I wish I would’ve refrained from getting my child a phone. I’m so happy to see this and read the comments. I’m not crazy laying down rules. They don’t need access like this before 18. I set restrictions this week and now he’s cut off at 7pm daily. School is out..practice and activities are done for the day & we are winding down having family time, doing homework, and simply connecting.

First of all. Parents. Gadgets are NOT a have-to. They are a privilege and want. HUGE difference. Secondly, Parents, no kid under 13 should have their own phone. They are not in charge. You are. When it’s time to do chores, talk, school work, etc. it’s time to put down all devices, games, systems, computers, etc etc etc etc. and time for “Real Life”. I ran my house this way. Real Life (over gaming etc) comes first. I am in charge of the bill, buying the gadgets etc and the kids NEVER run my house. Stop with letting them call the shots and take back control. :)

How to "manage" it? Simple, DON'T GIVE THEM ONE! They do make non-smart emergency phones for kids that just have buttons programmed to call a specific number (parent, etc.), and another for 911..

All this goes out the window when our school systems give away free computers funded by Google. You know what else goes out the window? THEIR GRADES.
