We get a lot of comments on this video about Shaun referring to the pieces as "the Horse, the Castle, and the Pointy One". Some people think he is serious (probably a vocal minority)... well let me just clear the air. He 100% thinks they are called the Horse, the Castle, and the Pointy One. I haven't had the heart to correct him, and all of your commenting won't help as he can't read, and doesn't know how to operate a computer. For the record, he also refers to the Queen, King, and Pawns, as the Mom, the Dad, and the Babies respectively.
Hey Chris, little thing I think would make this set a lot better: you can drill a shallow hole at the bottom of each piece and add a metal piece to make the pieces weighted.
Man I got in here twice! Screw it, let's make it the 6 eyes channel. It would be the perfect fit, one ridiculously good looking guy and two tall thin guys with baseball hats. The Thickni Guy and the Foureyes Guys.
This is really beautiful. Gives me hope I can one day do one. The complicated turning of many sets intimidates me and I don’t have a lathe. This is on the future projects list for sure. Thanks.
DUDE! I want to make a chess set and already had kind of an idea for what I wanted the pieces to look like and you've pretty much done exactly what I was thinking!
I've been planning to do a group project with some friends on making a chess board so I wanted to watch this to get an idea and some inspiration and this video was amazing and the end result was also very good.
I love the stylized pieces. Instantly recognizable as exactly which ones they are but not over designed. I wish I could buy them somewhere they would go well with most any board.
Just beautiful. Love the original design of the pieces. Felt in the storage area is a nice touch. Maybe weight and felt the bottom of the pieces? Top notch!!
very nice! usually I am not a big fan of blocky chess set style but this one looks good (next one maybe you think about felting the pieces and also weighting them - chess players love that and are likely to pay way more money)
I bought this as a gift for my friend czcams.com/users/postUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. The projects in it are things you probably would have a go at with clear instructions, pictures, videos and diagrams throughout. Great for a beginner/amateur wood worker.
Pretty clever to make the pieces with the table saw. I like using the pencil to hold those small parts, I am going to adopt that technique. Nice video thanks.

Yes -- it's surprising how good design overcomes the natural bias towards traditional shapes. I once played on a highly stylized set made from round and square hollow metal cylinders. The crenellated tops of the kings and queens locked together -- with all the other pieces and pawns nested securely inside! I was fully prepared to find fault with such a radical departure from the traditional -- but like yours seems to be, it was easy and fun to use . . .

Aww that’s sad it breaks my heart
Drilling out the bottoms of the pieces and glueing in a lead weight would be a cool addition.
Yeah, I know that is fairly common. Might be something I try if I ever do these again.
@Gary Lau That's more of a travel board feature. It's kind of annoying to have pieces sticking to a regular tabletop board.
Exactly my thoughts. Would do a lot for the feel of the board.
Yeah and some felt on the bottom of the pieces so they don’t make too much noise
Great idea
