Expensive Bernhardt Buffet Makeover with Paint

- I painted this buffet at the request of a client of mine along with a large dining table. After having her home remodeled, she wanted me to refinish this furniture black to go with her home's new look.

REGARDING THE DRAWERS: No they do not stick. I'm using light coats and the paint comes out in a mist. It either goes in between the gaps and gets on the drawers or it goes on the wood. For the sides and top of the drawer, sometimes the spray gets in there and covers it. When it doesn't, I touch up by hand. I didn't include this in the video because I make mistakes. --- My client had the option to spend $6000 - $8000 on new furniture or spend $2000 updating her current furniture, saving over $4000 on this update. What do you think about painting furniture this expensive?
Well, if it was not damaged in a way that is likely to be difficult to repair, [dog chewed], then I'd be loathed to have it painted. But with that sort of damage and the fact that she wanted a change of style, then painting it would have been environmentally friendly and cost effective.
I would have been tempted to have any low lying areas like the indentations on those pillars and the drawer edges highlighted in gold or perhaps large gold stencil work on the 2 cupboards and a more discrete smaller matching design on the centre of the drawers. A good alternative might be family coats of arms on the door panels, possibly with more discrete heraldic symbols o the drawer centres.
Got a really good dresser which will be painted as I have planned for other pieces. Unexpected from a building parking lot sake fir minimal amount. Gives me the guts to do something special of these things. If somebody wants to restore all of it when I no longer need it! Knock yourself out.
What type of spray system are you using?
That’s reasonable for two large pieces. However, I would have changed the hardware for something more modern, and not so tacky, and ornate, as the old pulls.
@@lakewrites I really like the old hardware on this furniture.
I love seeing someone using and enjoying their furniture...not worrying about the resale value or what the next person likes😊😊😊😊
Honestly, I can't understand people criticizing other people for painting a piece of furniture. It's an object. Whoever owns it can do whatever they want with it. People should treat people better than they treat furniture.. It's just an object. Anything you paint always looks beautiful.
It’s an object that was worth several thousands and now it’s now worth 1/2 perhaps not even a 1/4 of what it was…
@@sammieg8641 Ridiculous comment. Used furniture is essentially worthless unless it's from a noted designer. You can find buffets just like the original at your local swap meet or a yard sale for $200 at most. You can spend 3-5k for a Ethan Allen piece custom made in the USA and you won't get 500 for it if you try to sell it.
Former interior designer: Fantastic job. Really awesome. I understand everyone’s obsession with the natural wood, but it would (wood?🙄) have gotten lost in that dining room. Black was the absolute right way to go. Great job.
I think people get upset when a piece gets ruined by painting it. This was an improvement on the piece.
I don’t care how much the furniture cost, it was dated. You breathed new life into that set. Job well done, just gorgeous.
How true
Class never dates , sweetheart .
In the right home and surrounds , these pieces always look right.
Great job! I think it is sad that people get so judgmental about painting furniture. Anything to keep it out of the landfill, folks. Painted furniture can always be refinished back the wood grain at a later date, but once the piece is gone, it is gone forever.
Nice to see someone taking pride in what they do, preparation is key to a great job. Well done.
I have the bedroom set from this group. Have had it for almost 17 years and I love it!!! I appreciate the amount of work it took to refinish this piece because of the intricate details. Outstanding job!!!
The transformation of the furniture using the black satin paint, is stunning and very classy. I’m sure a lot of people thought it was gonna be just a dark crayon black, but this proves that you can use dark colors and have them be beautiful on furniture without everything being white and light tanned. Thank you for taking us along on this journey, I am relatively new to your channel and I haven’t made comments before.
My next statement is meant to be neither right nor wrong but for me I would’ve changed the hardware to a different color and a brush satin nickel or something just a little more modern and its style possibly but it doesn’t look bad with putting a hardware back on that you can. I would be proud to have this furniture in my home.❣️❣️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's beautiful but.....I couldn't love the beauty of the original more! That wood was beautiful!
I agree. It's criminal to paint over that beautiful wood.
In 40 years, it will be in someone else's house. And the new owner will remove the paint and bring back the original finish. It's the way things change.
Edit? You do love the wood 🪵 more?
@@Timetravel1111 💯 yes absolutely
as a 5th-generation woodworker, i agree completely.
It looked so beautiful in the customers dinning room.
Oh, I love that it was a client request! So cool.
Wow. Just wow. Stunning!
I think if it was mine, I’d have gotten updated hardware for it, but saved all the original hardware (maybe in a bag attached to the bottom) for whoever changes it next.
Thank you for protecting the integrity of the wood for future restoration. This is great!
I'm a lover of antique wooden futniture and I was horrified at first but the piece is more stunning after your skills transformed it. Beautiful!
I have to say, I hate this trend. BUT, this one is excellently done. So no foul.
Always best job. Thumbs up for him.
Yes
The way it was will come back in style someday. The stylists have us coming and going anything for a buck.
You definitely did a great job of renovating it. I am sure many people will appreciate it and because it will fit their decor better. But I personal favor the original finish.
If anyone ever wants to take it back to wood, that can be done.
As a designer myself, wood grain on top of wood grain on top of woodgrain almost always results in either very boring and quite often bad design.
It is VERY responsible of the owner to have her furniture updated in this manner - both from a financial and an environmental perspective.
End product is gorgeous!
What are you talking about? Are you a legitimate "designer"? As in, 4 year degree, licensed, etc.? Because I am. What you are talking about is "decor", not design. And, more importantly it isn't true. You speak to a style, not design or intentional design. Also, you state that this is responsible environmentally? I disagree. It may be a sustainable choice, but it certainly isn't green. UNLESS, he used eco-friendly paint, and even then I'm skeptical.
@@hdb80 Yes, I am a "legitimate" designer, though I am not challenged by residential design at all, so I don't care to earn money that way. I design/sell/project manage commercial kitchens working closely with the engineers, architects and builders - considerably more difficult/challenging than residential work. You most likely haven't had the opportunity to work with those that are severely mentally obsessed with the concept that any piece of furniture displaying any type of woodgrain immediately indicates "excellence in design" - because it doesn't. I did try residential work for a few months but I lose interest in forcing Great Aunt Bertha's purple lamp to fit into a design scheme based on the things the customer remembered she wanted to use. I'd much rather discuss the merits of 208- 3 phase electricity over 208 single phase. Though I will admit when a newbie engineer calls me raising 50 shades of holy hell because I don't size water heaters or grease traps (I provide all other connectivity and loads for all other equipment) I always giggle as I explain my Bachelors degree is in interior design, so those items are his job - as an engineer.
As for what's "ecological" - convince me you NEVER fly anywhere for a vacation and that you've never driven/owned an SUV - NEVER purchase disposable polyester clothing by the rack full - and never drink water from a plastic bottle - many of the WORST planet polluters. I have found that most people that bring up ecological impact in these instances aren't terribly wise at practicing what they preach.
@@cliftonmcnalley8469 Alright, I get you. Usually people on here calling themselves designers got their "education" from HGTV and think they are legit. No one is wise at practicing what they preach, I was just making a point in your original comment and being a pain, lol. I agree though about residential design. I think the design work can be challenging and fulfilling, but dealing with the "Bertha's" in design can kill the joy and creativity of it on our end.
I admire commercial kitchen design, incredibly difficult and demanding, but holds no interest for me personally. That stuff is genuinely a puzzle of engineering/function/efficiency/etc...makes my brain fry.
I promise, I've worked with the biggest morons in the world and the most "mentally obsessed" out there. But I agree, woodgrain doesn't equal excellence in design. I'm just at a point where I'm sick of painted furniture is all. Tired of that look slapped on top of everything. But at the end of the day, the function of a design is what makes me love our work. And by what you said, I think you may feel the same.
@@hdb80 Thank you so very much for your reply! It is so refreshing to hear from someone that "gets it".
I am a HUGE believer in function before form. It doesn't matter how "pretty" something is if it doesn't do its job first and foremost.
I did office design before kitchens. They were just introducing "articulating keyboard trays" and adjustable height desks. I learned very quickly the more moving parts you had to deal with (rarely a problem back then in residential) the bigger PITA the installation would be. Commercial equipment is nothing but moving parts, so for the first 2 months, I couldn't understand how the guy training me could go to sleep at night! Turns out, once you accept the fact that no matter how perfect you are in your job numerous people will ALWAYS screw up numerous things on every job. You can sleep at night even knowing that the next day may expose the fact that your brain regressed to office furniture for a brief moment when you spec'd the keg cooler and that "R" in the model number didn't mean the refrigeration would be on the right, it meant it came with NO refrigeration (Remote) and it needed to be ordered separately- which I didn't do - in the middle of a country wide heat wave which meant no refrigeration existed anywhere in the country -at any price- and the project hit a 2 week delay. But - I still love it. Customer called me laughing when he found out and told me not to worry about it because they were so appreciative of everything I did right!
I'm glad there are people that have the patience for residential design, because I am not that person. When my customers say, "Hey, my wife is having problems finding living room drapes." My advice is to point them in the direction of my favorite jobber. This isn't my device - I'm a woman - and my mostly male customers always feel comfortable approaching me with any design quandary they face. That's okay. 'Cause the next job site the contractor is liable to throw his arms around me and give me a huge hug because he's frustrated with my mostly male competition that literally knows nothing about construction! It's a weird world we live in.
I don't mind painted furniture at all, I just want to cry when I see the work completed poorly.
@@hdb80 you are making to much of this. dude just painted a solid made piece of furniture instead of tossing it.
The black looks incredible compared to the 90’s matchy group set.
While I cringe at some folks who paint beautiful old furniture, this is nothing that special. You have revived these pieces beautifully by painting them black. Oh, and comfy chairs!
You did an INCREDIB:E JOB!!!! It looked like it belonged in that house. Usually, when there's a Piece like this, I think -"Why can't they just REFINISH it?" But when I saw what you had to repair, I GOT IT!!!!
Great, meticulous work! Although painting that piece wouldn't be my personal choice, it came out beautiful, and I'm sure your client was thrilled! And, I thought using the lacquer as the first coat was brilliant, in case someone someday wants to restore this piece to its original glory. Was also impressed that you are so considerate regarding the noise your equipment makes. You are a good neighbor, my friend! Glad I found your channel! 🙂
Nice job but does painting it decrease the value
It looks beautiful! People will complain about painting wood but it keeps furniture out of landfills and someone will be loving it in their home again. Win win
PS It’s nice to see your face and smile 😊
Beautiful! I love how thorough you are and you dont skip steps. Not many people painting furniture go through all the steps you do. The finished pieces look super fine and that finish will be durable for many years. It looks brand new. Oh, and thank you to the owner for letting us see them in their home. Stunning.
Very smart man, I see SO Many flippers do it wrong. You are absolutely right when you put down lacquer or a shellac to seal the wood before you paint. It saves so much work when the next time it's stripped.
The sped up video is always so satisfying.
I love what you did to that piece. It looks elegant, love it. Great job.
Add on. It’s beautiful. You did a a great job on both pieces.
Hi Ryan, I'm a retired painting/remodeling contractor. I enjoyed watching your project. I really miss my career, but the old body said it was time to hang it up..... I've used this technique numerous times and I've also used Sherwin Williams cabinet coat in my old ugly golden oak bathroom vanity. It came out great and has held up beautifully for 10 years. A few times I painted the hardware in a nickel color or the oiled bronze color. Both also look nice. I'll be following you, to live vicariously..... Haha. Really nice job!
Stunning!!I loved seeing the pieces in place after you were finished. We never get to see that part of the process, so thanks for including it. This was one of my favorite of all your videos
Ryan, these pieces came out absolutely beautiful. Great job!👍
Beautiful redo. I prefer painted furniture to natural finish. It's actually wonderful to see your clients refreshing furniture as opposed to just buying new.
The end result is so beautiful. The paintjob is flawless. You make it look so easy, yet I realise it takes long and hard work to end up master this. I love the colour 💗
Thanks so much 😊
Gorgeous finish on these pieces..... what a transformation! I recently refurbished my 25 year old pine bedroom suite with Dixie Belle Moonshine Metallics (Steel Magnolia). It's just like having new furniture. I did change out the hardware as well. Unless your furniture is museum quality, go for painting it!
I was VERY skeptical about the blank paint, but it turned out to be beautiful!
You did a wonderful job. I could never have give up that beautiful warm wood.
Love this. I would have updated the hardware if I was the client, but it looks beautiful.
You can’t go wrong with black. It makes furniture so gorgeous. I’m sure the customer was very pleased with the makeover. Wonderful job.
Absolutely stunning !! Those 2 pieces were beautiful to begin with but you really made them look exquisite. I think it was a good decision for her to update what she had versus buying new, totally smart choice👏🏻👏🏻
Love the natural wood but the customers always right and you did a fantastic job 👌🏻
I gasped when you showed the first coat of black paint. Looks so much richer and substantial painted black. I absolutely love it! ❤
Those pieces are so elegant!! Your client made a great choice to update her existing furniture.
The finish was perfect as always! Loved that black on those pieces.
It is just gorgeous..so much prettier painted black. I actually think it looks even more high end!!
I too was a complete wood snob but I have opened my mind to the artistic painting of some older pieces. I love your work. I do wish textiles and handcrafted textiles in particular were regarded highly enough to save within families. Pieces such as needlepoint, knitted pieces, home made articles of clothing, even delicate needlepoint designs on tshirts and sweatshirts. My Mother in law was a master seamstress and knitter. She would put beautiful designs on the every day clothes of her grandchildren. I wish I had saved those clothes. Besides being very high quality and dear, they were Family Heirlooms.
Yes! I saved 3 pieces of my mother's bedroom furniture from the 50s and plan to refinish and update. They are not technically antique but mean something to me. She would have liked that I saved them and not bought new just because I can. She was very practical like that. Also, I have an old dresser from my grandma from the 1920s that I plan to clean up but not refinish. It is old and scuffed but I like it just the way it is.
Yes I have some beautiful handmade furniture that my grandfather made, and some from my dad, I’m really hoping one of my nieces or nephews will want to keep them.
Absolutely beautiful! You did an incredible job! As the home owner, I would update the hardware on the cabinet to make it a little more current. 😊
I think "silvery" hardware would have been nice with the black.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I say go for it. It's only things. You can't take it with you and if you like it and it's sturdy. Keep it but get it done professionally. Much better than a diy.
I loved it painted without hardware. Yes, modern silver hardware would look much more appropriate for this version.
I'm always very cynical about painting over wood on antique or antique-look furniture, but this is stunning! Definately an upgrade.
I share your cynicism. However, mine continues. It's not that I hate it..but I don't think it's an improvement. Sorry.
@@magmaraymaker.kweenkleokat8779
The only reason I'm not out completely is because the furniture is not a genuine, hand crafter antique to begin with.
@@wandererg5117 I agree and was sorta thinkin the same. We may be dating our selves slightly though.
Was scared about painting this furniture. However, they look great. That's a relief. 💖
You did a beautiful job. It turned out gorgeous. Nice to see somebody using that Surf Prep sander and liking it.
It looks so elegant, and man, you sure made that look easy! Awesome job! Love it!
Looks great in the black finish. I have always liked painted furniture.
This looks so jazzy. I don't get people who are horrified about painting wood furniture. If it's going to the dump and you're able to jazz it up, so much the better. I was hoping to continue flipping furniture when I retired, but as quickly as it became popular, the trend went by just as quickly where I live.
"It was going to the dump" but now it's in a starter castle.
If you ever try to strip paint off furniture, you'll know.
@@loosilu it isn't that hard lol.
It loses value but if you don't care about that then there's no issue.
I'm just not a fan of heavy wood furniture, so to me it looks infinitely better in black. However, I would have changed out the hardware, maybe even to a silver or stainless-steel modern style, but that's on the owner. The paint job was excellent, I don't think the owner could have asked for better. Definitely worth the $2000 rather than buying new for what? $8000? I love how professional your work looks, nothing homemade looking about it. Nice job.
Stunning! It gives those pieces an updated and completely different look!
Ryan, that set looks KILLER!! I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the 2nd coat of black lol so satisfying. I missed the live stream but LOVED seeing it in the house set up & so glad they invested in professional movers, too. Well done 👏🏽
I like painting hardwood furniture also and have been doing it for years. Family and friends consider me a subject matter expert and I always get questions. At 75 years old, I've been around long enough to have learned something. I love all the principals that are shown here. For those DIY'ers out there that love this look, but don't have the equipment, high quality airless spray, designated spray room, etc., I have used several techniques that can be deployed. Using wet/dry sandpaper with water to wash the paper clean helps in all phases of pre-work and final finish. For those that have to apply the paint with a small, smooth roller and paintbrush, I have found Valspar oil enriched Cabinet paint is a winner for keeping brush marks to a minimum. Again if you have a run or troublesome orange-peel finish, the wet sand paper, about 180 grit, is a great and dustless way to fix it!
I think this is a great channel and you certainly know your business... not everyone can avail themselves of your service and I have found these methods work for us folks that don't have a designated workspace and equipment. Thank you for taking the time in sharing your work.
Looks fantastic and is no longer dated. Great job.
It’s stunning on the light colored floor! Classic lines with a new, updated look. Love it❤️
I think you’re amazing. All the steps you took and the quality of your detail was amazing. Your work ethic and integrity came through. I wish you worked in los Angeles .i have an antique table from Italy that the extension panels are lifting. I think you’d be the guy I would trust to fix it. Continue your good work, young man.
Just Awesome such an Outstanding job! Lobe Love ❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️
You just upgraded that beautiful furniture to star status. WOW!!!
That is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! I was hoping the whole time you’d show it in its home.
Gorgeous! You saved them from having to purchase this set in black.
Thanks for the tip about lacquer. It looked great and I love that it can still be restored later. I also appreciate that we didn't have to watch an owner reveal and reaction, I personally find those awkward.
Nah. I'm not into recording the owner. I did like being able to show the furniture in my client's home, which I dont get to do often. I liked having it at the end of the video rather than just the piece being in my garage. Gonna have to try to do that more.
That is AWESOME !!!
I always s avenge for slightly used oldies..and painting it black is a stupendous idea .
Lots of work to do it right...but thankd to you I've got the step by step instructions.
THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH ❤😊
Your workmanship is magnificent! Excellent video. Thank you
Turned out absolutely beautiful-both pieces!
It looks great but the wood look is Definitely back in style and gaining popularity more everyday 💗
That buffet unit looks great! When you said the customer wanted a dark finish, I thought the end result wouldn't be so impressive but it was way more impressive than I had expected. That black satin finish looks great especially after applying it with the airless sprayer and it really fits well with the new decor.
While I don't like the black color, you did an absolute fabulous job of painting it.
First of all you did a beautiful job. I actually like it better black. Second, how I feel about painted wood pieces is it’s hers, She can carve her initials in the top with an axe if she wishes. When we finally saw it in the house we could see how black it was. Great job!
Your comment made me laugh out loud - you are so right!
It's absolutely beautiful job! Love the table too!
I never liked dark furniture but these black pieces are very sophisticate and beautiful. I loved them. Thank you for sharing
When you said this classic piece was to be painted black, I thought NO! But after your excellent work and seeing the item installed in a home setting it looked amazing. Great work by a skilled tradesman.
Awesome job! Looks stunning!
Hi Ryan, what an amazing job you did! It’s gorgeous!
Very pretty. I like that updated set. Beautiful job!
Normally, painting high-end fine furniture like Bernhardt would give me a heart attack, but you did an excellent job!
Absolutely stunning transformation! Great job and I thoroughly enjoyed watching you give these already-gorgeous pieces new life.
I also love the look of wood in original state but painting this piece brought out an elegance that did not show up as well in natural wood. It’s gorgeous ❤
The dining room table and buffet looks amazing.
Love you updating these buffet using color... ty
It was absolutely stunning after you finished. I really enjoyed the different angles you created during the recording .
Thank you so much!
Even though the original furniture was gorgeous, I really love it in the new black finish. Looks stunning in your client's dining room. Great job!
WOW.. it looks fabulous! The complex wood grain was hiding the architectural detail of the piece, whereas the uniformity of the solid black makes it the feature. Good call owner. Personally I'd take the room all the way to dark academia but that might start the redecorating dominos falling. There goes the budget! Either way... it looks great.
Love!! Thanks. Dark wood is extremely difficult to work with in todays homes. Some of us really don’t like it. Soooo thanks great job
It turned out just beautiful, you did a great job as always! Thanks for the video ;-)
The pieces look awesome. I really appreciate how you considered that someone may want to restore them in the future. But who would want to?
Who would want to?
Give that piece 10 years and the paint will look as bad as the original finish did. And by that time the '2022 black on everything' mainia has passed! So yeah, people will want to redo even that piece! Eventually!
It looks good. I’m older AND old fashioned but now thinking how some of my things would look painted!
Client is happy, thats all that matters. Beatiful jo!b😊
You know a piece of furniture is fancy when there are shelves supporting drawers... and you can use air compressor or even leaf blower for dust
Great idea with the leaf blower for dust but will it hang around in the room? Oh..slide the piece outside, right?
the 'shelves' between drawers are actually dust shields, to prevent stuff from above when drawers are pulled out and pushed back in , from ending up in the drawer below it. Definitely posh!
Awesome job! Awesome movers! Awesome dinning room!
You just helped me know that I have a very old Bernhardt! Thank you!
That really turned out beautifully. When I was younger, my bedroom was decorated in the Asian style with black furniture and gold flooring and floor length drapes. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the video.
Perfect finish in every way. I wouldn't of changed it because it was stunning before. But you definitely did amazingly 👏
Great job Ryan! You’re a perfectionist! Love how you handled every piece with care, even the hardware! I enjoy your videos. Take care..❤
I admire your expert workmanship. Absolutely beautiful!
The cabinet in classic style is beautiful after restoration and also the table with chairs , together looks very nice and elegant in
a classic style.
What a beautiful transformation Ryan .. Absolutely gorgeous inside your clients home ..stay blessed and see you soon😊❣️👍
Wow! This buffet turned out very nice!
Thank you sir!
One of my favorites.... absolutely stunning!!
I was loving the original but your transformation is absolutely stunning!!!
