  • I was hired as a scout for a commercial that wanted to shoot some new trucks in epic offroad locations. So i tried to take my stock Tacoma through the Rubicon to see if we could get a film crew in there. Turns out no!

The short answer is no, a stock Tacoma won't make it without legendary lines and luck. This area is the gatekeeper (namesake implied). There would have been plenty of progress after that, along with bypasses. Would be cool to see a website where they note their vehicle details including tire-size, heighth/lift, and obstacles surpassed. This was a cool video, glad there was no serious damage to the vehicle.

Nice job! Like the attitude. I've taken two rigs through this trail stock, open diff , on factory size tires. the only additions were rock sliders. Both rigs were 1960's Land Rovers on the stock 7.50-16 bias ply grave diggers. One was a short wheelbase, the other a long wheelbase pickup. The last time thru with the stock pickup was back in 2007, at the height of the pirates trashing the trail and it was tougher then than nowadays, Gate keeper was real !
It was a total blast, you really have to pick your lines (and throttle!) with open diffs. The right mindset is key. Neither rig broke, and only the pickup needed one tug the entire trail. A pair of rock sliders (and air down, dammit !!) and your Tacoma would do just fine. The rock sliders would allow you to pick better lines and use more throttle!

Its a wrangler trail. You need to go back to a regular cab Taco to pull this off. So what like 2005

Goddam, brave man! At least you knew when to call it quits. And this begs me to question, did a stock Rivian actually complete this trail like they claim? Seems hard to believe.

nope they have jeeps winch it all the way and just watch the "whole" clip...pure marketing bs.

Yeah I believe the rivians made it through. I saw them start and I think they had time and a little help but I think they did it

They only got all the way with the SUV as it's a bit better than the truck, and that was with significant breakages (I forget how many tie rods but several) and on-trail welding plus assistance from locals in Jeeps. I mean, kudos for them for trying and technically they did get through but I hope that doesn't give owners some false sense of capability.

I think we live in the same area. I also have a relativley stock Tacoma, but I don't have any experience wheeling.

A bit late here but YT only just served this up. I believe an experienced driver in the AEV or even ZR2 Colorado could readily make it to the bowl. The others...not so sure.
