1060 5GB version, in China we call it 1065, it has 1280 cuda cores same with 1060+6GB (1066), but only 160 bit memory. It is designed for net cafe’ usage. Because it can handle high setting PUBG while the performance of mining decreases dramatically due to less bandwidth of memory. Theoratically it can be only bought through particular channel directly to Nvidia, not for private gamers, but it is China, so...There are lots of 1065s out in the market. Same price with 1060 3GB 192bit(1152cores which we call it 1063), but can deliver better performance. 1066s are more expensive due to bitcoin and other mining usage.

5GB wasn't an accident. It was a deeply researched number to minimize ram while also minimizing slowdowns from caching in modern games. They were really trying to focus in on bang for the buck and lead to a really weird amount of ram :P
in fact, the bus width matches for qgb missing
5/6ths of 192 is 160, as if the configuration is the same but chopped down.
@@Tyler_Nelson I believe this is accurate, due to the way NVidia assigned ram, at least back then. A bank of memory was dedicated to a specific 32-bit section of the total bus. That seems like an inefficient use of bandwidth, but perhaps they striped the memory allocation across all the chips so the full bus is being utilized all the time?

@4:02 The tape on the SLI connectors is called Kapton tape.
It is used in electronics manufacturing for various reasons due to its ability to withstand high temperatures.
I honestly don't know why they put it on there to begin with, but I assume someone accidently left it on there.
Usually Kapton tape is used for one of these reasons:
1. Preventing solder pads from corroding from heat (the pads in the video are gold-plated tho, so this is unnecessary here).
2. Preventing liquid solder to stick to the pad (which is not the case here since wave soldering is way too coarse for a GPU).
3. Something else which probably only made sense during manufacturing.
Kapton is put on to prevent gold fingers from being damaged during manufacturing, either due to scratching or accidental solder landing on it from wave/selective/SMT processes.
Oh wow, that makes sense.
Thanks for the response!

you are right.

Man imagine graphics cards being in stock.
Yeah the thing is we have to imagine
To me, the main concern about buying somewhat expensive stuff from AliExpress, is it being seized by customs. I don't know in other countries, here in Spain it may happen
And in Greece too.
Main concern here in the UK too, have to pay ridiculous fees for things shipped from China if customs check it.
They rarely do check though and 90% of the time you're getting things for bargain prices. I got a legit rog strix 1080ti 6gb card for £350 when it retails for around £700 here.
Completely justified due to chinese business tactics
I have been buying inexpensive stuff from AliExpress and dealextreme for years, and never happened to me, but I am talking about items up to 15€, generally much less, I wouldn't even bother trying to recover them from customs given the case. A different story is a graphics card, smartphone or similar, then you are screwed.
Hal likely in your country you don't have to pay customs for products under certain price. In my country the limit is 22 euro. Beyond that amount I'd expect stuff to always get stuck in customs when coming from China
I wish you'd have dismantled the cards to check out the dies, and i really really wish there had been some data on temps, as well as some testing done on that. Seems like that is really where these cards would differ.
Christian maybe you should watch gamersnexus, they do that sort of in-depth stuff. Linustechtips is more about entertainment with some parts information.
I do watch Gamers Nexus, and i enjoy their content very much. But they haven't done a video like this. LTT has. And so, they really should have done a better job relaying relevant information. This particular info might make up the difference between a purchase, and looking elsewhere, for someone.
Besides, if someone buys the card based on the info given in this video, and then it turns out that it gets hot as hell, guess where they're gonna come to complain? Seems to me those 5 minutes of additional testing, and 30 seconds of showing the info, might be a good investment, rather than risking a large backlash after the fact. :)
Christian if the card doesnt throttle under benchmark, its not going to throttle under games.even if its running at 80-90 thats still within what the chip is designed for, if it does go above 90 it will throttle, so what is there to worry about
You know that temps differ around the world right? So if it's running right up against TJ max (point at which the card will begin to throttle) at LTT headquarters, then there is a very good chance that it'll throttle for someone who is in a slightly warmer environment.
Again, i really wish that thermal delta figures had been shown in this video.
It's generally accepted that you shouldn't run high-performance hardware in temps above about 80 F / 27 C. Or that, if you do, you can expect longevity and performance to suffer as a result. Most computers are designed to run in nice, cool places. The "known good" Founder's Edition cards will already be running just under their maximum thermal tolerance limits when you stress-test them in an air conditioned office. Higher ambient temperature will cause problems with _any_ power hungry graphics card, not just potentially sketchy ones.

Towards the end of the video. What do you mean by "not a complete scam"? It's not even a "partial" scam. Linus got exactly what was advertised, functional, not DOA, performs on-par to expectation / similar products. Linus was just unfamiliar with / lacking exposure to the global market / variants.
On the plus side, I'm glad Linus has been doing more reviews on foreign products, such as the video with the Korean domestic LG laptop.
PCUser1024 it's partially a bad idea because of the shitty build quality.
He probably means buying GPUs on AliExpress in general and that's supposed to mean that it's confirmed to not be a scam on a very small sample size (2), but he still doesn't feel confident about this idea.
You dont know how much time it will last
In any case it's not a scam. He got exactly what was advertised and paid for. Longevity, warranty etc are paid extra, like EU has always 2 years warranty, but we buy with a premium.
He got got exactly what was advertised, naturally it's cheaper build quality at the lower price point.
Yet this result was the best outcome for his test and he still claims it's a partial scam. *smh*
Should have drop tested it instead Linus, for that seems more like your field of expertise.

Maybe I'll make a video on it
thats what i was going to say, they do make a 5gb version but only aimed at gaming cafes on china and asia
Tech Dunk --- perhaps they are illegally made --- If so, Nvidia has already sued them for trademark or copyright infringement.
Linus never fails to integrate the sponsorship into his videos
Use a dremel on the solid cooling fin design and cut some actual fins and let the heat sink breath so the fans are more effective.
My first thought when he said 5GB was "Ah, a China-Only model." There are, in fact, a lot of manufacturers who will basically sell to 2 whole different markets with different prices, standards, etc, and China is among the leaders there when it comes to computers and technology. I've seen 5GB and 7GB video cards more than once that people assumed were fake, but turned out in the end to just be models not meant to be shipped or sold outside of mainland China. Makes it really easy to identify them in customer support cases (as in you get none, even if it's using real parts). Basically, from what the test results showed, these are the rejects, or "B bin" cards from manufacturers, being slightly modified for resale in certain markets where they will never be held liable for anything that happens after they sell those parts to an OEM.
In those cases that I've seen, like here, they bought them off AliExpress. Linus paid $725 for a video card that likely cost the reseller less than $300 (around 2000 Yuan is likely from what I've found, but only found locally, not online, as they're not legal to export usually) at a local shop to buy AND ship, and ended up with something you were never intended to be aware of, let alone receive, as we are not part of that target market. The thing they usually find is exactly in line with what Linus found - cheap, low quality cooling systems and power management. You can bet that if Linus ran an actual stress test or 24hr burntest on either of those cards, he'd have much different results as the capacitors started to overheat and die or the GPU itself start to deball from the board due to extreme overheating, much like the original Xbox 360.
Actually, Linus, you might want to get back in touch with Stranger Parts and see if he can find one or both of those same exact boxes at a local shop over there in Shenzhen, and get a more precise idea what the markup might actually be on those specific ones. I'm sure there are others like me who are curious.
Gtx 1060 5Gb card is made officially by Nividia, the purpose of this card is to provide a budget graphics card for the Internet cafe, the ability of Bitcoin mining is cut on this card so the price will be stable. The overall gaming ability of the 5Gb 1060 is very similar to the 6Gb 1060. When this card was first launched, it was not allowed to be sold to normal customers, but people in China always get some special sources that can get this card from. So the 1060 5Gb became the best! budget card in the market due to its gaming ability and lower price. However, the 1065 u get doesn’t have a formal package and doesn’t have nividia warranty. The most popular gtx 1065 on the market is from Gigabyte and Colorful. If u are in China, gtx 1060 5Gb is still my first recommendation.

It is defined as planck's constant divided by the momentum of the particle. I don't know what any of this has to do with graphics cards, but regardless...

As far as I know, there are graphics cards on eBay (and probably also on AliExpress), where the boxes are just labelled "GRAPHICS CARD", and they are older and lower end graphics cards that have had their firmware modified to trick the system into thinking they are newer cards. YT user "PhilsComputerLab" has done a few videos on that.
It's very easy, I tricked my friend by doing this exact thing. All you need is a vBIOS editing software and simply change the product ID to whatever you like. I changed my GTX 780 Lightning to a 980 Ti Lightning, which only 10 in the world were made and they look pretty similar when installed. I fooled him good.
edit: I DID NOT SELL IT TO HIM. I just told him I got one and showed it to him in my PC with GPU-Z open. I'm not the scum of the earth guys.

Careful: Aliexpress (in contrast to eBay) does not include import tax from far eastern countries. Prepare to pick up & pay for your stuff at customs. Better look for grey import deals on eBay that were shipped by the dealer to a "nearby" location beforehand and then sent to you without the need to pay for customs!
They often straight up lie on the label about what's in the box so you won't have to pay taxes. Where I live, we need to pay taxes over imported goods from China that are more expensive than €22. When you order something, they will just put on the box that it costs less than that (and that it's dangerous to mail the package after it's been opened).
Worked multiple times for me :)
DSP Most the time you won't get hit by Customs, if you do it won't be for much money, usually phones are marked as a $5 MP3 Player or 'Gift'
I purchased a phone and it said mp3 player...
Well, not all sellers on Aliexpress know about this trick and some dont seem to care.
In my case: I bought 2 LED lights which were not on the european market yet via the official manufacturers account on Ali from China. They did not attach ANY information to the box and I had to pay my 19% taxes at the German customs where the item was held. They forced me to give them the original payment details + the original invoice so I wouldnt lie about the price.
If I want to buy cheap electronics, I will never rely on Ali anymore - I'll buy through eBay sellers which sell stuff from other EU countries which were "secretly" imported from China.

That how I get all my products from the US. Import them and lie about the price!

The answer is simple lol, the original does not actually cost that much to produce but is sold for way more than it's worth.
R&D my friend, it costs a FUCK TON of money to develop the shit Nvidia develops, it's not all about manufacturing dummy.
John Douglas yeah well then geforce 2 should cost hundreds still
you really don't understand business and logistics do you? they factor the cost of R&D and profit in the price frame for the general expected retail run of a product, which is roughly two years ATM, then a new model comes out because they can do new R&D based on their profit run and we have the next generation.
it's not friken rocket science. ignorance must be pure bliss to some.
if you compare products with inflation and what not in mind, the price of graphics cards hasn't changed bugger all since the first 3d cards came out.
Not to mention other expenses; machinery, dividends, inventory, supplies, uncollectible receivables, logistics (under inventory), staff salaries.
It's not hard to ascertain that some of these people are still flipping burgers in their mid 20s to late 40s, and still wonder why.
it is normal they always do this in the industry first make the cost back off their R&D before they start selling a new product and then make the pattern for that product cheaper and more available for other companies. That goes for nearly all industry their is be it vehicle, pharmaceutical or hardware component.
That orange tape is Capton tape. It's there to protect the card edge connector from solder, but that's usually used for protecting mounting hole pads from wave soldering. Probably the board is getting way too much solder paste in assembly, and the only way they can make sure no extra liquid solder flows on the connector is to protect it with Capton tape?
If i recognize correctly, de Brogli is a term in the quantum physics

Once upon a time there was a premium brand for graphic cards. The name was ELSA. Now it's a no name brand from China. As time goes by...
no name brand
*NANI!*
When was that time?
Tappajaav Up to about 2000 or so. The Gladiac was very famous. ELSA was something like PNY now. And in Japan it's still a well known brand.
The Wheel of Time turns and ages come and pass leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one such Age, called the 90s by some, an age long past, an age yet to come, a wind rose in the heatsinks of ELSA. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time, but it was _a_ beginning.
china number one!!!!
It's a scam, Like Tunnelbear the easy VPN service.
Bubba Keith 😂😂😂
Bubba Keith Tunnelbear is a scam ?
They were bought out and they sell data now
I got mine, did it about a month ago. Not a scam, maybe you just don't know how to use a computer.
Sam barber Don't use tunnel bear they got bought by Mc Afee and now they sell your search history and other data to third party.
Aliexpress is usually not too bad with returns/faulty purchases. But as always, if it seems too good to be true it probably is.
key word "probably" I made a whole pc using Alienxpress and it still works to this day.
@@commentgod2175 That's why I used the word "probably" because there are deals to be had. Typically if it's cheap, it's cheap for a reason.
@@commentgod2175 do you remember the seller who you bought a gpu from? I’m thinking about buying pc parts on there but I’m worried if I get scammed. I would help out a lot.
i get up in the morning and go to work for 8 to 10hrs a day. the first thing i do when i get home is make food. turn on my pc and watch your videos. awesome work. what you do is a dream of mine
Spend a lot of time analyzing the heatsink, but I see no temp readings or overclocks. :(
GTX 1060 5GB is actually real Nvidia card, but it's only for asian market and it's supposed to be used in Chinese internet cafes. You can Google it quite easily. It was announced at the end of the year 2017.
EDIT: OK, it's being said in the video. I just commented too early :)
The big guys facial expressions are awesome!

I had a girlfriend many years ago whose best friend's name was Debroglie
killaken2000
Was just about to comment this. I've studied Debroglies laws.
colorless, wow man you must at least be doing highschool physics.
What's a girlfriend?
I had a girlfriend many years ago too 😔
hmm , very interesting, tell me more
DeBroglie was a physicist. He did work on the idea that a particle can act like a wave.
I got a colorful GTX 1660 off AliExpress and the cooler seemed mostly plastic but it had 3 fans and overclocked well without going over 65 degrees
2:57 "There's nothing really ELSA about it."
You shouldn't have put the a in "about"
@@ahmz1k lol u just stole a joke from somebody who made that joke 3 months ago
@@PottyShidder are you high? Where exactly did i steal a joke from someone and when tf was it 3 months ago. are you suffering from delusion?
Linus, Were temps on these measured considering the older shroud and cheaply constructed alu heatsink/fans?
Thanks
You guys should do a follow-up episode in 3-6 months to see if these cards are still preforming well, because this legit seems too good to be true.
Yeah would be cool if they ran a bit of torture testing on them and followed up.
it's only a 15% discount for a cheaply made card, especially if you don't pay import tax, it seems legit.
I mean he could just test the thermals right now since he's got the card. These seem like legit licensed boards from nvidia, the main factor seems like they've putting in a cheaper cooling solution.
That 5GB GTX1060 model has been sold in China for several months. I've never heard of any large-scale quality problems. They are designed for (even some low-end) net cafes, and they are expected to work under some really harsh environment.
What do you mean too good to be true? They bought the GTX 1080 from Aliexpress for $720. There's been several GTX 1080 on sale on /r/buildapcsales for $500-580. The price they paid is stupid bad.
That spit take was amazing
Hey, kinda new to the "custom pc" biz, and I get what benchmarking does, but not sure what programs to use. Is the one shown a "one size fits all", and If so, what is it?
Aw, was hoping to find Aliexpress links haha

Ya me too😂😂
ehhhh the prices are not even cheap enough to warrant the fact that you #1 will have to wait god knows how long for it to arrived, #2 it might not ever arrive, #3 has no warranty, #4 could blow up at any moment.
checkout the sales history, someone from Canada bought it lol
Theoretically, if the PCB on the Aliexpress 1080 is the same, you could rip the cooling off and liquid cool it, making it a more affordable and equally as good solution for those who are looking for a 1080 that they will be liquid cooling. Interesting...
I'm telling ya these are pcbs from namebrand manufacturing plants that were considered subpar and sold off to a "recycling" company to be assembled and sold. This is quite possibly a legit 1080.
no warranty though, idk if liquid cooling voids waranty?(in that case it would make sense)
It does, Thomas. And that was exactly my thought, you are going to void warranty anyways, so just get a cheap one like this and save some bucks.
Release of 5gb version was in basically every tech newspaper sometime ago, no idea how he or many in this comment section didnt know about it
ur today's sponsor, the be quiet fan, i have the same cooler but with a bigger heatsink and 2 fans, it works soooooo well

There is a 1060 5 gigabyte in China, it's mostly for gaming cafes
aidan c. Yes I was just bout' to say that
That's what he says in the video if you watch it
He says that in the video
yes he said that in the video
What a pair of absolute morons. You should try to comment only after finishing the video.
There are 1060 with 5gb of memory. They were launched primarily to solve the graphic shortages due to mining. They were sold exclusively to some net bars and should not be sold on the market. However in the end, some manufacturers like this one in the video called “Ming Xuan” was bold enough to sell 5gb 1060to average consumers.
He already said that you momo
Well China has never respected another country's intellectual property rights before, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they haven't done so now.
Their entire economy is based on theft.
GTX1065 is not relevant to the theft. ALL Online retailers are prohibit to sell 1065.
HOW
Stereotype ~~
EZREAL MENG *stereotypical, lol. at least Chinese people made a good gaming card. But they really need to up the security and ban the GTX-1065 if you say that it's illegal to sell the 5GB card.
Bruh, when I clicked on your video, I got an ad of you advertising Pulseware.

Elsa was founded way back in 1980 as a German company until it went bankrupt in 2002, restructured and then finally completely died in 2004. It lives on as a joint venture in Japan in 1997 and they still sell Geforce/Quadro/Tesla cards in Japan. It's daughter company was founded in Taiwan in 2003 and was a prominent player in the 8800GT/9800GT era but pulled out of the GPU market in 2007 after an unsuccessful venture with China Onda, ELSA Taiwan apparently makes LED lighting now.
Maxsun is a pretty big China brand that started in 2003, they make both AMD and Nvidia cards along with motherboards and SSDs. They list the 5GB card on their China website, but not the global one. I personally have the 6G Terminator (bought via GB), the cooler is quite awful mine idles @ 46C, fans @49%, GPU clock @ 1506mhz with max boost of only 18XXmhz with a 32C ambient, It does not support fanstop.
Man I'm surprised no one else seems to recognize that name; they made a ton of the early GeForce/Quadro's. Still have a couple of them, still great old cards. Kind of excited to see that name again not gonna lie
I had an ELSA in the mid to late 90s - they were kinda popular here in europe.
Our Elsa Gladiac Geforce 2 Ultra was the shiz back in the day haha!
ELSA stood for "ELektrische Systeme Aachen", started out with modems and later graphics cards, ELSA was one of the top players for CAD graphics cards around 2000, 1997 the ELSA GmbH (limited) became the ELSA AG (Inc.) it grew fast from 200 workers in Germany to 700 world wide in a few years, but the management still run it like a small company, they branched out some time before 2000, sales office in Santa Clara, CA, US, one in Japan (I believe Tokio), an office in Taipei, Taiwan to be closer to the mainboard manufacturers, an office in France and UK (don't remember if there were more), the first cards hat S3s Winner graphics chips, later for CAD graphics 3DLaps chips and around 2000 nVidia TNT and later GeForce chips, till about then ELSA developed its own PCBs and hat them build e.g. in France (ELSA never had own production facilities), they also developed their own drivers especially for CAD card like the ELSA GLoria series, the drivers would be tested in house and at the CAD software manufactures and hat special setting for more then 30 different CAD programms, it also had settings for adjusting the resolution and frequencies to work with older monitors, also around 2000 an ELSA developer came up with Stereo through shutter glases that would be attached to VGA, the glasses were called "Revelator", sadly that developer left ELSA two weeks after presenting it to the support team, when the glasses came out month after the announced date and weay to few for the market they had some issues which never got addressed since the originally dev was no longer with ELSA, at the time nVidia was small and just up and comming but growing fast, it was interested in ELSAs drivers and tools and offered a partner ship, ELSA declined, year later ELSA asked nVidia for a partner ship, this time nVidia declined, they had grown past ELSA, through missmanagement ELSAs stock prices was plumetting and the company had way to much dept, to make some money ELSA sold its whole graphics dev team to nVidia and PNY for 15 million DM (or was it already Euro, not sure), as part of the deal ELSA would get the chips two weeks before any one else for a few years, but there were always delays and most of the time the cards were out later then anyone else - ELSA was a big well respected company and its legacy lives on in the nVidia tools and nVidias 3D-Stereo with were originally developed by ELSA, but ELSA mostly destroyed itself by missmanagement (some say deliberatly...) it might actually be worth researching that all a bit more and making a video about it - after all ELSA had quite an influence on early nVidia especially for tools and in the dev of the Quadro chips
my gf worked for their tech support till the end
I think, if you take care of cooling, cleaning and power supply, these VGA cards can be durable, because in my view it's the only "problem" they can bring, the specifications and benchmarks are the same as the "originals".
Funny, i do not hear linus say these cards are overheating. So it sounds a little premature you need to replace the cooling.
"I don't know what debroglie is but it doesn't sound very good" lol
Thanks brother for INFORMATION....love u.
Linus you need to do a full memory test, a lot of Chinese companies are screwing with the bios on these scam cards to SHOW the memory that's not their, games report a memory quantity that really doesn't exist so can cause crashing or huge slowdown once the memory is filled
*not there
Really no need to since the benchmarks were so close to the genuine card baselines. It would have been obvious there that the memory was tweaked.
AwesomeVindicator they indeed run tests in games and also a synthetic performance test at 4:37
AwesomeVindicator ii
In China u can buy a 5gb gtx 1060 edition edit: i mean a real 5gb edition with real 5 gigs
There's actually a 5GB 1060 built for gaming cafes in china or somewhere in case Linus didn't know. 😂I actually heard that way back a long time ago in a video. This comment was made 3 mins into the video . He did find out finally .
Good save bro.
Thank you for saving me from watching the whole video where he clearly mentions this fact
That's true.they already available on taobao, the cheapest 1060 right now
