Putting the engine back in our 1950 Chevy pickup | Redline Update #38

- Our Chevrolet 3600 pickup has been making steady progress, but even though it now boasts a fuel tank and a new wiring harness, the heavily-patina’d pickup stranded on the two-post lift hasn’t seen any major changes recently. That’s about to change, though, because Davin finally has enough small-scale projects done to tackle something big. Engine-installation big.

Remember my Dad had a 1950 Chevy sedan with an inline six, maybe the same one, and it ran just fine. What great memories and
to know that trucks and cars back then were built of metal and built to last. Really miss my Dad and that car.
You're doing the Lord's work. Beautiful truck.
It's nice to see a practical driver grade original come together. Tanks for sharing.
Age 15, the 1st engine I ever built was a 53' Chevy 6 cyl. Fun with Dad...RIP. Newk from Kentucky
I got in the shop and got my 76 Toyota Corona going! Thanks for the motivation!!!
Hi Davin, yours is the best channel on CZcams always fun to watch. No bleeping or bloopin just great car stuff...thanks..Frank
Yeah he makes it look easy. I'm sure it isn't but his video's are frustration free and always interesting
ENGINE DAY!!! Awesome Davin!!! Love the Chevrolet badge still being on the heater box!! God you have a great job!!
Thanks 👍
So glad to see you put the six back in. Many want to put a big block eight on old cars and trucks. I think the old ones deserve to have what came in them.
DAVIN!
I'm right there along with you folks in spirit - this is the FUN part of putting one back together, where you
can actually see light at the end of the tunnel. :-)
By the way, whoever picks the background music for your show is doing a stellar job!
Looking forward to the next one. Y'all be careful over there.
-Ed on the Ridge
Thanks for taking us along. Love the details as well! Don't forget to give us the details as you work out even the "small" problems. That's what we're here for - to learn from the expert!
C'mon man. Sand blast cabinet is right there. 45 minutes and a can of chassis black for that heater and it wouldn't have to suffer paint envy compared to that stovebolt six.
Seriously. thanks for all the great videos!
Agree with you Joel, I'm a detail freak. The heater could have been detailed since it was all apart. Hope heater core was pressure tested?. Love everything else your doing.
Thanks for sharing Davin👍
Yes we remember this engine "Shizzle Sticks"😉
Stay safe Bro❤
This is the engine with the head made out of eggshells. The "Shizzle Sticks" engine is the Olds straight 8
Hahaha the "Shizzle Sticks" was the far too gone beyond repair Buick Naihead heads
@@ginacoronel6872 Thanks for correcting me😉
@@billbeyer657 Thanks for correcting me 😉
Sweet man, first video I watched and you answered my question. I've got a Motor's truck repair manual, it says to remove engine and transmission together, but that looked impossible because of the cross member. You verified my assessment. Oh, and nice work, really clean. Thanks. 1951 6400.
Love watching this channel. I'm finishing up my project car which is a 91 Toyota MR2 that I just finished rebuilding the motor. All i have left is fixing the gauges and bleeding the air out of the coolant system.
In the past when working on removing and/or repairing a heater core, or anything under the dashboard, I've reclined the front seats and eased myself, laying on the seats upside down with my head on the floorboard, looking up into the front console area. Obviously what I needed to do was place my vehicle on a hoist, remove the floorboards, and stand on the ground to work under the console. All these years I've been obviously doing it wrong. Gee! Why didn't I think of this.
Great job on the truck. Loving these updates.
Your garage is amazing! Hello from Brazil!
Thank you Davin! Really love the fact that you saved this from possibly the junkyard and being crushed! It looks great, it's coming along nicely! Can't wait to see it driving.
Davin's moto of "get out there, get your work done, so you can go work on your ride," makes for an awesome outro. But, I also find it to be a great motivating phrase.
I watch the videos and think man I really wanna go work on my truck. But yes I need to go finish my homework first, so I can get a degree and work on awesome cars like that someday.
Same, I’ve only got one final left but I’m also having a hard time finding a job so I can finance my projects this summer, I’ll find a way though!
👑👑👑👑
Nothing like a little surf music for putting in the heater core! Good choice!
Lookin' good Davin. Thanks for sharing your Garage Time with us.
Can't wait to see that truck cruising down the road....
Same here! Hopefully very soon!!
My dad's 1950 Chevy panel truck did not come with a heater. He added a South Wind gasoline fired heater to it. Also, there was a Motorola tube AM radio under the dash where a heater might go. At 14 years old I used to listen to Ode to Billy Joe when it first came out on that radio. Must have been Summer of 1967. The truck is still parked in the same spot 53 years later. Somebody stole the starter. The engine quit when the fiber timing gear went out. Your project brings back memories....
Again, thanks hagerty great quality videos for all of us, awesome 🔥🔥
Thanks David
ALWAYS enjoy your stuff!
Rusty or not, the level of dedication and attention to detail is above and beyond...what i have come to expect from Hagerty quality work. Thanks for continuing to post more content! Keep up the good work!
Glad yall are back in the shop and the truck is comin along amazingly well i love the film
i really like going to car shows and seeing original cars in this shape then going and seeing someones 100 thousand dollar fantasy car
I owned a 1952 and loved it. Also owned 2 -1955 b series pick up wished i had it now
Davin, looking great so far man ! Can't wait to see it all done !
finally, redline \m/ I've been waiting for this for so long
Thanks for this episode.
My new age Steve McQueen!!!
Yah baby!!! It was great to see the engine go in... BTW, the bandaid makes you one of us now :)
Great video!! Great truck!! Thank you!!
Looking good. Thanks for the video.
Gavin and Hagerty crew. Nice job as always. Love the videos, to the point and getting work done.
A lot of youtuber vids are 28 mins of talking about what they are going to do and 2 mins of work with music.
Love the truck video's, hope to see more on it. Thanks again.
Awesome. Thank you for sharing. 🇨🇦😎
Been long awaiting this moment to finally happen
Big thumbs-up 👍
You have to love the old heater boxes. They're easy to get out, simple and metal, not a fiber plastic unit crammed into a spot requiring hamster mechanics to work on. Keep up the awesome rebuilds.
YES I pray the box on my '87 Porsche 924s doesn't leak and then I'll have to take apart the whole dash...
Gr8 work.
I miss my 55 IH r100. Nice job!
Great progress. Looking forward to hearing it run....again. At this time, there are 6 dislikes on this video. WTF dislikes this? Why bother watching?
Love the originality of the car, once the chop top/louvre boys are done its another classic lost forever.
The best channel
Can't wait to next episode
Parabéns pelo excelente trabalho realizado nessas máquinas antigas!!!!!!!
Very nice. Loving it from Chile. Jim
Davin is the man!!
I wish i could had a mechanic like Davin in my hood, i will probably move next to his shop xD
They do make Outer Cowl Panels where the front fenders attach to the cab.
Getting closer
Hagerty can you please give us your playlist
For only four gears forward, those transmissions are solid weight and pound for pound three of them would make a entire foreign car. Maybe more as my back remembers how hard those were to stab. Nice putting the heater in and standing in a empty cavity I bet as its not easy to get to all the stops on the heater adjustments and setting the little clamps in place. Nice work
I can understand not wanting to put much time & effort into restoring the chassis and body but making the inside of the cab clean and presentable is a must, just to keep the rust and grime off your clothes.
Have you met Davin? I don't think the man owns clean clothes. 😆
What's the cool cool music?
Gotta get some.
That's a great video and song. The music we usually use in our videos is stock production music that's not publicly available.
Best time when i watching u 😘😘
I do enjoy these videos/updates. Where are you with the straight 8 Buick?
This whole pandemic thing has slowed our progress on the Buick a bit! We're waiting on a lot of custom bits and pieces... pistons, intake/exhaust manifolds, etc. We should be able to post an update fairly soon on where we are with everything. Stay tuned!
@@Hagerty I'm very excited. I never imagined the virus would interfere with parts companies. A few days ago, I needed a special hammer, and my local Autozone was open so I could get it. I guess things are different with parts stores that specialize in rare or obsolete automotive parts and equipment.
That SM 420 is one heavy chunk of cast iron. I changed a clutch on my truck a few years ago solo. I doubt that I could do it again without help.
Cool music !!!
Hola hagerty!!!!
Gratidão, gracias, tank you. Falo aqui do Brasil
Awesome! Could you please share a back story about yourself? How you got into cars, engines, rebuilds, what classes i.e. (HS shop) apprenticeship you took ect.
Thanks enjoy all the rebuilds and videos.
Dang y'all took your time with this update lmao
There's kind of this pandemic thing happening right now...
praying extra for all that make me feel happy, so, praying for extra you ;-)
Thank you. Job well done.
Did I see rust on the heater core?
or my eyes were getting fooled.
W.O.W.
I'm almost certain that's the same 6 that Bedford used in their trucks, Vauxhall in the Wyvern, Cresta, Viscount and lastly Ventora. Nice motor, rather heavy but good lazy torque and SO smooth.
I'll drive it in the winter...
i wish all your videos were longer!
hi sir
Im watching u from other side of planet
Oficina das raridades 🏁🇧🇷🚥🚦
A future rebuild could be an Allis Chalmers XT190 with a hydraulic bucket. Weld some hooks on it and it makes those engines easier to remove and replace.
OK, now what are you going to do now that you plugged up your access hole in the floor with the trany. LOL. Keep on smiling.
Any reason you didn't soak that heater in Evaporust?
How are the buicks coming along?
When is the straight 8 coming back on?
if you cant find a new cabin filter just clean the old one with some air..
“I need two screws for the horn” Don’t we all.
Hello please add subtitles in Spanish I really like this series. Greetings from Culiacan Sinaloa Mexico.
question, if your heater core was shot, would u be able to get a nos or replacement or have one made based on the old one? great vids guys 😁👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏
Heater core - there are replacement heater cores and you could have one custom made to fit or at least retro if need. In the past week I did find a company that appears to have the correct one for the truck, although I am still going to wing it with the one I have.
I mostly watch these videos because of the background music
1:35 Ruuskie surf rock👏👏👏
Lol the music is great but the content is as well
@@averagecarguy420 sure thing 😄
Yup
why do you allways use those belts to pull up the Engine? is it safe?
I really dig the channel and the progress. Y'all could do less (and shorter) slo-mo bits...
A Barra six would go great))). oi oi oi
How was that free all lube? We just got it at work I was going to try it out what do you think of it Davin?
Just curious.. are you leaving the frame and all the rusty stuff alone? It's hard to keep up since Haggerty has so many projects/vids. thanks. !
That was their plan. Make everything mechanial function properly, not gussy it up as a show truck. New brakes, engine/trans rebuild, new suspension components, and wiring. This way, they can drive the f out of it, and not be worried about cosmetics, just a reliable old truck.
Must have a heater and defroster. Not optional.
He He... He said.. "Mate it to the transmission"
How come you can’t check that heater core before you put it in there?
I didnt see it in video- lie to me if you didnt, rubber or thick foam around heater core to keep from vibrating and wearing a hole in it. also keeps air going thru core and not around it.
Why you dont sandblast and paint the frame ?
what was the first year for an automatic trans in a Chevy pickup?
The "powerglide" was first used by Chevy in 1950
Hydra-Matic was first used in a Chevrolet truck in 1954, GMC 1953
does anyone know what manual he is using at 5:36?
👍
The day I trust a serpentine belt to hoist an engine will never come
Why? I have infinitely more faith in the serp belt than say a strap from Harbor Freight
is it even possible to find a rebuilt 216 or 235 long block if you need one ?
235's can be found. Good luck finding a 216. There's a reason we had to sort of bandaid ours together a bit!
@@Hagerty never heard of a babbit bearing until your video, did some research, I would prefer normal insert bearing my self , Thanks for all your videos
There are a couple guys around that have some rebuilds sitting on the shelf. And cores are available since lots of people pull and replace with a V8. Just ask around you will be surprised what is available.
