  • We just picked up this beautiful Smith and Wesson 2.0 Metal Spec Compensated 9mm, and we were THRILLED to get it to the range....that was until the first shot was fired. It was all down hill from there. We think we have the remedy for what is ailing this pistol, but only time and Smith and Wesson will tell if it will be applied.

I own the metal competitor and put the faxon comp on it. I followed the instructions and used the red loctite, took it out to the range and the screws backed out. Then I realized that red loctite is only removable when heat is applied. So I replaced the red with blue and have had zero issues. Also 124 or 148 grain weight works better for cycling a handgun with a comp.

Had some similar issues with first range trip. Like most folks with a new toy, you head straight to the range. Last mag of prolly 100 rounds and had same issues I’m seeing here with the set screws backing out and the comp spinning. Got home and took a deep dive into the case and find the Faxon bag for the comp with the Vibra-tite (not regular ole red Locktite) unopened and the Allen wrench for the set screws. Found that to be a little off as customarily, when you buy a comped pistol the comp (usually made by the pistol manufacturer) comes factory installed, ready out of the box -not separately in a bag with comp installation instructions. -nor does the manual cover this install for this version. Anyhow, I soon realized that S&W does not install the comp at the factory. Like the thread protector, and the suppressor heights sites, the comp appears to be a provided option to the owner. -thus “here’s the comp if you want it and instructions/tools for the install” if you want to go that route. -all without saying it’s literally just sitting on there now for looks in the case. I followed the install directions and no problems since. The Vibra-tite is serious shit in about 2 min as I waited a smidge too long to time the comp with the set screws and had to back it off with a pair of channel locks! As the directions indicate, the set screws are not meant to hold the comp on/in place. The Vibra-tite does that. The set screws are used for timing placement only. I would not use the Vibra-tite on the set screws and the directions say not to. I used a little dab of purple Locktite on them and am in 500 with no issues. I agree sloppy execution by S&W. Not sure I could get the comp off and install a can if I wanted to……

Just picked mine up the other day. Had your exact same issue. Actually lost one of my set screws because i didnt realize it was spinning until i got home. Put that vibra tight on it and luckily i had aligned my comp already before i set it down to get the set screw blue loctited and ready to go and i picked the gun back up just to realize the comp would no longer move 😂😂 perfectly aligned and set in place. Put the set screw in and ran 100 through it with no issues. Gonna run 300-500 more before I’m satisfied but i think it’s good to go. I had a few stove pipes on the first range trip too straight out the box then realized the feed ramp was dry as shit. Lubed the hell out of it and hasn’t had a malfunction since.

I purchased this gun 1 month ago, took it to the range that weekend. Tan one 17 round magazine thru it and it stopped. Tried it without the compensator, nothing, tried it with just one round in the chamber, nothing. The trigger would not reset. Sent it off to S&W. They received it on 2/6. I emailed them after 2 weeks. They said they did have it and it was with the technicians but they didn’t know the status. They will email me when they ship it back. It’s been 3 weeks since they received it. With FFL fees and shipping, I spent just over $1,000 on this gun and haven’t seen it for 3 weeks. But hey, Ive got a really cool challenge coin to show off!

I got this one Feb 28. It was the most expensive gun that I have. Unfortunately, I had the same problems of the brass not ejecting every 3rd round. I called S&W and the 1st rep sent me another spring and recommended 125 grain. So I went back to the range with 124 gr and the original spring and same problem. So I called S&W again and the 2nd rep said he never heard of this problem and recommended 300-500 rounds w/o comp to break in or I could send the gun to S&W for them to check. I chose to shoot the 300-500 rounds w/o the comp. It worked flawlessly w/o the comp with 115 & 124 grain (Blazer, Norma, Winchester & Federal). So now I'm around 600 rounds. I'll try 100-150 more and reinstall the comp and see what happens. It shoots accurately at 7.5yds & 15 yds w/o comp. By the way the comp did not move for the first 50 rounds.

Great review I have the Bull shark and got a comp from for it. I have the same issues. The long reset messes with my timing with speed shooting and the comp I'll have to try again to mount. It came lose even after I used the locktie and set screws. Really disappointed and was so excited to get this one. There is no way I would carry it's too inconsistent right now.

I think the more people that buy this gun, the more people are going to recognize these issues. Right now there's a lot of people making excuses instead of figuring out solutions. @Range-Report the comp I got for my pdp mounted with no screws no problem. I agree with you. I think it's a configuration issue of how they designed it to connect. They should have taken more time on it if they were making it a flagship pistol. I'm looking forward to the TTI combat and their comp system.

I just bought one yesterday. I love the look and feel of it, it will make a great paper weight. Cause it wont shoot more than 1-3 rounds in a row before it either stove pipes or I get a FTF. I went through 4 to 5 mags and almost every time I shot it I was having to drop the mag and clear it. I didn't have the same issue as you with my comp being crooked I had to use a wrench to get my comp off. I will try it tomorrow with out the comp and see if I still have the same issue. If it does I am going to be pretty upset and probably spend the rest of my life to cause as many loss of sales as possible. I don't make a lot of money, and I like to buy nice stuff and I thought this would be a nice added feature to my small collection. I worked a lot of OT just so I could buy this thing. Maybe if they stopped adding a Shit I Dont NEED, they could spend more money on testing and evaluation of their products. This is the first S&W 2.0 I've bought. All I can say is I am thoroughly unimpressed.

@@Emilianoo8 at first, we used a ton of loctite and torqued the set screws down hard, and it worked fine. I just hated the idea of needing to do that every time if I wanted to swap on a can. So I had the barrel dimpled where the set screws go. That little bit of positive engagement worked perfectly. I still need an Allen key to remove the comp, but at least I'm not fighting the loctite and risking stripping them out. I still think S&W should employ this fix.

I bought the same gun, haven't ran into a problem of the gun not cycling/not functioning... yet. When I first got the gun I took the comp off and followed the procedure described in the video Faxon made for installation instructions. I ran around 243 rounds on the first range trip, 115 gr FMJ and some 115 gr. JHP. The last round fired I felt a noticeable difference in the recoil impulse. I found the passenger side set screw had back out completely and the driver side was out almost to the point of disappearing. This caused some marring on the comp and barrel. I was unable to find the set screw among the pile of brass at the range. I guess I will be contacting Faxon and Smith and Wesson on possible replacement. I plan on asking if maybe applying low strength loctite to the set screws might be a possible solution.

I think it's going to be a bit of a trade-off proposition for you. On one hand, the competitor is a good looking gun with very nice lightening cute. It looks like it MAY have a lower bore axis, but I cannot be sure without one in hand. It's certainly shorter over-all, but that's because you're losing some options. There's no compensator, or threaded barrel, so you won't be able to run a can. The Metal Comp has a threaded barrel, bushing, compensator, palm swells and 4 mags (2 are 22 round). The rub for me is that I had a LOT of problems with the compensator twisting and locking up the slide. Also, it needs 147 grains to run with the comp. The Competitor looks to be able to run everything. I think your best option is to take them both for a test drive and ask yourself what exactly you're going to use it for, and be honest with yourself. Me...after getting the kinds worked out, the Metal Comp is running amazingly....and it came with a Challenge Coin! (that's a bit of a running joke). Please let me know what you wind up doing, I'd love to know.
