    I appreciate these reviews as you get multiple perspectives. I’m totally with Wendy’s score on this one, it has gone down well in my game group and won best game at UKGE. I found it quite light and breezy to play but sure the scoring is swingy. I can win/lose by a big margin. However, it is a 20-30 minute filler game. I know what they meant about first player but it feels important in the context of taking 2 tiles from a display, particularly if you are first in a round with lots of plazas.
    I don’t know what pricing is like in the US but I also thought it was really good value for money at £25 RRP in the UK.

    Given this for my birthday by a wonderful friend. Watched your review and was dismayed with the guys reactions and was worried about opening it because of the low reviews. Took it to my Boardgame club and it was a hit with the group. We played the game 3 times over the evening and would possibly have played more if the venue wasn't closing. After the first game we chucked in all the variants which was fun sand added a bit more complexity. Will update this after I have played a bit more.

    Actually, first player token is very important, because the 1st player each round actually takes 2 tiles, where as everyone else takes 1 tile.

      @DTChrisYi Před rokem +7

      My only point on first player is it didn't need its own rule in the rulebook since the next person clockwise who would have gone becomes first player and goes next after the market refills. It reminds me of the Carpe Diem star vs circle layout, if you're familiar with that.

    This game is such a "Kingdomino killer" for me. I like the different ways of scoring for the different terrains. I also like the stacking of tiles (I guess I should look for those other games being referred to in the review because I dont know them.) Kingdomino just became bland for me with all the same terrains with no 3D.
    If Kingdomino deserved a seal of excellence, giving a seal of excellence for this one make sense.
    Totally agree with Wendy for this one because this game deserved at least a seal of approval.

Like has been said before if Wendy for instance was the only reviewer of the game and gave it 8.5 then it would have received the award, but if Chris reviewed it then nothing. It is always opinion, but everything in this hobby more or less is. If they give it an award I am more likely to learn more about the game than not. They could all give it a 10, but to me it may be meh so the award still plays out the same relative to my perspective. But it's not like any jury ever needs to have consensus. For most it's a majority, here Tom has a different ruleset. It's up to him. It's not any different than Tom loving a game and it gets the Seal because he reviews it while everyone else not in the video hates it.

    As is often the case, it comes down to expectations. This is a speedy, welcoming game. If you could see more tiles ahead it would slow the game down. And make it more abstract. You’ve got to plan but also go with the flow. Play defense as needed. There are tough choices when you decide to build up and cover a color. A 6 is low for this game. I’m shocked they weren’t all at 7 or higher. And yes, they missed the importance of being first player.

    • @DTChrisYi
      @DTChrisYi Před rokem +6

      My point on first player not meaning anything is simply that turn order continues to move clockwise. At the end of a "round" when there's only one tile left, the next person in order becomes first player, but they would go next clockwise anyway. I do think it's a game a lot of people like much more than me, and that's okay!

He describes a hypothetical situation where he decides to play for yellow, then yellow never comes up, until it does but all at once in the same round... etc.
    This is a draft game. That's the whole idea of draft games. If you go into a draft having a strategy already, and you force it regardless of the cards/tiles that come up, you pretty much don't know how to draft. The whole idea is about playing based off what comes up. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the game yet, but the complaints in this area from Tom and Co felt pretty insignificant.

  • @Redbeard013

    I think this review highlights why the seals of excellence or approval work with how the DT does them, and always has. Sure Tom, Zee, and Chris all gave it middle of the road scores. However, for Wendy it was great. Hence the seal of excellence. That also means if you agreed with Wendy's points and analysis you probably have a higher likelihood of finding the game excellent yourself. The whole point of the seals of approval and excellence is to show that this game, whatever it is, will probably interest you if you agree with those points provided by the reviewers right? Even if multiple reviewers didn't rate it as high, one did, and that should warrant the seal of approval or excellence if applicable. I also think this particular review perfectly highlights how advantageous the new set up for reviews is as a whole at the DT. More opinions and thoughts is always good. Even if you disagree with them that should still give you more information in the end as to if a game is for you or not.

    Akropolis is a 20-30 minutes filler. There is strategy but don’t expect Power Grid level maths to win the game. There is luck obviously, like other filler games that got higher rating from Tom such as point salad and kingdomino.
    In this game you shouldn’t go just go for the yellow or blue tiles because you rely to the luck of the draw. You want to build an all around strategy so that it’s easier to adapt and not have to focus to just one color.

      It's really no different than before, it's just now that you know how other people at the DT feel about the game. In the past, if only one person reviewed a game - let's say Wendy in this case - then the game would only have an 8.5 attached to it and that's all you would ever know. So, did the seal ever really mean anything in the first place? The seal is a bit of an antiquated idea anyway. Ostensibly, the seal is more for people who aren't watching board game content on a regular basis, but that never made sense because the average Target shopper probably doesn't care if the DT gave it a seal of whatever because they don't even know what that means or who the DT is. And most people who are watching DT videos on a regular basis are checking BGG and their favorite reviewers before purchasing most games.

      Why is it disturbing to put the seal of excellence on a game where majority don't rate it that way, and only 1 does? This is how they've always done their seals. I agree their "seals" can often help push a game, or at least get it some extra hype. The whole point of giving a seal of approval or excellence out even when only 1 reviewer rates it that high is to show that the particular game in question sings for that reviewer. Therefore any of us who agree with what that reviewer said will probably find the game excellent as well. Likewise if you feel more like the other reviewers rating a game then you know even if it's excellent for some, it probably is not for you.

    Yeah Wendy might be selling this one a bit too high - maybe not played much of this genre? It's fine as the others have said, at most a 7, but yeah turn order can screw you over each and every time your tile turns up that you can't get and like Zee said, you just go for star tiles every time, no sound reason you wouldnt.

      there have been lots of games in this genre that have come out lately, this one probably works better at lower player counts, I have seen playthroughs with Jon Gets Games, that I think at 2 it might just give that freedom to be a 30 minute thinky puzzler that the family can enjoy, the time length of the game might make it palatable.

      The dice tower is many things and one of those is a reviewer. Just like many critics they voice their opinion to help inform the consumer and make the hobby overall better. I really like the expanded format of multiple reviewers on some of the games. The conversation back snd forth is very interesting and helps me understand the reason behind the score. Overall DT has nothing to apologize for and they continue to develop entertaining informative content and Tom continues to evolve and improve the format of his message.

    I know Tom has mentioned he doesn't care if he gives a game a low score and another dice tower member gives it a high score. But I feel like it really is taking away from what Dice Tower seal of Excellence means. Not sure what the solution would be though. 🤷‍♂️
    Maybe if they do reviews like this, they should average the scores to determine the seal. Average of this would be 6.6. so round to 6.5? Or even round up and it gets seal of approval

      @@thedicetower totally understand. Like I said, I don't really have a solution to the issue I raised. But, the Dice Tower Seal has always meant a lot to me. But in this case, three members of the dice tower giving this game a 6 is much more important information to me than one person's 8.5. @@rabidpickle I kind of fee you are missing something.
      In the past, and I know Tom already mentioned it at some point, - and when the DT started to be more than TM - the games would be reviewed by the person who mostly enjoyed the game. If it wasn't for this new format, probably you would have only had Wendy's perspective. So what would have been the final difference for the "seal value"?
      I think this new format is great, because it gives us viewers more voices and reference points. But people shouldn't get so stuck pn the numbers. In practice nothing has changed, and a 3 for someone can be an 8 for me (or vice-versa)

  • @josephbegin6074
    @josephbegin6074 Před rokem +9

    I honestly don't get why a single voice should dictate the overall message of a "Group" review. Seems a bit lopsided and uninformative to put a seal of excellence on a game, that people are going to see and use to potentially buy a game, when that seal is simply the result of 1 out of 4 people loving it. It'd be like rotten tomatoes dropping out the lower 3/4 of reviews leaving only the most positive.
    On the other hand, I get how before group reviews were a thing at the dice tower, the right to review was given to the person who seemed to like it the most. So the result is mostly the same. But I don't particularly love that system either since it silences negative/lukewarm opinions. Why is the positive opinion more valid than the negative one? But even with that system, at least it's not under the guise of "group" reviews, where the "group" actually doesn't have any say in the final score.
    I guess the main point is that it would very clearly not be fair if one negative review could overshadow three positive ones. So why is it ok for one positive review to overshadow three lukewarm/negative reviews?

    • @thedicetower
      @thedicetower  Před rokem +1

      @@thedicetower I did watch the review and found it both entertaining and informative. I really like the fact that more voices are being heard. The playing of Board Games after all is a multi-individual endeavor, so the fact that your review format now includes more people is certainly a MASSIVE plus in my eyes and has become very useful to me.
      I'm merely repeating the slightly overstated sentiment (To perhaps your justified annoyance), that if multiple people are going to be included in the review, each presenting scores, then those additional scores should have some sort of weight. This is mostly in relation to the Seals of Quality that the Dice Tower award games, which for me as a consumer anyways, is a metric by which I am apt to pick and choose games.
      [If the Seal could mean that only 1 out 4 (Potentially 7) reviewers really liked a game, that makes the Mark less useful to me as a consumer]
      Ultimately, it's your Show/Brand and I'm just some shmuck on the internet. This is more a gripe than a legitimately damning criticism of your content. I hope I caused no offense in my criticism and hope to continue to enjoy your show for years to come as I have for years previous.
