  • The true story of Gladys Marie Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, was an French American aristocrat and socialite. She was the mistress and later the second wife of Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough.
    She started retreating from the world and eventually became a complete recluse. By 1962, she had become mentally ill, much like her father and paternal grandmother, and was forcibly moved to St Andrew's Hospital, where she died in 1977, aged 96.

    Hugo Vicker's compelling biography of Gladys, 'The Spinx,' is well worth reading for those seeking the fine detail of her life.

    I enjoyed the photos, but whoever did the type-face captions for the photos had their closed! There are *numerous* typos on the dates. Example - Edith Deacon was born on 1867, not 1816. And Vanderbilt wasn't engaged to him in 1955.

    I heard the story of Gladys Deacon and her beauty. A perfect face and she felt the need to put wax in it! Ugh! Some things never change.

    What a life she created for herself but all destroyed. One stone after the other turning into isolation and then committed. Yet till the end, they say she had her mind. RIP

    very interesting, maybe she suffered from depression, by the fact that every human being let her down her entire life ..

      Donna Thomas and I think there’s nothing wrong with the accent. Not everyone speaks “the Queen’s English “ these days, thankfully!

    Gladys is definitely a victim of DV. A prisoner of class titleship n a baren marriage. Her mind n courage is beyond her years. Shes an inspiration to survive no matter what.

    Apparently, the Marlborough family pronounce the name of this particular Gladys as 'Glaydis' (the first syllable ehyming with 'stay' (I've visited Blenheim Palace many times and heard this repeatedly). 'No idea of the origin of this strange version of the name! Gladys was responsible for the eyes painted inside the roof of the portico in the courtyard of Blenheim.

    • @williamevans9426
      @williamevans9426 Před 5 lety +2

      @Scenic Northwest Apparently not; the guides at Blenhein Palace, at least, refer to her as "glaydis" (with the first syllable rhyming with "play', and the s pronounced), 'though this is the sole example of such a pronunciation of which I'm aware. In all other cases I've heard, the name is pronounced "gladiss" (with the first syllable, glad, rhyming with 'had').

      According to her biographer Hugo Vickers, the name Gladys was pronounced 'Glaydis' in North America.

    The pronunciation of some words and names are often completely off. Nothing to do with the narrators Yorshire accent just incorrect standard pronunciation.

      I'm a Yorkshireman. His pronunciation of key words shows it is a Lancashire accent (e.g. 'affur' for affair and 'thur' for there, etc.)
