Regarding your question about the lengths of Indian movies, there is an explanation/theory/story. This is what my grandma told me...Back in the olden days, like 50s and 60s, India used to have something called Touring Talkies. A big van with all the theatre equipment used to go from village to village to screen the latest movie. They would tie a white cloth between two poles in an open ground and charge 2 paisa per person (paisa is to rupee what penny is to dollar, like a rough estimate). Screenings were only at night and people would be seated on either side. People used to think that the actors playing the characters were actually that in real life and there would be almost no bargaining with them over the length of the songs. A song must be atleast 7-8 mins long and there should be 8-10 songs in total. The reason behind this is, if the movie was 4-5 hours long, they can escape reality for that much time and nobody knew when the Touring Talkies would again come to their village. That concept of escapism still exists with indian audiences and trust me, ive watched 5 and half hours movies from the black n white era. 3 hours is pretty concise compared to that.

3 Idiots was a Huge Hit in all of Asia including the Middle East ( I know Middle East is Asia too ) it even found it’s way to Latin Countries where it was officially remade with a Spanish Cast and called “ 3 Idiotas ”. Education Boards in Japan , South Korea , Taiwan and Philippines Recommended all Schools and Universities to have a screening of 3 idiots.

Historically, in india, movies were always supposed to be family outings to the theaters. So, going out for 3-4 hours was the expected norm.
I think that is the reason that indian movies are so long.

It is a revenge Biopic on the longer side with no song-dance but it is a really good movie one of my favourite Bollywood movie.

Movies in India are generally long with runtime around 150-180 min. Indians like movies and watching movies is considered as a family activity hence its long and most of the movies has blend of genres (comedy, drama, romance etc) called as masala movies (masala means spices indicaticating a touch of various ingrediants). Since watching movies is like an event for a family where family makes movie plan in advance for the weekend hence they are made long, and they are blended genres for enhancing community viewing plus indian movies work on emotions rather than logic. Its the emotions that carries the movie rather than smart or intelligent which also says why mix of the genres.
