      Not really a backdoor pilot, as at the time, it was not intended to spin off. It spun off due to its popularity.

    I was an intern for one of the handful of independent studios Atoms had to approach to complete the pilot for Underfist. The studio refused to give him the resources to complete the special inhouse.
    It was a sad day when we found out it wasn't getting picked up, and that Atoms's contract had expired, but the writing was on the wall before he even approached us.

    I'm not sure, if the OWCA Files were supposed to be a backdoor pilot, but there was also another episode, that clearly was a backdoor pilot: Doof 101. This episode follows Doofenshmirtz as the science teacher of Vanessa's class. Of course things go wrong and Perry has to appear and save the day. The episode also had the flys from the OWCA Files in it's B-Plot, now that Perry and Doof are in the A-Plot replacing Phineas and Ferb. They even replaced Candace with a principal, who trys to bust Doofenshmirtz. Although i really like Milo Murphy's Law, Doof 101 would have been a great show.

    Okay, I'm older than most of your viewers, so I might know of a few backdoor pilots that go way back (not cartoons). The most famous one would be this:
    Love American Style had an episode called "Love and the Happy Days". That was a pilot for Happy Days. That lead to backdoor pilots on Happy Days for Mork and Mindy, Laverne and Shirley, Joanie Loves Chachi., Out of the Blue, and Blansky's Beauties.
    Another one is difficult to tell, as I know they are spin offs based on characters rather than true backdoor pilots, but this group of show are tightly connected:
    All in the Family lead to The Jeffersons, Archie Buncker's Place, and to Maude. Maude lead to Good Times. The Jeffersons lead to Checking In. Gloria and 704 Hauser were both straight up spin offs.
    Sorry those were sitcoms and not cartoons. I'm 46 and long past most cartoons (unless you count the Batman Animated series, Superman, Justice League Unlimited, and Batman Beyond's couple of failed backdoor pilots).

    The main reason why Crash Nebula wasn’t made into a cartoon was 1) the animation for the style it was going for would have been damn expensive and 2) in 2004 not only had DP been in development for years at that point (since 2001) but also he was still actively in the creative process. Giving him another show would have been three mainstream cartoons at the same time, and he was barely juggling two.
    Honestly, the fact he was trying to get another cartoon at the time when Nick execs literally just gave him his second cartoon because he had an idea for one/was interested in making another cartoon is kind of tacky.

    The Superhero Teen Drama: Smallville, had 4 backdoor pilots. It tried to set up a Batman prequel called:Wayne, an Aquaman series, a Legion of Superheroes show and the popularity of Green Arrow in the series made the exects decide to give him his own spin off, thus making the entire series a backdoor pilot for Green Arrow. However during development they decided to go with a total reboot for Green Arrow and that is how Arrow exists, also the Arrowverse is notorious for Backdoor Pilots.

    A classic example of a backdoor pilot is the original Star Trek episode "Assignment: Earth". The episode centred around the characters Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln, with the crew of the Enterprise being not much more than guest stars in their own show. The episode even ends with Captain Kirk telling Gary and Roberta that they looked up their history in the Enterprise computer, and discovered that the two would have a number of ineteresting adventures in their future.

    I definitely want to see more on backdoor pilots, this brought back many great memories. One thing I'm happy to see mentioned was Kenny & the Chimp, it seems like very few people can recall that. I remember seeing the short on Cartoon Network & at the time wasn't aware that Kids Next Door beat it out to get its own series but when that one guy appeared in KND, I was like, it's that guy! The scientist person with the diseases from the cartoon with the chimp! Man, I still can't believe how many years ago that was given when he was in KND, I thought it had been a long time since Kenny & the Chimp & was surprised to see any call backs at all to it but when you think about it, Cartoon Network always had a somewhat open door feeling to it like you wouldn't be surprised to see Major Glory in something that wasn't Dexter's Lab & so on because the shows just somewhat all felt like they could interact with one another. I don't know if it's the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays or something more recent like Fusion Fall that brings this on. Geez, I called Fusion Fall recent, it still feels that way to me even though it's been closed down for probably years. Even to this day, Cartoon Network keeps that divide open between its shows like Uncle Grandpa being in Steven Universe & having a list of other Cartoon Network stuff to go see. Cartoon Network is probably filled with backdoor pilots that many of us probably didn't even notice seeing how a lot of their shows sometimes blend.
    As a huge Phineas & Ferb fan, I'm happy that the OWCA Files didn't create a spinoff, I was actually fine with letting the series end when it did. Years prior to it ending, I had been saying that Phineas & Ferb will do something special for its final episode, they will know it's the end somehow & it will be great so I was hoping that it would end when it's ready so that there wouldn't be any beating of a dead horse (sorry Agent H) & it sure enough did have a nice send off. Keep in mind, I love this series, I have a whole collection of Perry the Platypus plushies, about seven of them to be exact so obviously I would be fine having a Perry based spinoff series but it just wouldn't even be half as good as the original series, probably because it's missing half the series. The whole thing was said & done, the OWCA Files was a fun thing to watch but I see that more like a dessert, no need for seconds on that.
    How do I feel on Milo Murphy's Law? Love it. I actually cosplayed as Milo & my friend as Diogee, we met Weird Al in our costumes & he took our picture to send to Dan & Swampy, yeah, I'm not kidding, Weird Al took my picture. Obviously, I adore this series & feel like it's so much better than a Phineas & Ferb spinoff could be. It was known to be set in the same universe as P&F of which I'm cool with, actually the whole thing centering around Professor Time is real awesome & I will not spoil that cliffhanger but oh my gosh, I can not wait for them to continue off of that. When I met Weird Al, the latest episode was the special, Missing Milo & I talked to him about that. He was actually pretty open & didn't try hiding much, he said that it will be resolved in 2018 when season 2 comes out so I guess that's why there hasn't been any new episodes since the Christmas one, we're waiting on the second season.
    I feel so out of the loop really, when P&F was airing, I was apart of a forum for the show so I always knew what was going on & never missed a new episode but now for Milo Murphy's Law, it's weird how it's harder to stay updated with this sort of stuff. My guess being that 2008 is a totally different world than 2018 when it comes to internet culture, odd how things can change in ten years. It was easier finding this news since they didn't try hiding it as much, finding what you wanted to know was easy & of course they did become aware of this. Any P&F fans who were just watching casually might be confused about the oddity that is Tip of the Day, that my friends would be a troll episode. They knew about our activity, trying to find information online for every little thing on new episodes so they kept everything they possibly could about that episode hidden from us until it aired, all we got was a title drop which lead to so many speculations on what it would be about. Some of us even emailed Dan & Swampy, got a reply saying we'll just have to wait & see. Nobody, & I mean nobody guessed tip of a shoelace. Yeah, it felt like the first time you ever get Rick Rolled, although I have no idea if anyone's first time was as epic as my first time getting Rick Rolled but it's like that. They knew what they were dealing with at that point, they got smart, & they decided to toy with us.
    News on Milo Murphy's Law isn't that hard to track down but I still feel more out of touch with it, probably because I'm not on a forum for the show & being apart of an online community helps to make you feel more involved with it in general. Weird Al was very open spewing details on the series so clearly it's not hidden, I'm just not informed like I use to be.
    Sorry, kinda went off there but anything to pull me back into the days of P&F always causes this. Anyways, I definitely want to hear more about backdoor sequels, some might surprise me seeing as I might of not realized it was one before watching the video & I look forward to that possibility.

    Since backdoor pilots of shows that aren’t cartoons are allowed, Married... With Children actually had three different episodes that were back door pilots that were supposed to start spin-offs. The episodes Radio Free Trumaine, Enemies, and Top of the Heap were all episodes used as back door pilots for spin offs. Top of the Heap starring Matt LeBlanc before he hit it big in friends, was the only show out of those pilots to get a show even though the series only lasted seven episodes.

  • @Biotear
    @Biotear Před 6 lety +3

    Can't confirm this yet since it remains to be seen, but Dragonball Super might be teasing a spinoff already in several ways. Since Pan was born in between the first two arcs, and Bulla was born during the beginning of the ToP arc, with Dende mention Uub to Goku a few episodes later, one possible spin off might be a follow up to Super after it ends, one that's a side story where Goku and Vegeta are nearing the end of their lives and since Gohan became a scholar and Goten and Trunks are already established to fight because it's fun and be too carefree to take even universal threats seriously enough to properly deal with them, having Goku train both Uub AND Pan while Vegeta trains Bulla so someone can carry on the legacy of the Prince of all Saiyans after his death. Then we get a fun spin-off where Uub, Pan, and Bulla have completed their training and start off on their own journey, original Dragonball style. More likely however would probably be a spinoff set in Universe 11 (Home of the Pride Troopers) that is a bit like the Jaco Galactic Patroller manga but instead of being like a Dragonball Universe Green Lantern Corps. It's more about the Pride Troopers being the obvious Avengers/Justice League like group they are. Either that or Universe 6 during the events of DBZ. Getting to see Frost, Cabba, Caulifla, Kale, Hit, ect and what they were up to while the events of DBZ occurred in Universe 7 would be cool.

    Not a cartoon, but I have to say the backdoor pilot they did for the Supernatural spin off was the worst b.d.p. I have ever seen. It was like a true blood/teen wolf mashup in hopes to jump on the bandwagon, which failed miserably.

    Ah, so that's the term for this little tactic. I recall "Bones" had an episode that later spawned the short-lived series "The Finder". And I think "Married...with Children" had two backdoor pilot episodes. One was about Al's friend and said friend's son (played by Matt LeBlanc of "Friends" fame), and another focused on three completely different characters, one of whom was friends with Kelly (I'm guessing on that second one...had a very "we're trying to launch a new show" feel to it).
    For animation...there was an episode of "Animaniacs" where Slappy Squirrel was sent to a nursing home for aging cartoon characters, which *I think* was supposed to spin-off into a Slappy series, much like Pinky and the Brain years before. But it didn't happen, if that was their intent.

    Nobody knows about Kenny and the Chimp but you have no idea how much I loved that stupid short as a kid! I have it recorded on a VHS and I can quote almost the whole thing. It's nothing compared to KND(one of my favorite cartoons of all time)but it holds a special place in my heart.

    You could do a whole episode on the backdoor pilots of Diff'rent Strokes and Facts of Life. They did a LOT. And a good handful of the ones for Facts of Life were pretty decent concepts but never got off the ground.

    So, I'm not sure if this was acctually a back door pilot or not, but it cirtantly felt like one. The Doctor Who episode "Blink" was a great episode that featured the doctor for about all of 5 minutes and focused on the story of 2 characters who we hadent seen before and haven't seen since, had a new villain (which is the only thing to be carried over from this) and all around felt very different from the usual show, but was still one of the best episodes of the series.

    • @drakkenmensch
      @drakkenmensch Před 6 lety

      Not so much a backdoor pilot as a "Doctor Light" episode as they were filming TWO episodes at once that week and they could only afford enough David Tennant for the DVD segments and the closing sequence of the episode where the closed time loop gets established. It's the kind of filming schedule bullshit that also gave us "Love and Monsters"
