    You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice czcams.com/users/postUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

    Tips. Use a cheap 7-1/4 circular saw plywood blade (i.e. no carbide teeth) for a source of hardened and tempered steel with a narrower kerf than the typical carbide tipped saw blade. This steel is very rigid. You can cut this up using the saw and an abrasive metal cutting blade. I used an old Oldham plywood blade to make several hybrid splitters/riving knives of different heights for my ancient but excellent Magna 10". They mount on the trunion block and will tilt with the blade but won't elevate. Also taper the leading edges of these splitter/knives with a grinding stone so the work piece doesn't catch on a sharp corner.

    Michael, brilliant!
    I just made a splitter for my Unisaw out of an old saw blade. Now I will be making a riving knife for my contractor’s saw. But, I haven’t enough remnant saw blade left and I had dug through my scrap metal and found nothing beefy and rigid enough. So I was eyeballing old pots and pans…
    When you held up that grill spatula, there it was! There’s the size and kind of steel I need.
    Thanks for the idea. 👍🏼

    🤔now that's a great idea I was going to cut down the old one but was not happy about cutting the triton bench one just in case I might need it again for the old bench 😳 but now I can make me own one thanks for the great idea have to pick up one next time I am in Bunnings 😹😹

    if you make a riving knife you measure the thickness of the blade plus the thickness of the teeth divide that by 2 that should be the thickness of you riving knife and keep an overall distance to the sawblade between 5 and 8 millimeter, what you made is a splitter and not a real riving knife,a riving knife is partially over the cutting blade so it prevents a trow back better than a splitter.

    • @VitaliySunny
      @VitaliySunny Před 7 lety +1

      Why need divide thickness of teeth by 2? Riving knife can be same thickness?

    • @muzikkify
      @muzikkify Před 6 lety +4

      Riving knife should be a bit thinner than the thickness of the teeth but thicker than thickness of the blade. You sum these two thicknesses and divide them by 2, then you get the optimal thickness.

    Brilliant work! For safety just just put a guard over the blade, which is easy! In reality the commercial guards on table saws a not that good. They shatter when you fall on them. Nothing is really safe. You just have to use common sense. The table saw i just made clamps the wood down and the saw runs on a track from the top, but that is to cut ply wood and mdf. I built this table saw to cut large sheets of ply wood down to manage able sizes. Please note that the table saw i just built isn't designed for natural woods, but for man made panels like mdf and ply. The problem with a normal table saw is one of the sides must be perfectly straight or you will get kick back! Also this design cuts all most perfectly straight and the non of the sides have to be straight! Thank you for your brilliant video!!!!!

    Very cool since it has this micro adjustment. But sometimes you need the splitter below the blade height in order to make covered cuts [dados, groves the like]

    I've used a variety of tablesaws over the last 30yrs ranging from sub $100 cheapo to an industrial table that costs more than my car, but I'll admit having watched this video I see little benefit from this. It's not really a riving knife. But thanks for sharing and taking time to make such a professional quality video.

      Luis Castellon Maybe not. Only L brackets I can source are 1mm or 2mm thickness. Neither suitable for my blade which leaves a kerf of 2mm. On the other hand bbq tool blade just a tad over 1.6 mm. Perfect. Cheers.

  • @ArcanePath360
    @ArcanePath360 Před 7 lety

    Your blade is way too high if you don't want kickback. Should only be a half tooth above the height of the stock. Also your push stick should have more surface area to push down with. It looks dangerous even with the splitter.

    Hi Michael I am diy fanatic. While getting ready for doing a 3 in 1 Workbench using someone else's plans, noted that they did not have any protection - no riving knife no splitters, nothing. I must have watched a zillion tutorials on the subject and this video is, I think, [the] only one that addresses the issue. Kudos and thanks to you. The only problem I had with your video [constructive criticism] is I had a hell of a time trying to figure out what the hell you were using as your splitter. I must have watched your video 10 times and still could not figure it out. By chance, I decided to read the comments to your video and thank God, someone mentioned that it was a "hamburguer / bbq spatula". Never would have guessed. Suggestion my friend, I do some CZcams tutorial videos, I would politely suggest you do a better job in having titles, captions or some kind of notes on the tools you use as well as your step-by-step guide. This silent presentation leaves many voids. Otherwise, good job on the project. Thanks.

      @vitmojzis4324 Před 2 měsíci

      @@tomopazo7887 It's not. You can easily adjust the blade height of the circular saw (and you really want to do that to get clean cuts). The only problem is the fixed position of the riving knife.
