  • Benoni, town, Gauteng province, South Africa, east of Johannesburg. It is situated at 5,419 feet (1,652 m) above sea level and covers two sides of a valley that borders four lakes.
    Benoni was established as a mining camp after the local discovery of gold in 1887. The local mining chairman, Sir George Farrar, landscaped the valley in the early 1900s, and Benoni was officially declared a town in 1907. It is now part of the industrial complex of the Witwatersrand and is particularly noted for its iron and steel works and brass foundry. O.R. Tambo International Airport is immediately northwest. Pop. (2001) 94,341.
    Ermelo is an agricultural and mining, as well as commercial and education town in the Gert Sibande District Municipality of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa.
    Situated 210 km east of Johannesburg, covering an area of 47.6 square km is home to an approximately 100 000 inhabitants.

    Worked in Benoni in 1975 for a short while. Was a bustling place, today all shopfronts are shuttered, place looks run down like Johannesburg. Afrika addio.....

    The East Rand has seen better days but Benoni is quite nice.

    lived there in the 80's and went back for the first time after 30 something years in November 2022 and I can confirm that its become a sh*&le.
    How is it possible that functioning yet ill country (due to apartheid) disintegrated in such a way? One would expect that as soon as you extracted apartheid out of the equation there would be enough for everyone. Seems not. Just sheer destruction of a lovely country.
    Downtown Benoni nowadays looks like a warzone.
