I've heard Fungi are closer related to animals than plants. I assumed this was because of the oxygen/co2 exchange. Do you know if this is true? Is there something else that makes the kingdoms related or did I just hear an old wives' tale?

Yes very much. We shared ancient ancestors and share up up to 50% of our DNA with fungi. That’s why both fungal medicine and fungal diseases are so impactful to us.
