    This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things czcams.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

    Use short concrete posts in the ground and then bolt on the wooden posts and therefore the wooden posts will last a lot longer and you can enjoy the view of the wooden posts compared to the ugly concrete posts. Concrete gravel board are a must to ensure the bottom of the panels do not rot through.

    You can get bitumen sleeves you put over the posts where the soil is in contact with the post above the concrete. Use a heat gun or torch to melt the tar and secure the sleeve on. Helps stop it snapping at ground level where they always rot. 👍

    I never use wooden posts, largest fence run I did was 100 metres all featheredge and rail on concrete post + a gate and a Field gate for a client, on my own I might add, it was in the most difficulty place and I used a hi-lift jack or logging jack to get the old concrete out, I had an eye bolt to attach to the concrete then used a chain and D shackles to attach the Hi-lift, best £40 I ever spent came in handy for removing concrete posts too.
    I always used Postcrete, I got mine on tradesman discount at Wickes. Love the groundwork in this video, If you replace the post holer get one from Toolstation, they have glass fibre handles. You've also just reminded me to sell off the 2 stroke post auger.

    Everyone saying use concrete posts... They said, it's part of a longer fence, so makes sense to match. Also, it's a boundary so the neighbour might be awkward if it's shared - ours was and wanted wooden posts, we wanted concrete as they'd outlast her, we ended up fitting wooden posts but with concrete spurs on our side - so from her side it looks like it did before with wooden posts, but we don't have to replace it in 6 years - everyone's happy.

      Do you think that the post rots below ground? If so why are they such a big to get out. The rot takes place where the post leaves the ground.

    • @Asgardsteve1
      @Asgardsteve1 Před rokem

      @@SkillBuilder The capillary bundles in the wood suck the water into the post through the end grain where its in the ground causing the wood to be saturated throughout the thickness of the wood whereas the post where it meets the ground absorbs some water but not to the extent that the wood below ground does. Thats why in oak framing if we have to bury the timber we tend to surface burn the wood so the carbon layer prevents the water entering the bundles which are exposed on the end grain and the absorption through the surface of the timber in the ground and at ground level.

I use bitumen on the post also + leave an inch gap at the bottom of the panel so its not in contact with ground if the customer doesn't want gravel boards.
