  • Altan Brings Traditional Irish Music to FOX 5 in Time for Saint Patrick's Day.
Popular Irish folk group Altan stopped by the FOX 5 News studio to talk about their US tour and why they are so passionate about Ireland's musical culture, and to give us a special performance. The band are from County Donegal in northwest corner of Ireland and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is the lead singer. She performs a song that her father wrote about their hometown of Gaoth Dobhair.

Yes. It's common for Irish songs to share the same melodies.

The key is way too high for me. I much prefer Paul Brady's version.

Gleanntáin Ghlas Ghaoth Dobhair is not, though the air are similar to Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore, which definitive belongs of course to Paul Brady. I don't think Mairead NiMhaonaigh has Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore in mind when she is singing her father's song.
