    Can you please tell me, have you checked how bloodwood works with ash and walnut in terms of thermal expansion coefficients? What is the risk that these types of wood are not friendly with each other, resulting in cracking, swelling, or splitting? Also, what if I wanted to make the board wood-block end to top to make the wood structure more fancy - would gluing them be any different?

  • @timothyvroom
    @timothyvroom Před 2 lety +2

    Question: after you frame the board/plywood -- how do you make the thickness of the frame lower -- so the whole height of the chessboard + frame doesn't need to fit in the groove in the box? I've watched this video & Jay Bates one, and am not seeing this step -- any explanation would be much appreciated! Hoping to make this as a gift for Christmas this year. Thanks for the video!

    • @CReevesMakes
      @CReevesMakes  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Tim! Good question and it was quite the learning process. Basically in the end, I cut the sides as rabet cuts on my table saw but you can also use a router table or router with an edge guide. Email me and I will see if I have old pics of the project that illustrates this step. Creevesmakes@gmail.com

    Wonderful board!! I just started making a couple cheeseboards. Can I ask, why do people mount the cheeseboard to plywood?

    • @CReevesMakes
      @CReevesMakes  Před rokem

      The plywood is a stable and flat base. It minimizes the amount of work and thickness on the actual chess board part.

  • @thomaskrebs2955
    @thomaskrebs2955 Před rokem +1

    After you glued the walnut border to the board, did you rabbet that with a dado stack? At 7:25. Video doesn't show that step.

    • @CReevesMakes
      @CReevesMakes  Před rokem +1

      Yes those parts were rabeted prior to being put on. The footage was way out of focus so it didn’t turn out. Watch Jay Bates chess video and you will see a better process of that step.

  • @JamieDovell
    @JamieDovell Před 2 lety +1

    How do you make the edges on the board itself so it slides into the box?

    • @CReevesMakes
      @CReevesMakes  Před 2 lety

      There is a dado groove around the sides of the box and then the board itself has a rabbet cut on it. The rabbet slides into the groove.

  • @chrisd3648
    @chrisd3648 Před 3 lety +1

    Do you have to worry about wood movement in something like this?

    • @CReevesMakes
      @CReevesMakes  Před 3 lety

      You always have to wonder about wood movement but the panel is cut very thin (less than 1/4") and glued to plywood. So, the individual squares COULD move but I doubt it. Also, if its kept indoors in a temperature controlled area it should help. The only factor could be high moisture.
