  • Digging massive holes on the beach is a dangerous TikTok trend, the mayor of Sanibel Island told a local Florida TV station. “If you're digging to make a sandcastle or, in the case of this image, a place to toss your shovel in, please refill the hole and kindly take your things with you. It's a hazard to other beachgoers, especially our beautiful sea turtles,” Marco Island Police said. Inside Edition Digital has more.

As a Floridian we often hear about kids or even adults dying because of holes on the beach caving in. Plus, the sand from deeper parts of the hole is almost like concrete, so it is perfect for building castles with (DISCLOSURE: the previous statement is mainly dependent on the type of sand at the beach. This statement is true for beaches with softer, fine sand, but will not work on coarse-sanded beaches.)
I used to dig these huge holes a lot, but I had much higher-quality shovels back then to make the digging easier.
Now, I just dig out smaller-diameter, slightly less-deep holes and make solid balls of sand with the wet sand from the bottom. Just as fun, and slightly less obtrusive to other beachgoers.

A young kid died in my area a few years ago because a cave he & his sibling dug out collapsed. I'm pretty sure one sibling was in a coma and the other one passed away. They were very young. I don't understand why people think that sand will stay put and can't actually kill you by suffocation. People need to be more aware that it can kill you even if you're just at the beach for funsies. Also, different note, if you're having a fire on the sand, put it out with water. Don't just bury it, thinking it'll go out. I've heard of too many feet being burned the day after because they walked over a buried bonfire.

Now turtles can't get to where they need to lay and hatchlings can't get back to the ocean. As a firefighter I can without a doubt confirm that digging holes in sand is extremely dangerous. Digging holes in dirt is extremely dangerous and kills people constantly. Sand is much more unstable. Even if you only get buried chest level in sand you can die because every breath you try to take the sand will compress your chest and you will suffocate while your head is exposed. I've seen it. Also, family members and bystanders have died trying to dig people out of holes. A rule of thumb is never be in a hole that is deeper than it is wide and never be standing in a hole deeper than your chest if it is not shored up properly. But if you still feel the need to do so, just let everyone around you know that if that collapses on you that you knew the risks and don't want anyone else to die trying to save you
