  • How the Epson ET-18100 ecotank printer with six dye inks works with some types of art paper. Matt media support is limited, but thiner lighter papers do well. Tested with 210gsm watercolour paper and a 240gsm matte paper.
    Part of my ongoing testing of the ET-18100/L18050 printer

      Good to know - It seems that there is quite a bit of variance in this aspect - I have a pile of papers [some v similar to the one you mention] with distinct roller grooves.

    I think this aspect might be where my Canon Pro 100 might have this printer beat. Having the manual feed makes using heavier thicker papers no problem. The Pro 100's driver does include a decent amount of support for these " art " papers and Ive had much better than expected results despite only having dye based inks. Of course this Epson is vastly cheaper in terms of ink costs and that cannot be understated. I'm still dithering over this Epson you demonstrate here and the ET8550. Decisions, decisions 😉

      For myself as a Mac user, I'd like to see Canon brig back proper colour management for their ink-tank printers. That said All printers have their good and less good aspects ;-)

    Hi Keith. Thank you for your always very professional and accurate reviews. Please could you tell us something about the inks used by the ET-18100? They would appear not to be Claria, is it true? Apart from the question of the different type of blacks used, are these ET-18100 inks less performing than the Claria used by the ET-8500 or those used by printers like the Expression Photo XP-970 ? Using same paper. Both in terms of color quality (just after the printing) and possible duration over time. Obviously not with museum archiving intent. Thank you very much again.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před rokem +1

      So far I've had no information about the inks - nor was any available when I enquired.
      Remember though that all these ink names are but marketing adjuncts...
      That and the term 'colour quality' has no actual meaning in what I can test - does it make great looking prints [especially on gloss - see latest video] - yes. Would the vast majority of people even notice - probably not.
      There is no testing available to me to give any reliable longevity info. I note that the inks in the 18100 _seem_ to give noticeably less gloss differential. Any B&W print method I've tried shows considerable illuminant metamerism. This is a printer aimed at making glossy/lustre [RC media] colour prints very well
      Until I do the main [written] review I'll not be pulling the numbers together to see if there are any meaningful conclusions I can draw.

    Just got this printer and was planning to print with Ilford GALERIE Fine Art Smooth Paper 200 gsm but just knew about dye ink and this paper suitable for pigment ink! will try and see! what model of "Hahnemühle 210gsm watercolour paper" you used?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před měsícem +1

      The ink is not the issue with this printer - it's that it potentially marks softer papers.
      The HM paper was one from a few years ago - just made by them

    Hello, thanks for the video! I'm from Brazil and I'm looking for printers to print my photos that are available in the market in my country. I'm in doubt between the Epson that you showed in the video (L18050) and the Canon PROGRAF Pro-300. Which do you think is the best overall? I'm not supposed to print large quantities, but I'm concerned that the Canon Pro-300's cartridges don't last very long. What do you think? Thank you very much!

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před rokem +1

      The 300 is a pigment ink printer, but with smaller ink capacity
      It also handles a much wider range of paper types...
      I have a longstanding policy of never using the word 'best' - it means nothing without a detailed review of requirements.
      For some the cheaper ink will be important, for others the range of paper and pigment ink matters...
      The one area where the 300 excels would be for black and white where the et-18100 is not so good at all.
      Two very different printers...

    Hi Keith, I've been following your reviews of this printer like a hawk it seems to be pretty untouchable at the price point. However it also begs the question that in the price range of within say £300.00 of this model are there any other printers that will handle the thicker art papers without marking them or a significant difference in the price of Inks?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před rokem +1

      No - if you want a better printer you'll pay for a better printer ;-)
      This one is for lustre/gloss/metallic media - any art paper support is limited.
      I've no info on prices though as it's something I never investigate or follow in my reviews [they change around the world and over time]

    • @KeithCooper

    Hi Keith, i have an old Epson P600 in pretty bad shape ( bought it used online , and recevied it with barely not protection at all - i have to clean it manualy very frequently ) and wheb i manage to get it working properly, i really like the prints with the Epson archival matte paper, the colors look great. Did you have this paper tester on this ET 18100 , or the 8550 ?

    • @KeithCooper

      Only on the 8500/8550 - it shows marks on the 18100 I have here. I did specifically try it
      The 18100 is not a printer for many types of matte media

    Hi Keith. I wonder if you can help with a query. I print greeting cards onto 300gsm hammered card. I’m looking for a robust ink tank printer for handling large quantities of this gsm card. Someone recommended this printer to me, and I was wondering if you thought it would hold up? I mainly print black text so I need it to be nice and crisp?
    Any advice you could give would be helpful!

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před rokem +1

      I'm minded to suggest that anyone recommending this printer for that application hasn't tested one ;-)
      www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-18100-printer-review/
      Nothing I've tested handles 'large quantities'
      Also, unless the card is coated for inkjet use, it's unlikely to work well with most inkjet printers.
      Nearest I've tested would be this monster...

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  Před měsícem

      If EPL won't see the printer or work properly, it's likely an incorrect driver install [it matters not one bit that you downloaded the 'latest' driver]
      Delete all printer instances and go to epson.sn - do a proper setup and read ALL the instructions carefully. Every time I've seen an incorrect install, it's been USER ERROR - yes even when I've done it ;-)
