So the bottom line here is you haven't actually ridden the Ducati. You haven't actually even sat on the Ducati. This video is a waste of time.
Yes it is my opinion, not facts, I mean I haven't even seen the bike in person and wont see one for another month or two in dealerships near me.. I'm hoping I can get out and ride it!
just looking at base specs I dont think the ducati would ride as fun as the ktm, you dont buy a supermoto for hp high revs and top speed you buy it for low end grunt and acceleration I would imagine the ducati will probably feel a little gutless down low in the rev range when compared to the ktm and who cares about top speed on a 300lb bike its not fun at 80 and the ktm can already do that no problem. What I do like about the ducati is a modernized dash with a lot more control over rider aids, hopefully ktm/husky/gasgas take a page out of the ducati book and update the smcr with a dash thats been outdated for the last 15 years
The KTM 690 did have a nice dash in the 2014 model. Instead of improving on it, they ruined it with a minimalistic approach.
I think the torque differences are minimal to be that noticeable. Also the Ducati is said to have more weight bias towards the front wheel that makes it more responsive in the corners. This fact, I prefer
@@davidmallia628 yes i have two ktm 690 one from 14 and one frome 19. i like the dash on the 14 best
HP is Torque x RPMs divided by 5252 for engines. So the extra HP on the Ducati is all coming from the higher RPMs.
Yes, those RPM much higher in the rev range that most SM riders will not use. It's not going to be any faster or more fun than the KTM.
i own a smcr 22 model and what i get from all this is that the ktm finaly has a competitor so they will FINALY improve the 690 , i would buy a newer model asap just give us a duke style dash and like 5mm more bore and 10 mm less stroke and i would buy it
Agreed 690 Times sir ❤
In the UK; currently the 2023 KTM 690 SMCR are on sale (brand new) for around £8000-8500 v Ducati at £10500 both prices OTR, aesthetically the Ducati SM looks the business with twin exhausts, headlights, plastics, colours, and far better dash/display.....saying that I'd still buy a KTM at the above prices.
Few cons about the Ducati. It revs to higher RPM yet produces only 1-2 more hp which means you have to rev it more to make almost the same hp. The KTM will give you the same hp but 2,000 RPM earlier so the KTM is faster and that also explains why it has higher torque. The higher RPM is simply a result of ECU mapping. Ducati also has a smaller engine which means they're probably pushing it way beyond it's limit just to compete with KTM thus making reliability a concern. Calling a 659 a 698 is also misleading and clearly trying to compete with KTM. Not to mention Ducati has a reputation for lying about their performance. Lastly, the KTM just has a better supermoto aesthetic and the hyper looks like a version of their already existing hypermoto.
You sir are the real deal haha you know all the damn good points! I will have to agree, the looks arent that great? Like why is everyone so excited about that?..
@@LifeWellRidden I'm sure Ducati fanboys will disagree though 😂But it's good to have competition.
The higher RPM capability has a lot to do with the desmodromic valve mechanism which positively closes the valve as well as opening it. To beef up the valve springs on a conventional poppet valve to prevent valve bounce at high RPM increases internal drag which would sap the power on a single cylinder 4 stroke by an unacceptable amount. I have to agree that on this type of bike high RPM is meaningless. The KTM is already on my bucket list.
Don't you ever get it? It's super untuned of 1299 panigale with stroker kit. Stock supposed to be 102 to 107.5 hp. It's 30+ hp untuned single piston of 1299.
@@brianpope8280 I don’t know that much on Ducati or their new motor but would love to see someone bring it to that power number!
Do you change the motor oil only within that (1000-1500 mls) short intervalls or including all two filters as well?
I do every screen and paper filter during the oil changes. Sort of a waste but when I buy the kits from amazon for like $64 it comes with all of them so I might as well. No matter what, the screen filters come out of the bike for cleaning every time
+$1500 just to get the quickshifter and a better livery vs the feature included in the base KTM/HQV/GsGs, and all that extra 3hp 2000 RPM above the KTM with still less torque. ... On an un-provem Ducati single cylinder.
... Yeah, hard pass.
Id love to test drive one before I make any real assumptions but Ive fallen in love with the 690's quirks and dynamics were it would have to be a major improvement over the ktm to make me switch but till then Im probably sticking to team orange for a while. Btw that ending riding clip you were like a street over from were I live gave me some weird dejavu lol
3:30 I am considering getting a 690. Do they really catch fire after you scrape them after wheelie ? Is it a common issue or is it just rare ?
I think in reality this is rare but "rare" things tend to make it to the internet very quickly haha! It is a fear of mine, just my thought (gas tank crack + hot exhaust running past = BOOM!) But you could say the same about any bike with a tank over an engine..
I wouldn't worry about the 1st fall but I would worry about the 2nd+, just make sure their are no cracks or leaks and its well maintained and you should be good! Good luck with the 690!
Don’t buy one! The most unreliable bike I’ve ever owned
Personally, i think it looks great and I hope that it performs how the numbers suggest it will. I don't like the marketing videos because it makes me feel like a crusty old bugger, but in reality, it's probably guys like me who are in their 40's that could afford such bikes. When I was the age of those kids in the Marketing videos I didn't have a pot to piss in and my bikes were what ever i could afford and keep running. So, in short, I want one because I want to pull wheelies and enjoy riding a bike that isn't about top speed and power figures. Watch this space.;-)
mt DRZ and 701 both say in the manual to check the valves at 18k after the initial service I'm pretty sure
What you think our SMCR makes with the mods like intake PC exhaust etc? Idk what it is but im thinking its probably gonna beat the Ducati HP numbers
KTM still beats the Ducati numbers. Ducati revs to higher RPM yet produces only 1-2 more hp which means you have to rev it more to make almost the same hp. My guess is it's minimul but could be more.. I think my next step is to find a dyno that I can test the power on..
@@LifeWellRidden I would really be interested in that bro! That would def be a good vid!
I just seen gixxer brah Dyno his Yamaha 450 sumo today I think those are making like 65hp. I think ours might be high 70 but that's just a guess. Idk what they even make stock so I might be way off lol
@@22smcrrider96 haha I’ll have to find a dyno near me.. hmm maybe I’ll have to make that a winter experience!
@@LifeWellRidden I think you are on to something my man!!
Never know you may find out that tune needs tweaked 🤷. That would be the place to adjust it if needed!
I mean I think rottweiler got it set pretty good but you never know
I’ll never reach either but what’s the top speed comparison?
I haven't seen any "top speeds" for the Ducati yet.. I know I usually end around 124-126 but I would assume the Duc will be higher
I'm from a dirt riding back ground and currently have a husky 401 and a Suzzie 750. I took the RVE for a test ride yesterday and I bloody loved it. What an animal! I would definately get a few tickets on this thing. The exhaust pops on aggressive downshifts was a touch. I don't think the extra for the RVE is worth it. You are paying for the different paint and the quick shifter. The quick shifter can be added to the stock bike for 300 quid. The motor is essentially half the Panegali, with all of its working parts, so that is decent. I do have a slight concern that a single that is running so hard, may have some longevity issues, but only time will tell. I am taking the ktm for a rip today. I will come back and report on my thoughts. Note, I am only riding the KTM as the Husky isn't available in my town, that's what I am leaning towards.
How did it go on the 690?? I wanna hear!
Ducati 660 cmc 151 kg 66 nm 77,5 cv
Ktm 693 cmc 147 kg 74 nm 74,5 cv
for $14k id skip this and do the 950, but id also stick with the 701/690
You do realize the 950 base is like 16k and the sp is 3k more right ? The 698 otd will be around 14-15k. Your logic makes no sense.
KTM/ Husky is a damn good platform. Was considering one before I went with Hyper 950. I love my Hyper but I want to check on the Supermoto when the dealership gets one.
I'm excited for that day too! Maybe even take one for a spin..
Oil changes are cheap insurance. I go to the 2500 mile mark or the next Spring at start of riding season.
I like more Ktm690 smcr than Ducati hypermotard698 mono,I owned a ktm 690 and all you said about it is true 🙏great fun bike 😍and very easy to work on it.
you change oil at the end of the season and at the beginning? that doesn't make any sense
Fresh uncontaminated oil is a good idea for winter or long term storage.
So an oil change before putting it up for the winter is good practice.
It makes perfect sense.
Where do people get this 12,999$ for the KTM 690 SMC -R and Husqvarna 701 pricetag ? I have not seen that price anywhere. I was in KTM/Husky and a Ducati store yesterday in Sweden and the standard full price for the KTM 690 SMC-R and the Husqvarna 701 SM brand new -23 for both of them was 10 530$. The Ducati Hypermotard 698 they did not have in the store yet but the dealer told me "out the door with taxes and all it will set you back 13 210$, and that is the standard (not the RVE) without quickshifter on it.
I guess the price you show on the Ducati here probably is correct because you yanks always get your prices without registration fees and such things so you always pay more out the door than the initial price says it will cost.
But the KTM 690 SMC-R price here is waaay of. I bought mine 2 years ago and my friend bought one this fall two months ago, brand new out the door full price for 10 530$!!!!
That is more than 2000$ difference. Where did you get your price from, maybe it is KTM's 2024 price for the bike? That they will push the price up that high next year? If that is the case, it is INSANE and not worth the bike at all ! Since Ducatis big valve Desmoservices is almost 3 times as expensive as KTM/Husky I think 18 000 miles for their big service is much needed. My friend paid 1300$ for the big service on his Ducati 950 Supersport, I had a similar big service where they adjusted valves on my 690 that set me back 540$ That is one big + and another reason to skip Ducati bikes.
lol come to Vietnam and I'll show u the 15k+ USD SMC 690/ 701 Supermoto
Im 45, for context. Im not sure a gen z spending close to 14k$ out the door is exactly entry level on either model. Practicality is issue #2. These are street dirt bikes that are very uncomfortable on long rides. I know this as I have a ktm 300 converted to SM. It’s a second bike built for beat runs, my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I love them all!
My ktm superduke calls for a 15000km oil change which is about 9000mi interval...... i do every 5000km... or 3000mi. I agree its waaaaay to long.
I wonder if the user can easily reset service reminder lights on the Ducati or if it requires special software or a dealer visit… one of the main reasons I went with the 690 SMC R rather than the Ducati Hypermotard 950 or a Monster 950. I don’t feel intimidated working on my KTM. Plus, I still prefer the looks of the KTM and couldn’t be happier with my purchase!
That's an interesting question.. I have been watching all the jounalists review the Duc and it looks sweet.. like the "auto wheel control and backing in" stuff is insane and would be so nice on the KTM!
Being biased and making assumptions is a recipe for disaster.... however both motorcycles are very similar and I will pay more attention to where they are made and that means everything on them.
The oil change issue depends on the use and most important how many times the bike is flipped 😀
Your spot on with your assumption that the ducati will have issues as it will.. most ppl should know stay away from first year anything.
I think both Ducati and KTM get a bad rap on reliability. I have owned many KTM's and many recent Ducatis. I have not had a single issue with KTM or Ducati but the caveat for me is the newer Ducatis. Since they have VW money their R&D has become the best in the industry and their tech is also the best. I would not have owned a Ducati 10 years ago but today's Ducati is a different machine. Both KTM and Ducati bar none are the most fun to ride. That being said, either of these bikes would be a great choice but based on my 950 Hyper SP....do not discount this 698. It is basically half of the their GT motor which has proven to be very reliable. I am sure it may have some out of the gate tweaks necessary but I would not be concerned about the "1st year" bugs to the point where I would not buy one. 10 years ago, absolutely. Looking forward to the real world comparisons.
I agree, i also have a couple of new ducatis, plus KTM and BMW. In fact all the current bikes are so much better than even a few years back. The same with modern oils, sure you can top up, but the need for those super frequent changes are generally gone. The point you make about R&D is correct, now the massivie computing power engineers have and deep pockets, like BMW and Ducati that really do make a difference.
The Ducati is 22K AUD for the base model the exhaust system is 2K the KTM 690 is $13K big difference in cost

I can’t wait to see the head-to-head comparisons between the 701, 690 and the 698 Mono. I think Ducati nailed this one.
Coming from the Ducati guy.. hahahaha But it would be a good comparison!
I’m here for it🎉
The Ducati is a cool bike, but it's not a supermoto. Much like the original Duke 620, it's a supermoto inspired bike and for some, that's good enough. KTM figured out the secret sauce to build the perfect street, supermoto.
What are you talking about? The SMCR is as much or as little of a supermoto as the new Ducati will be?
Same weight Same Power Same Ergonomics
@ramonbostic there’s a reason they call it a “hyper”, you’re whining just to whine. Go ride a 250 if you want a real “super”moto
@paulwatson3479 dude people track 701 and 690s all the time, they jump them, stunt them all day long. Nobody's doing that on this dumb ducati. It's more of a mt07 competitor. Just a street bike they're trying to cash grab off the name.
@@phoenixproject9393 you are completely lost mate
@Rellek nah bud, comparing specs doesn't make bikes similar. Capability does. Using your logic modern entry level naked bikes could be supermotos. This bike can't handle the abuse. My 690 enduros been down technical single track, dropped on rocks, crashed repeatedly, and barely has scratches. This things getting trashed as soon as it hits the ground. Plus it has expensive ducati maintenance including desmo valve adjustments which either require special tools and learning it, or paying like 3000 for it to be done. It's just a smaller hypermotard
Just got KTM 690 2024,have problems for unlocking the bike dies off ! KTM customer service fix after 3 times I have to take to the dealer ship.
Say whaaa?? What in the heck.. I'm sorry to hear that! That shouldn't happen on a brand new bike! I'm glad they got it fixed for you
I will have to agree with you about oil changes. Oil is life for an engine, and it needs to be changed often. Especially if you ride/drive hard.
Just crazy to me how long they say to go.. that would give me anxiety!! And it's not like its 5-6 quarts of oil either..
One hundred percent agree with you 😉
I’ll probably end up waiting a year and getting the inevitable SP model with Ohlins suspension
Great video!
I’m ditching a 2019 hyper 950 for this little thumper.
The husky, gas gas and smc are the same bike.
Electronics package on the Ducati is unrivaled, let’s face it the reason we own factory sumo’s.

Wait a year, of real experiences, and comparisons, then make your decision. For sure KTM, Husqvarna, and GaGas(all same bikes) need to up their game. I expect fuel guage, quick shifter, up market (non barbeque) exhaust, gear indicator, wheelie/slide safety net, and reduced prices. KTM can do it through the Chinese, as they have done with the 790 adventure.
Problem for me with the KTM 690 its way too easy to steal (u just connect those two wires ignition together and push the start button), 2nd instrument cluster couldn't be any worse. If KTM could change those 2 things I would buy it. They should add those extra bits from 1390 also to SMC R. Maybe someone wakes up there one day...
You nailed it😏
děkuji za váš názor ....mám ten samý ktm 690 win🙂
So out of all the bikes in the world and all of the bikes I have owned (100+) The 3 brands that have permanently made it into my garage are KTM, Ducati and Harley. It is solely for the soul of the machines and the smile factor for their respective duties. I do own a 2022 1290 Super Duke Evo and a 2022 Hypermotard 950SP and I recently sold a 2017 Husky 701 Enduro. That being said, each brand has it's quirks. Out of all of the nakeds out there, nothing even comes close to the 1290SD Evo as a street naked, there are better on track but not on the road. The SD is as close to a perfect motorcycle that I have ever owned. Ducati is a different story for me. I currently own the Hyper along with a Pikes Peak and a Desert X. Every single Ducati I have owned has been a slow roll for me to bond with. I have never owned any other brand that out of the gate and before break-in is so unimpressive. Conversely, I have never owned a brand that once it breaks in is absolutely unsurpassable. My 3 Ducatis are life time keepers and I feel like the three I have are the best of the Ducati lineup. I think that the Street Fighters and the Pangales get all of the attention but they simply do not provide the fun factor on street like the others. In fact, I swapped bikes with a buddy on his V2 Street Fighter and he road my Hyper. He gave me endless crap for buying a Hyper thinking it was only a hooligan, wheelie machine.....until he rode it. As soon as we pulled over he asked me to sell it to him. The Hyper has way more torque, corners better, handles non track roads much better and is more comfortable. That being said, I love, love KTM but I am betting that 698 Hyper ends up as a more impressive machine that the SMC-R. The SMC-R is a converted dirt bike basically and the 698 is very purpose built Super Moto. I would be just fine with either but I suspect the 698 it will edge out the KTM but that remains to be seen and ridden.
I change oil every 1500 miles, 9000 miles is just unthinkable even with the most expensive synthetic oil D:
10000% agree like I get major servicing in 9k miles but oil?!? 🫠
The ktm dash pisses me off. My 2007 dash has much more info vs the newer models. The rest of the specs are close enough that I would buy the ducati over the ktm. Plus in my area the ducati dealer is way better service than ktm
I think if you want more power, go for Hypermotard 950, but you want a street supermoto, 690 is still the king.
Amen!! And more power, why not get a sport bike? or naked bike?? I would think a 890 Duke R or even like a Tuono V4 would be much better than the 950 Hyper.. or did I just start an argument?? hahah
@@LifeWellRidden Well, I was talking about "motard" world)
