problems when building or even when the snow was starting to melt. Watching the water flow into the hole under the floor boards by the stove reminded me. Have dug sumps and surface wells by hand in the past so should be doable and seasonal. Curious to see what they come up with. Alex Wild's big dugout also flooded in the big melt but the terrain was different. At least the wood stoves dry things out pretty well but have to watch for mold.
      Maybe a perimeter french drain around the dugout as long as it has proper gravel rather than dirt covering it. Would be a more passive drain and they could pump the sump out when it is at the critical time of high water table. Maybe even put up a sensor in the sump that they can monitor as needed. Always enjoy seeing what solutions people come up with.

      @@Sharon-bo2se : It's a French term/word, but the Egyptians and Romans already did that with drainage to keep their feet dry. See the history of Great Britain where Romans often had to drain their settlements because it was so wet.

    Call a company that deals with household flooding/mold issues. They can recommend Remediation and Cleanup plans. Wood is so permeable that getting mold started that is not treated properly is difficult to impossible to live in. An outdoor drainage contractor company, even internet can give you some construction ideas to fix the water issue permanently so you're not overwhelmed by this every Spring and Fall. Best of luck. You have put so much work in it would be a shame to see it all go to waste.

    Like many dug outs that have flooded this winter precautions should have been put in place from the beginning, you built a swimming pool, my advice if you must have a dugout it to dismantle what you have as almost all you need has already been harvested and to start again . I read a comment on here about the rising water table. Rubbish, it has nothing to do with the water table, I watched this build from the very beginning and even then I could see that this dugout was going to flood like so many others have done this past winter and continue to do so . Great build and enthusiasm but not quite right .
