  • DIY Bri shows you how to fix a common problem on 1999-2002 GMC & Chevy Trucks where the odometer/gear shift all in one PRNDL display will randomly go out or completely stop working. Bri gives you complete detailed instructions on repairing the solder connections to fix this problem.

You ROCK!! Just did this a couple hours ago after they were out for maybe 10 years. Redid around ten or so joints and three were definitely cold. Up until now I was pressuring the odometer reset button with the bottom of a bic lighter to light it up. Excellent tutorial. Thank you!!

Thanks for taking the time to make the video! Our 2002 suburban had the problem of the display working intermittently. we would tap on it and it would work sometimes but eventually stopped altogether. I had figured that it was a loose connection but figured it would be hard to get to or repair. No problem with your video. Every thing works as it should and the whole project was only about 30 minutes.

Finally fixed the PRND in my suburban. Followed this guys procedure and it worked perfectly. Only difference on mine was the bad soldering joints this guy shows were fine on my truck. I did find some bad solder joints near the top of the display (on the back). Once re-soldered it works perfectly. Thank you.

Gonna be doing this soon. I just bought a 1500 with 300kish miles for $1400. It has this exact problem. And before anybody passes judgement for my buying decision, this truck has been serviced regularly and has about 200 pages of service records dating all the way back. And this is the only known issue it has for that amount of miles. Runs and drives nearly perfect. Not one leak in the exhaust. And immaculate interior. Under the hood was slightly dusty. But still clean. Even the frame has no rust holes. Floorplans are solid. Body and bed mounts are still strong. Very well maintained. Tires have maybe 10k miles on them. Typical rocker and rear wheel well rust. Still looks and drives better than most with less than half the miles this one has.

Ok, So to start I already pulled my gauge cluster to replace the lights with blue Leds. (you may want to do this if you are going to remove the dash cluster anyway they look so much better than the oem). Anyway, I was able to remove the dash cluster again and follow the instructions provided in the video easily. A couple things to note. He is right on dead balls accurate (thanks Marissa). You need to be careful when you remove the circuit board from the the cluster, IT IS PLASTIC so take it easy. It will slide off easily if you gently pry it off. The circuit board on the RND cluster is easily visible. When you pry off the circuit backing back you will be able to see the separate RND box circuit board. Unplug the little cable that is hanging you up (again be gentle if you break it you are screwed). After you pry up the RND board you will see the missing solder on the board with a nice prong sticking through. One small drop of rosin core solder on that hole/prong will work. You can check like I did by plugging in the cluster (CAREFULLY) to see if it works properly before re-assembling. Check all those solder connections but the bad one was clearly visible. . That being said don't get crazy/ The problem area was clearly visible on the board. If you start re-soldering all those contacts even if they don't need it you may easily overheat or fry the board, Fix the missing contact point and get out of there. lol
My mech who is a good guy quoted me $500 to r&r this gauge panel and make it work. This is a GREAT video and at this particular time it is a blessing to have this fella's help.

    i have a question, maybe 2.
Seems how you know your stuff when it comes to the control of these clusters.
in my case 2007 Trailblazer LT 4.2L
Q1. is there a way to turn off (disable) the DIC. 100%
Q2. In lieu of turning off the all DIC 100%, is there certain communication wires (color sensitive) that are ok to remove/cut from behind the pin connection that reads (service tire monitor) and (service stabilitrak)
I watched another video where a man added communication on his older base trailblazer cluster, with a communication wire that was already present, and simply grounded that wire, and he gained a feature on the DIC for fuel averaging.
With this I realized, that maybe, just maybe there is a separate communication wire from the bus, to the cluster for each logic feature. OR do all the DIC communication come into the pin behind the dash with just 1 wire?
I can put tape on the warning lights for these two issues, but the at the message center (DIC)
I would prefer to just remove that logic as described above and still keep my Odometer reads and other programmable features.
Hope to hear back soon,, Thanks Please let me know

Very well done, Bri! What is the normal diag for the Information Center (Escalade) in the cluster not working or even lighting up? I was told by a cluster repair guy on eBay that they would just replace the screen but I'm wondering if its going to be a similar solder issue as the odometer? The guy is selling this service for $50 for just the odometer. Thanks~

Thank you for this video. MY PRNDL and Odometer do not work. My solder points look excellent and i do not see any other broken solder anywhere. I know it is not a fuse issue because all other lights on the cluster work. Any idea what the issue could be?

Most likely a problem with the circuit board some place... However not sure exactly.

I have a 2007 equinox, the gauge cluster had the PRNDIL lights work fine even when shifting. Replaced the gauge cluster cause of 2 bad stepper motors, and now when I shift to D it goes from N to I. What could be my issue?

So if your solder joints are still good and no fuses out you just need to replace the instrument cluster?

does anyone know which resistor goes to which part of the circuit board, for example the first one might go to the speedometer second to the tach, third to the temp gauge?

My prndl doesnt work i took out the instrument cluster n wiggled the connector n it will go on. Then i would put it back together n it would turn off again. Does that mean i need a new connector?

Would this method work on a 2003 GMC Sierra?, my display is blank.

I have a 99 GMC Sierra that the odometer and PRND321 flickers off and on in half sections. I assume this video is the fix for that but the gauges, tach, speedometer will go off and the battery light comes on. Then I hit a bump and it all comes back on again. That started around the time I installed a backup camera to my stereo. The flickering odometer started much later. Ideas or comments?

I tried it on mine and did find one of the prongs loose. I did get it to light up, but it's only showing the PRDNL and not showing the gear that I select, also the mileage is just showing 8888888 or 000000.
