Bittersweet as this is, it's such a romantic gesture from Tim. This man went out, bought a card, took it home, wrote in it, AND inked his dog's paw print into it. I've used those dog paw ink kits before - they take ages to get right. Remember in Season 2 when he was struggling to think of a gift for Rachael? No way would that Bradford have gone to this much trouble. This shows not only how much he's grown, but also just how much he loves Lucy.
Well Tim is torturing Lucy. And it’s sadistic to use the dog as she would have clearly preferred to receive a card from him with at least one full sentence written. A man in love doesn’t behave like that. They arranged the script so that a bit of suspense was created again but in reality it would not work like that

The lyrics in the song are so telling. When Lucy opens the card, the lyrics are saying "the troubles are only going to last for a while". Tim wanted to acknowledge Lucy's birthday, even if he felt it would be bad form to do it directly as himself, because he loves her so much. He wishes things were different though, indicated by his sad head shake after the dog comes back to him. Thank you for the upload. It is appreciated.

At first I kind of thought Tim just did this because Grey told him to make things right but when he shook his head at the end my heart broke again for both of them. Like from Season 1 we all see both character growing up a lot, but Tim have to many ghots from his past that he can't let go.
