  • This active speaker did not power up. The problem turned out to be similar to the one we have seen before in the Mackie Thump TH-12A repair video: broken off pins from power diodes in TO-220 packages that are mounted on the back panel (heat sink).

    Great repair. It seems a lot of manufacturers expect their customers not to drop their equipment. ;) I've noticed that some bend small U bends into leads so they have a little give in a situation like that. Your wire method should allow it to survive some huge board movements.

    Hello.... I opened up the board on my SRM 450 which stopped working. I did not find the same problem as shown here. What happened was .... the speaker was driven very high and heard a 'Popping' sound and then a strong burning smell. Any ideas what I should look for ? CHEERS Mate !

    One point: the 'thump' is the proximal cause of the diode leads. The high level of vibrations caused the diode leads to constantly flex until metal fatigue made them shear off. Wouldn't this situation be best served by placing some hard foam pads between the board and the heat sink to absorb those excessive vibrations? True, you did add wires to those leads; but they too are still subject to these same excessive vibrations! Good preventive measure.

    The drawback of the way all the leads on the discrete mosfets & diodes...are bent..badly....with sharp right angles....they should be of rounded bends.. which I always do..
    after the new with rounded bends..they never came back for same failure..
    even THOSE short extension leads are a big NO- NO for me..
    @ 350kHz pwm current..

    • @feedback-loop
      @feedback-loop  Před 4 lety

      What is the problem with short extensions in your view?

    • @analoghardwaretops3976
      @analoghardwaretops3976 Před 4 lety

      @@feedback-loop more spikes & ringing because of added lead inductance... here full length leads plus length of flex. wire...plus 3 extra solder joints..shortest possible leads ARE ALWAYS best..
      the ferrite on drain lead and device rating does help though..

    Your methods of repair are almost poetic.
    On the other hand Mackie has lost some of its prestige IMHO.
    Such construction flaws simply shouldn't happen.
    Usually these Mackies come in pairs.
    I suggest you tell your customer to have the other unit repaired as well.
