Once the residence of a Dutch Prince, Bad Bentheim is home to one of the best-preserved medieval hilltop castles in Northwestern Germany. A true hidden gem.
The town is small, the castle is big. It is build on a rock that slowly rises up from the earth, west of the village. The Bentheim Castle dates back to the 11th century and has witnessed centuries of history.
Over the centuries, the castle served various purposes, including as a residence for the Counts of Bentheim. Today, it stands as a well-preserved historical landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's feudal past.
The castle is constructed from Bentheimer Sandstein, a distinctive local sandstone known for its durability and unique warm color. This material has been a key aspect of the town's architectural heritage. More about this sandstone can be explored at the museum that is located at the foot of the castle.
Due to its strategic location near important trade routes, Bentheim Castle played a crucial role in medieval commerce.
