Police Warn Against TikTok Trend of Digging Big Holes on Beaches

- Digging massive holes on the beach is a dangerous TikTok trend, the mayor of Sanibel Island told a local Florida TV station. “If you're digging to make a sandcastle or, in the case of this image, a place to toss your shovel in, please refill the hole and kindly take your things with you. It's a hazard to other beachgoers, especially our beautiful sea turtles,” Marco Island Police said. Inside Edition Digital has more.
Also, didn’t a young guy (about 18 to 20 year old) die recently when the wall of the hole they were digging at the beach collapsed on him and his sister? Theirs wasn’t for TikTok though; it was just a family fun day at the beach but same danger ⚠️

Can't believe people would destroy a beach and then just abandon the scene.

Misinformation you mean 🤦♂️
This is so weird. I had no idea this was some sort of trend? Glad I wasn’t aware about this last month when I was mildly digging for seashells!
As a Floridian we often hear about kids or even adults dying because of holes on the beach caving in. It’s very hard to get someone out and because the sand is so small with each move it settles itself more. Just by you trying to breath, you pack more sand in around you. Every slight subtle move…
That’s a good horror movie plot 😣
Thank you I was waiting for them to explain the most dangerous part yet they skip it.
Ukraine is a corrupt dictatorship just like Russia.
Do they cave because the beach has been nourished and its hollow somewhere or does the sand cave in from the sides after the hole is too deep? My mind can’t picture it.
@@dezb8510 sand isn't known for structural integrity. Imagine how you make sand castle. You get some wet sand and start shaping it. When it starts drying little touch or vibration can collapse your entire castle.
Hole has contact with air, starts drying loses structural integrity and collapse when person digs or people walk around the hole.
Imagine being an "adult" but have to be told; like a child, to put things back in its place. And also to take your belongings back home with you.
I swear most "adults" on Tiktok have the mental age of a child. Actually, I take that back because it would be an insult to children.
If you put It that way it's even more frustrating

who tf would fill in a hole after digging it though. it's going to go back to normal by nature anyway.
That guy sitting at the _bottom_ of his deep, narrow whole had me freaking out. If that thing would have collapsed in, he'd have had less than 2 minutes to be dug out before he suffocated. Guys, don't do what this idiot did; it is so insanely dangerous.
Plus, there's always the chance of delving too greedily, + too deep, & awakening something down there; shadow, & flame...
He deserves worse than this. These types of people don't deserve to live on this planet. They should leave immediately.
The other day when I went to the beach.. I was wondering why there were people digging holes every meter of the sand.
I agree with its danger and I hope they realize it for themselves. Some were sitting in them; the sand could shift and fill up again, potentially suffocating the person.
Its great that its being pointed out.
Decades ago, we were always told to fill in our holes that we dug on the beaches. I thought this was common sense. As a child, it probably wasn't because it was fun to dig holes and not have to be responsible for them but parents would tell their kids to fill them back up. Now people lack the brain to fill them as adults...

This statement is true for beaches with softer, fine sand, but will not work on coarse-sanded beaches.)
I used to dig these huge holes a lot, but I had much higher-quality shovels back then to make the digging easier.
Now, I just dig out smaller-diameter, slightly less-deep holes and make solid balls of sand with the wet sand from the bottom. Just as fun, and slightly less obtrusive to other beachgoers.
Same here. My brother and I did it all the time. It might have seemed big when we were little, but I doubt they were huge. We still had fun shoveling the dirt back in. People should have known not to leave holes that big left behind.
A guy I went to elementary and middle school with died like this at 14. He and his friends were digging a huge hole and were jumping in it. Besides the turtle, some of these people digging the holes may have no knowledge on the safety of trenches. In other words if not cautious enough or careful enough when digging over 5 feet deep, the sand can easily collapse over and before you know it someone can be unfortunate to end up buried under the sand and possibly turning out fatal. Digging 5 feet or deeper is not as simple as most might think. Educate yourself first in order to do such task the proper way.

If the tide comes in suddenly, that hole can easily be turned into quicksand and suck you under. You don't even have to be in the hole, just near enough to have the wave push you in. Water follows that path of least resistance.

Yikes, that's messed up.
damn
The fact that it even needs to be explained, why not to, shows how pathetic social media has made society...
When people think oh that can't happen to me.... Yes it can, you ain't special...
its a hole
@@beavercontrol1743 yep a large hole that can easily collapse on a person and kill them. Smh.. Not to mention the wasted resources used to then get the person out.
@@rondameier8168 yeah its a hole I don't think people think of the dangers of it though
@@beavercontrol1743 last month teen died from the same hole he dug.
This generation of people…. Basically a bunch of dumb clout chasers everywhere🤮 So annoying, people destroy everything.
Agreed..
This generation has made me lose hope in humanity itself
I was born in the wrong generation
not everyone in this generation..
Every generation has their idiots. This one just has a camera to show off their stupidity to the world.
You’d think after that 18 year old died not long ago digging a big hole, people would not repeat that fatal mistake
I remember when I was little, I saw a hole in the beach I was little so I could’ve fallen in and never come out.
Even if you're gonna fill it back up, you shouldn't do this in the first place. If it's deeper to the point it's above your head, stop. That can easily collapse on you and suffocate you, there's been cases of that happening, don't dig your own grave.
And nothing of value would be lost
Actually waist deep is just as dangerous sand is quite heavy especially when wet.
Same with filling the hole, since they dug the sand become loose and have air pocket, so when they fill it, it wont be 100 % fill and people who step on it literally step in their grave.
Sand can squeeze your stomach, so that you can't breathe either, although your mouth is outside.
As a firefighter I can without a doubt confirm that digging holes in sand is extremely dangerous. Digging holes in dirt is extremely dangerous and kills people constantly. Sand is much more unstable. Even if you only get buried chest level in sand you can die because every breath you try to take the sand will compress your chest and you will suffocate while your head is exposed. I've seen it. Also, family members and bystanders have died trying to dig people out of holes. A rule of thumb is never be in a hole that is deeper than it is wide and never be standing in a hole deeper than your chest if it is not shored up properly. But if you still feel the need to do so, just let everyone around you know that if that collapses on you that you knew the risks and don't want anyone else to die trying to save you
"Thinning the herd" also means burying them.
How exactly does one die trying to dig them out?
@@MrTrevortxeartxe did you not read when he said sand is very unstable? Most likely the sand beneath them collapses, and they fall into the deep hole leaving them unconscious and eventually killing them.
Fake news
As an EMT I tip my hat to that statement. Legit more then one experience at the beach with holes
When I was a freshman in college a bunch of my group mates were digging a hole like this, one guy got in to take a picture up at everyone else around the hole, the side wall collapsed and everyone tried digging him out for 15min but he died. I remember when they finally pulled him out and they were rushing him to the ambulance while doing chest compressions... I used to dig holes like this on the beach for fun, but not anymore and never again.
That's sad. You guys learnt it the hard way
Grew up on the beach. One of the first rules my mom taught me when I was about 4 or 5 was to pick up trash and always put the beach back the way I found it. Now I find myself filling in other people's holes 🤣🤣🤣
I can’t wait for a trend to start where people treat people good and do kind things for people.
in the year 3000. keep dreaming buddy. whats next bullying homeless?
