One of the very very few drummers that Buddy Rich admired! Carl is a legend!
Not the full, and true story.
No he is a Brummie haha
Carl's ability to accelerate his rolls in short bursts has always been super impressive.
I've listened to Carl my whole adult life, met him a few times, and really know his stuff, technique, etc. He is the only drummer I have ever heard who is better at age 60 than when he was in his 20s and 30s. That's really hard when drumming is so physical. He's not just an inspiration as a drummer--he is an inspiration as a person. I love the guy.
You need to listen to some of buddy riches solos, he played a lot faster than Carl and he was 67 years old then , but I do agree, not many drummers can play as fast as Carl can at 60 😊👍
Bruford was better in his 60’s as well.
Amazing!!! One of the best solo's I have seen. He's still got it, even at 64, wow!
King Carl
The master. Saw him last year. He STILL has it. Amazing. Best living drummer.
Carl has mentioned the amount of physical exertion it has taken on all of ELP members....Excellent group !!!
For cryin' out loud. Who could criticize this drum solo. For sure, there are many other great drummers who have played fantastic solos. But this is an amazing fucking solo, regardless of age. If it was a 20 year old it would still be great. There are things in this solo that are unreal. Just fucking enjoy it.
The guy is a machine..
Probably an endoskeleton under living tissue too boot, T-800 style.
40 yrs later and still my fav-0-rite drummer..
ONCE MORE ANOTHER INSANE SOLO, STICK WORKING IS ALWAYS OFF THE HOOK FOR CARL. GOOD BLESS HIM FOR SHOWING US DRUMMERS THE WAY TO PERFECTION.. COMMANDING THAT LUDWIG KIT TO THE MAX. PEACE TO ALL DRUMMERS
That Palmer can still play this fast and this hard at 64 means that his technique (maybe not his tempo) has to be absolutely spot-on. All drummers should take notes.
Him and Bill Bruford are my favorites
he turned 63 one month before this concert, still hasn't slow down after all these years, great!
you should have seen him at California jam
In the mid 70s, ELP played a very agressive, live version of Tarkus. Tarkus is a song that off the studio album I never liked. The live album "Welcome Back my friends......." caught this mid 70s performance of Tarkus and it's a BEAST of a song. I would say there are no three humans that you could put together who could do what they did. Carl Palmer is hitting and sustaining speeds of around 500 bpm on the hi-hat, with one hand, and in the middle of the song where Keith is playing that weird hand held synth and he's creating a very loud and once again very aggressive sounds with that device, Carl is going around the drum kit, close to 1000 bpm. Because of how loud the synth is during that part, it's hard to hear what Carl is doing. I wish the audio team would have captured that whole concert better, because when I think of "Greatest Show, in heaven hell and Earth", I think of that version of Tarkus. The drumming is amazing, the keyboard playing is out of this world, and Greg's vocals and very melodic guitar solos along with his bass playing are all just amazing.
@@johndoh5182 I agree I always try to convince my friends at the live version was much better
OMG!!! Are you freaking KIDDING ME!!!! This kicks soooo much ass!
an auditional thunderstorm with absolutely no limit!
FANTASTIC ...
Carl...only you remain from ELP...you are "something special"...your mentor Buddy Rich thought the same. We love you...teach these young drummers "how it's supposed to be done."
Saw ELP at Moby Gym in 1977 I think , he's still got it !!
Damn. He's a beast on the snare!! I honestly had no idea he was that good. He's fucking amazing!!!
Big-time Buddy Rich influence.
100%...and Rich said he was the best he'd seen of the new drummers
Buddy said Carl was a "bitch"...meaning...from Buddy...you were a "complete percussionist."
What do you mean, man...he's a beast on "all his drums." Plenty of videos of Carl here on YT...check them out.
Yes he is one of the greatest for years!
Doesn't even break a sweat. Just keeps getting better.
The man is absolutely GREAT!!!!!
This gives me chills and wears me out just watching it. Good grief!
True Genius, percussionist. The modern hardhitters can still take lessons from Carl Palmer.
That left hand speed is immaculate
One of my favorite drummers, Carl Palmer! Kieth Emerson-RIP, will surely be missed!
Craig Feist - Dont leave out Greg Lake. One of rocks nice guys, not to mention best singers. He was still alive when you commented, so RIP Greg. You are highly remembered.
David Dawson ...Greg lakes bass lines...amazingly off-hand..but VERY complex
One of the most comprehensive solos Ive ever seen. Bring it ON Carl.
One of the Greatest and STILL doesn't get enough Love . 🥁
One of the greats! The showmanship, chops, and ingenuity!
Amazing! Best drummer of all time!
A great master of the drums - at 64 still powering away - wonderful!!!
I'm sat watching this on a laptop yet I still want to stand up and cheer him on.
I'm a metal drummer of 40 years...... and I still bow to Mr. Palmer...
35 years behind the kit. I watch this guy and just want to quit. Absolutely sick drumming here! No other way to put it. Whomever posted this - thank you!
Tanks for sharing.
Floats like a butterfly but stings like a bee I am Carl Palmer. Awesome solo!!!!
Epic drum solo with sustained intensity and then bits of humor thrown in. Not many can pull that off. Legend.
One of the best concerts on tour!
This is like spontaneous combustion! He's still got it...as good as ever!
Great quality video and sound!
WOW... he is an awesome drummer and quite entertaining... amazing cymbal work.. he may still be my FAVORITE drummer EVER....
saw this legendary drummer in March 2018 and have to watch him every day now! I was literally 5 feet in front of him and was in total awe the whole 1 1/2 hours!!! He is absolutely incredible...drums with such passion and energy -- like that of a man half his age (he had just turned 68 the week before!) -- and he smiles often while playing!!! He's the BEST!!!
MOVED TO TEARS EVERYTIME I hear and watch Carl Palmer. This has been happening to me since 1980. What a life-long spiritual friend, thank you Carl.
Wow ! Carl has been woodshedding . Thanks for posting .
I have never truly enjoyed Carl Palmer's work- great technician, but little dynamic or restraint.
Or so was my impression before watching this gem of a performance!
What a wonderfully engaging chopsfest this is! Great show Mr. Palmer, you may have finally won me over! Lot of Buddy Rich Charisma in here!
With ELP, he HAD to be among the most versatile of percussionists. Their material, between Keith's speed keyboard, Keith's constrained keyboard, and Greg's ballads, needed every style of drumming imaginable.
Just sayin'
this man is awesome he is one true musician I well never forget excellent
amazing
I’m a huge fan of Paice and Bonham but Palmer stands alone or rather sits alone , absolutely incredible 👌🏻
Not only one of history's finest drummers but a master showman as well
BRAVO!!! Super!
Saw this show! Blew my eff'n mind!! Seeing him again at Arcada in 2 nights! Can't wait!
No-one grooves like Jeff Porcaro, no-one composes around the kit like Simon Phillips, no-one rocks like Alex Van Halen... but for sheer onslaught & the best wrists in the business there's only one Carl Palmer
***** Just checked him out. Of course he's brilliant, at that level you have to be. Though imho no-one smokes Simon Phillips, best footwork in the business (and interplay with toms)... by a country mile :-)
the reason why I Love this amazing drummer so much is because he has a way of working his way around his drum kit. Superb !!
Mind boggling
An Inspiration for any young drummers out there!
Holy Moly...incredible!!!!!
+Audrey Russo You have a genuine smile...Keep it up!
Always was and still is amazing. Saw this show last night here in Pennsylvania at the Sellersville Theater and just fantastic. He plays like a teenager. Great to see that he has kept in shape. There are not too many Legends around anymore especially those that can still play what they are known for. If you get a chance catch one of these show before it's too late.
Ten minutes of pure brilliance!
How is this man still so awesome? I saw ELP on the Black Moon Tour 1992-1993. Simply phenomenal.
Got to see & meet Carl on this tour last year. Absolutely gave me chills watching him again. So glad he's doing this ELP Legacy tour and hope to catch him again soon.
Carl Palmer you are a legend
Carl palmer is a true musician, his timing, speed, and technique is awesome, new drummers can learn a lot from a true drummer ,musician the one and only Carl palmer!!!!
the best drummer EVER !!!!!!!
Yep!
After Buddy Rich.
Still my favorite drummer of all time !!!😎
There is Carl Palmer and Neil Peart. Then there is everybody else. Without a doubt the 2 greatest ever.
Wow, chops and the soul of an olympian at 64. Well done Carl.
When asked by Johnny Carson one night do you have any favorite bands currently in today's music business, he said his favorite band was ELP..he said he would go see them whenever they were in town.He said that Carl Palmer was a fantastic drummer. This video is a testimony to that and Carl.Palmer might be 69 70 years old.He hasn't lost his fiery, timing..Great video .
Took Pictures of this in Montreal, it was a magical night.
A True Master, First Time I Saw Him Live Was At Cal Jam, Iv'e Seen Him Several Times Since Over The Years And Everytime Is Like The First.. Just Mind Blowing.
WITH ELP, DEEP PURLE, ET AL
1st saw Carl with ELP when I was 15. That was 43 yrs ago. Yes, he keeps on getting better!
Carl Palmer and Jon Hiseman are two of my favourite drummers
Hiseman is a Monster Drummer!
Freaking awesome!!!!!! The most creative drummer i;ve ever seen!!!!!
I got my dose of Carl Palmer today and what an exhibition it was...
He was kicking ass before 20. Started at 16 with Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds, 18 he was with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, 19 with Atomic Rooster, then joining ELP.
After listening to this and a few live performances of his solo in Karn Evil 9 he did with ELP, his sound is much more solid now. He has handled his maturity very well.... what an awesome talent.
Man o man. Palmer is still the best.
Always, has this man taken such wonderful care of himself, and his craft. He could have easily let himself slide and not been as great as this. But the _self discipline_ Carl has always had shows clearly at almost seventy. What a wonder to watch! Koodoos Carl for being so damn good to yourself. XD
God, almighty! I hate claiming anybody is the best as music is so subjective, but I think we can all agree that Carl is in the top five of the best rock drummers of all time. Just amazing.
No, and statistically, your comment is just as ridiculous as the other type. Maybe h works against you..... and Carl.
His tempo is horrible.
He overplays.
He plays like a high school band drummer on cocaine.
His ego is slightly off
He has the stamina of a lion
And fit ELP in its place in history. I watched him from behind, and on stage several
times. He was inspeitational ..but that best list and the numbers and criteria .. no way.
Carl Palmer's solo, playing Ginastera's "Toccata" is an experience I will never forget. .Superb.
May not be the fastest, But Carl is the best. No one can polish their whole kit while playing. No One but him.
Carl Palmer has always been one of the Best his Hands are Smoking and that’s one of the Best Cymbal Solos as well
Wow this is astanding I really admire Carl Palmer thank you for posting has brought me to tears of joy.
One of my old time favorites since the 70's. Thank you for sharing!
unquestionably the best rock drummer of all time..
Certainly questionable. Bill Bruford. Neil Peart. Stewart Copeland. Terry Bozzio.
Now, certainly one of the best of several who could all be chosen based on personal tastes.
Keith moon is the best period .
No one is The Best.... that's why they call it art!!!!! But I'm sure he is to you.... and that is a good place to draw inspiration from...
@@tross1612
No such thing as the best!...
What about Ringo Star
Terrific ! We saw Carl (and friends) last July. His performance and exciting persona are a joy to experience.
Beyond awesome humming bird fast snare rolls, tricky stick flips.
I didn't know he was drum wizard gr8.
The Man is awesome, a machine!! Well done Carl Palmer, still going strong, LOVE & Peace to All!!💗✌
he even makes a cymbal solo exciting
Thank You for this. Carl (and EL) are awesome. The passing of Keith is a very sad day for many. He will be missed.
This guy kicks major ass!
great drummer, under rated and not talked about enough.
It is a magic
I still wish that Keith & Greg were still playing alongside him. What those three had was magic.Sadly, fate had something else in mind.Keep the fire burning Carl. You are the sole heir of ELP's legacy.ELP forever.
Carl Palmer and Buddy Rich were friends since Palmer was a teenager.
Palmer learned a lot from the master and Rich had great respect for Palmer.
comx427:Which is remarkable because Buddy Rich was critical of a lot of drummers most of us would consider to be quite good.To be respected by Buddy Rich is a testimony to your greatness. But then when you look at Carl Palmer,it is respect most deserved. This man was born for the drums.
Amazing! Saw him with Asia in 1983 in Portland, ME. That's when he had the double bass stainless Premier kit with the timpani in back with Simmons drums shaped like a man's head. He was incredible then and even better now! Absolutely blazing speed, technique and musicality. A titan behind the skins!
Oh my God, It seems the en of the World ....!!!! Extrordinaire!!!
you know anyone can bang on a drum for ten minutes...but to make it sound cohesive takes pure raw talent he is a master..no if ands or buts
Absolutely incredible nobody drums like Carl palmer
You rock my socks off Carl!
unreal!!!!!!!!!!! Pure excellence
Jaw dropping performance. He always brings it. Love you, Carl.
Carl is better than ever, and that is saying something! ELP and Asia were huge for me as a kid. Grooving shit.
What a entertainer, he was always about that.
That's why he's Carl Palmer! Amazing musician/performer. He give's his all. It's more than enough.
I don't care what people say about other drummers. You can judge them different ways. Carl Palmer has been making 5 minute drum solos since the mid 1970s, and I listen intently to them every time I hear them. He is the ONLY drummer that does this to me, so regardless of style or any other way a person might judge a drummer, to me he is no. 1 at the drum solo, and has been for 50 years.
One of the great regrets of my life that I never saw ELP live!
Mine, too! But I was fortunate enough to see Carl & ELP Legacy band in March 2018 and OMGosh...he is SOOOO amazing!!! He had just turned 68 the week before but hasn't slowed down...still plays his heart out & with such incredible energy and speed!!! He's the BEST! And his 2 guitarists are incredible, too.
Sorry you missed out, guys,I saw them 3 times & it was always a thrill.Nevertheless,Carl is still killing it so if you get a chance, check him out. He'll give you a taste of ELP magic.
Me either
Missed seeing a great band.
RIP Keith and Greg
I saw them 3 times, ELP great prog band!!!!
