Ana is a phenomenal actress. I personally hated Blonde but I love her acting and how committed she is.
If she truly cared about marilyn, she wouldn't have done this movie. But it seems like she couldn't care less.

She's so good at accents. During her period in Spain, she sounded Spanish even in TV interviews, even though she's Cuban. Many Spaniards took for granted she was one of them, same as Americans first thought Hugh Laurie was American just by watching House.
She's terrible at accents.. Which is one of the reasons Blonde was unwatchable.

Well, it's evident that some people can't hear differences in pronunciation and accents as well as others. Personally I speak 6 languages and I'm very pedantic when it comes to sounding as native as possible speaking them, although I know that I fail in 2 of them because I'm not 100% fluent yet. When I try to tell my mum how to say a certain word in English she can't tell the difference between how I pronounce it and how she does. So that's possibly why a lot of ppl said she was great. Another reason - we live in an era where "woke" people praise literally anything and the tiniest criticism is considered hate.. So a lot of people are saying she was great to be "supportive"... Which pisses me off because not everyone is always going to excel at everything and there's no need to encourage ppl and lie to them simply for the purposes of "supporting women". Marlin's accent was part of the way she spoke and a huge element of her charm.. So she failed to do her justice 100%....hugh Laurie was flawless in house, Matt Damon's Spanish is great, almost any British actor doing an American accent pulls it off... And it is their job to do so. The fact that she failed to imitate an American accent to perfection means she isn't good enough or that she didn't work hard enough, maybe needed more time. Doesn't mean her acting in other films was bad, by all means, when she plays a Latin American in other films her acting is perfect. No hate, it's just an observation made by a multilinguist and professional interpreter. 🤷🏻♀️

Blonde was not written by a man, it was written by a female author, Joyce Carol Oates. Its historical fiction, but most of the events that occurred in the film are based on real events, for instance, Marilyn's mother was unstable, and she did try to kill her, Marilyn ended up in an orphanage, Joe DiMaggio was abusive, she had an affair with JFK and he used her, etc....

@@raysand2557 yeah but that doesn’t change the fact that the film- and book for that matter- heavily romanticized the abuse and mistreatment that Marilyn had to deal with. Her life was incredibly tragic as it was, but a lot of the really bad things that happen to her in the film are greatly exaggerated, and filled with gratuitous nudity and sexual violence, and not even to the audience’s benefit because a lot of it was only speculation. It was just an incredibly dark and bitter film to sit through and needlessly so. Not to mention that the book still heavily speculates on a lot of events in Marilyn’s life so it’s not even all completely factual which makes the exaggeration worse because we don’t even know if a lot of that stuff happened at all. Her relationship’s with the Kennedy’s was pretty obvious but it’s never been confirmed and neither has the stuff with her father.

Great actress and Andrew Dominik is a brilliant and interesting filmmaker, his films such as Chopper, Assassination of Jesse James, Killing Them Softly and his work with Nick Cave has all been amazing to me, Jesse James is a masterpiece in my eyes. I’ve seen so much hate for Blonde that I decided to wait a while before i see it, i want to see it with an open mind.
I might be wrong here, but one thing i do know is that i find Andrew Dominik similar to another director, Darren Aronofsky. They’re not like mainstream filmmakers, their films are way more challenging than what you would see in your usual blockbuster and they’re often very hard hitting films. I see both Dominik and Aronofsky as today’s equivalent to film directors from the 70’s, such as William Friedkin, Martin Scorsese and David Cronenberg for example. They have a very distinct vision that just won’t always appeal to many people. They both make very layered films that I’ve gotten more out of with each viewing. Blonde could be one of those types of films.
I’m highly doubtful that Andrew Dominik made Blonde with bad intentions based on his body of work so far and the way he comes across in interviews, he seems a nice and very intelligent guy. I think the reach that Netflix has, has just brought a lot more negativity than usual for a movie like this. That and i feel a lot of people have gotten super sensitive and get offended over anything and everything these days.
I also like Dominik's prior work. But Blonde is a self-indulgent and unbearably pretentious piece of pseudo-art.
And whether it was made in good faith or not is irrelevant to a movie's reception.
