- 1000cc Sport Utility SXS Shootout, RMAX 1000 vs Commander 1000R vs General XP 1000, . With three new models released in the past three years, the 1000cc sport utility segment is the hottest in SXSs today. All are hard workers and capable performers on the trail, yet this class is hardly a clone war. Although they’re all 64” wide with 1000cc class engines, each of these machines provide a unique approach and experience that its manufacturer believes delivers the ultimate do-it-all SXS, providing three very good, yet distinctly different, machines.
With the Can-Am Commander released mid-2021, our shootout was filmed late model year 2021. While colors and trim package have changed slightly, there have been no significant updates for 2022 that would affect the baseline performance of the models we’re comparing. When choosing the trim packages to compare, we wanted to keep the MSRPs and features as close as possible among them. With that in mind, in 2022 pricing, we’ll be comparing the $25,299, base model, Polaris General XP1000 Deluxe, Yamaha’s second to the top-of-the-line Wolverine RMAX2 1000 XT-R at 23,899, and Can-Am’s top-of-the-line Commander 1000R XT-P retailing at $22,699.
Any one of these machines could be the fastest in the right environment. But, at the pace most people drive in group rides, all of these SXS are overall pretty well matched at making time on the trail. There are certainly tasks and conditions each one excels at, and choosing which one best suits your needs will, hopefully, be easier having watched our shootout.

Gentlemen, this was a unbelievable unbiased review. I absolutely watched every minute of it and agree with your final results. I do feel that you missed out on one HUGE CATEGORY. Factory Accessories. Most users that buy these machines add alot. Polaris, is definitely #1 in that category. IMO! That is why I chose the 2023 General over the Yamaha. I added factory Tilt out windshield, Upper doors and rear glass and of course because it only comes with a 6 month warranty, I added a 4 year warranty. I truly believe that Factory accessories should be one of your categories going forward. The best hands down unbiased review on these three machines. All information was accurate IMO! 🍀👍🙏🙏💪💪👏👏
Much appreciated! This video took weeks to produce. We will have to take some time to wrap our heads around including factory accessories as a category for future shootouts. We definitely understand where you're coming from. Having the machines to evaluate makes doing a shootout with them easy however evaluating an entire accessory line that we do not have access to would be a little more complicated. Great suggestion though.
@@UTVonDemand I can't even imagine the work that goes into a production like this. Factory Accessories are a big part of these types of UTVs and is huge business. Again, unbelievable unbiased review. 👏
@@gregmcmurray9593 Kindness and well-thought-out suggestions are always greatly appreciated.
You're 100% right. 99% of buyers will not notice huge differences in suspension, engine performance, etc... but I want my bumpers/guards, gun rack, light bars, windshield options, carbo box setups, etc.
@@UTVonDemandPlease do more tests like this. Probably the best tests I ever see.
How about a test of the newest performance machines
To the UTV on demand team: I have to say that I really appreciate the time, effort, thought, and thoroughness you put into your productions. As censorious as youtube is, your content is part of what makes coming to this place worthwhile.
Yeah, we're not the kind of content that typically gets censored. We are not fans of censorship and have had to watch certain content we enjoy elsewhere.
This is one of the best review/comparisons of any vehicle I have ever seen. Keep up the good work!
@@Nicsiq Heck yeah, thanks! Will do. Happy New Year.
Having sold Polaris for 15 years while listening to my customers complain and dealing with the Polaris warranty department I have to say this. Polaris has a genius design market for making what most everyone wants in all department’s. Now the other side of them, with out any doubt they have the worst quality control of any company in the world. They put the parts up for the lowest bids all across the world. They have zero interest in durable long lasting machines, and it’s proven by the 6 or 12 months warranty. Ask anyone that owns a Polaris sxs or atv how often they replace A arm bushing,u joints, drive belts, wiring harness trouble, tps sensor, broken shocks. They are the worst built machine made. But they are nice what time they are not broken down. I’m just saying!!! Oh I almost forgot they do build a fairly durable engine but they take away from that with the weakest differential and axles in the industry. In case you are thinking that I’m selling some other brand,I’m not I no longer deal with any power sports whatsoever. Good luck and ask a lot of honest Polaris owners before buying.
Can't argue with the salesman who watched units come back.
I owned a repair shop for 16 years and worked for a dealer for 8 years before that.We worked on all brands. For the most part we changed oil and installed accessories on the Japanese brands and made money, lots of money, fixing Polaris. The dealer I worked for wouldn't take any Polaris machines in on trade.
Polaris are junk, 2 hundred miles and in the shop already
My father owns two 02 Sportsman 500 that have been beat to shit. No major mechanical issues, just small stuff. Very dependable. Neighbor owns a 2010 rzr that runs beautifully. I think it's all relative to the amount of Polaris's out in the wild. Just so many of them.
This guy knows polaris haha he's correct bushings lol I mean after one fails within your first or second ride just upgrade them all with poly ones.
U joints yeah just as bad.
The engine like he said I do believe is better than the can am engines. Just the rest is a fail.
We had a blast testing the Can-Am Commander, Polaris General and Yamaha RMAX individually then putting them head to head for three days to produce this shootout. We look forward to your questions and comments.
This is An Amazing video. I am wondering why you didn’t mention the 10 year belt warranty on the Yamaha. Maybe it would have made it seem too good.
I’m very impressed on how unbiased this review was. Thanks for the hard work and evaluation of these three units.
Yo G, really glad you enjoyed it. It's hard to be bias when you like all 3.
Goes to show that competition is king and keeps pushing the manufactures to keep improving, so we the consumers win! Great review of these machines. Thank You
They are all so good. Fortunately for us, they're all a little different. We're very happy you enjoyed the shootout.
Yea we win but they keep going up in price...
As an RMax owner, I’d agree with everything said in this review. Sometimes, the rear suspension does want to get air when you might not want it to, and you have to be able to correct for that on the landing. But it is fast, and it’s so good on the tough trails and rock climbing that I like to push to see what I can do before switching into four wheel drive or other drive modes. I typically keep it in sport mode, even on tight, technical mountain trails in Montana. It’s a great machine.
@@Mubvekhar As an owner we really appreciate your feedback! Can't wait to try the updated 2025!
Great job removing Bias from the review. Hard to find unbias opinions. I did a lot of research before I ordered my Rmax but without being able to drive them all it is hard to choose. There are no other videos comparing the three models like this. Glad to see the Rmax scored highest where I needed it too and confirmed my decision. Now it just needs to arrive.
Never any bias here brother. We can have fun and almost any machine in the dirt. Some machines just make it more fun than others. You couldn't have gone wrong with any of these but we are sure you will like your Yamaha.Hope it comes in soon. Hit us back and tell us how you like it.
I’ve been waiting for a while. Just received my new 2022 Rmax 2 wolverine 1000 SE. I would be proud to drive anyone of the three of these Rigs, there is no wrong choice just an individual preference. Watched most of your videos in the last little while they are very informative and of exceptionally quality. Keep them coming.
You nailed it. All of these SXSs are great. We'd be proud to own any one of them. Each excels at different things though. It will all be clearer soon. Thanks for waiting.
2 years later, your Yamaha is as tight as the day is was made. The guy that bought the General 2 years ago has a sloppy, noisy machine with a bunch of error codes.
@@StarDustMoonRocketyou are absolutely right. Mine is as tight as the day I bought it. No joke still love the rig not a single issue
@@novascotiaboy.9191 I've had mine 5 weeks. Nearly 900 miles on it. I think two of my riding friends are going to buy them also.
Wow that was an awesome review. This has been a long awaited shootout. It was surprising how well the RMAX did. Just goes to show they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Any of these machine well get you anywhere and back. I think really it comes down to looks and comfort for the individual. Good job guys keep the great content coming!!!!!!!!!
It was very happy you enjoyed it. Sorry it took so long to produce. Projects like this take a lot of time to produce. The more we do them the faster we'll become. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the shoot out i think i bought the good one i just bought the 2024 R Max LE and i just love it
Congratulations it's a great machine.
The 4 seater test would be cool! Thanks for the information 👍
You're welcome. We're getting more and more requests for a 4 seat shootout.
I don't think you'd of made a terrible choice going home with any of the 3 on the trailer. Who'd of dreamed the selection of machines would of been this diverse 10 years ago. It's almost hard to decide which type of machine to go with, let alone which model!
You nailed it. Regardless of the scoring system that we put in place to make this into a competition, We would all be happy with any of these machines. All very good, all slightly different. Hope to see you tonight for the premiere.
All are cool rigs. Pretty closely matched. The competition is getting us all better rigs. Can’t wait to see these 3 battle it out.
We wouldn't hesitate to buy any one of them. All are very good machines from the factory.
One of the best SSV shoot outs I have seen
Great job
Thanks, we really appreciate it.
one thing: noted at 3:10...... the Can-Am and Polaris both use belt slippage as their "clutch" ...... as my friends have experienced in their machines.... this can leave you stranded in a deep water crossing once the belt starts to wear as the belt will then be really slippy in the water... both their machines got stuck in the deep water while my Kawasaki just motored on through it (Kawi also runs a transmission internal clutch and constant belt engagement similar to the R-Max), this is also why the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines are the only belt driven machines to have "engine braking" as they employ a one-way cluch in the transmission to keep the belt engaged at all speeds..... hence why you also don't hear of belt problems in these machines and why they offer such long warranties on the belt drive systems...... they know they aren't going to break or have problems very often, where in a Polaris you better bring a spare belt and all the tools to change it on the trail. speaking of the engine braking, at 7:00 when you see the Polaris descending a slippery hill, you can hear the driver riding the brake and somewhat struggling to keep control- in the Yamaha and Kawasaki machines you don't have to worry about this as you can just let off the gas and the engine braking is much easier to descend slippery hills in. Finally for those that want to call me out, I own two machines currently a Yamaha Wolverine and a Kawasaki KRX, and have owned a Polaris Ace in the past......there's a reason i sold that POS Polaris.
Great review of these three machines. I have owned 2 CanAms in the past and currently have a RZR XP1000 Trail & Rock, which I love. Never had the opportunity to even ride in a Yamaha so I have to trust your judgement about the RMAX. At 74 years old and a wild driver, my wife FINALLY convinced me to slow down, sell the Rock & Trail and buy something she would be more comfortable riding in. One of the deciding factors for me was the availability of service and parts. I, or I should say WE, decided on the General XP1000 Deluxe with Ride Command. So all that being said I appreciate your thorough evaluation and now I will " slow down", enjoy the General and keep the tires on the ground ( well most of the time anyway :).
We love that you're willing to slow down a bit to get your wife involved. Fortunately, as you saw you don't have to slow down much. Enjoy that new machine. We are sure you'll like it.
Thank you for taking the time to gather such detailed and unbiased info I dont typically sub to channels of this sort and just watch when they pop up in my reccomended list but the quality displayed here has earned you one. Also pllleeeassseee do a 4 seater comparison maybe split between short stadium seating types like rmax4, pioneer 4 or 5, etc. and the limo styles, like general 4, commander max, etc.
Thank you very much. Really appreciate all that positivity! Thank you for the sub as well. If we may have to look into a 4 seat shootout at some point. We have gotten quite a few requests since launching this one.
@@UTVonDemand yes, yes, yes!!! 4 seater shootout pretty pretty please :)
Very nice shootout! Historically, Yamaha has far better reliability than the other two but that Can Am looks good too. We're looking into 4seaters and the Rmax keeps it's short wheelbase. Still difficult to swing mid 20k for an off-road toy!
We totally get it on price. You might find the Is entry level 4 door sport machines a little bit more affordable. Is a friend who owns planet side-by-side Just purchased a Maverick sport 4 seater and loves it. We're happy to hear you enjoyed the shootout.
Newest poo-poo 4 seaters go into the 40s....
We just purchased an RMAX4 today for the family. Taking it out tomorrow! From an ex diesel mechanic, i immediately noticed the quality of the chassis, suspension and the car like interior. Also, it’s a Yamaha 👌

Probably the best shootout video ever!!
Now that's an endorsement thank you.
Let's not leave out RELIABILITY! Yamaha ftw!
Reliability is subjective and unfortunately we Don't get to rack up a 1000 miles on these machines. For the week's worth of beating that we put on them we can happily report that nothing broke. Love testing, hate wrenching.
Except the Rmax has had some reliability problems out of the gate with the engine and transmission. Check on it here on CZcams. I am certain they'll iron out all the problems soon. However, it confirms the wisdom of not buying any new design the first year it's out.
Absolutely Yamaha takes the cake for that in every vehicle they make, brp products are bulletproof as well. I’ve seen too many Polaris have problems in my life too say anything good about them.
@@Lalaafastroli Spot on! No doubt in my mind that Polaris finishes 3rd in quality and reliability, and while being the most expensive. Not a good combo IMO.
@@UTVonDemand well said. Unfortunately everything is gonna break if they get beat on
Heck of a comparison video! Best I’ve seen. I’m in the market now for something, just undecided yet. So many good options.
Well then, we made this shoot out just for you. Hopefully we answered most of your questions to help you make a more educated decision.
Awesome review Thank you, I just purchased the 2021 commander and these three machines I hummed and hawed over for a couple months before moving on purchase. The upright seating helps the ingress/ exit, Also offers a bit more sight line specifically longer sight before moving over obstacle. My last machine had upright seating. The most noticeable and i find important is that upright seating gave me back pain after the majority of train. I now have 40 hours on my 2021 commander and no back issues at all. I wanted to note that I found while resurrecting the r max only months after the machine was released two u tube videos where the transmission had to be replaced. This being the first machine they have put that much power into a machine with that much weight might just be a first year learning experience. All machines look awesome. The major selling point for me ended up being comfort and full time storage, meaning storage of items that people should always have with them. Fire extinguisher, first aid, spare belt, tools, proper strap to not hurt trees, tire repair, flashlight, garbage storage, excreta. Hope this helps.
The transmission failures were not because of engineering design but because of improper bearing shimming.......human assembly line error. It affected a very small number of units. So small that no recall was done. Commander Maxes have a front driveshaft problem, which isn't assembly line error but engineering folly. The lower-end visco lock diffs are still plagued today with issues and we all know 3 wheel drive sucks.
@@MassiveOverkill I haven't been stuck yet. good luck with the yamaha looks like a good machine.

I’ve never had any reservations buying a Yamaha, dirt, street, whatever. They may not be at the top of any one category but they always score good acres the board. Great vid it wouldn’t upset me to own any of them. After riding bikes for years I drove my cousins side by side and that sold me, radio, cooler, fishing poles, lawn chairs, yeh I’m in lol, especially the older I get.
I have never set a reminder for an upcoming video... until now. SO PUMPED!
The pressure is on. Hope you like it.
Same here!! NEVER!!

YOU GUYS DO THE BEST SHOOTOUTS !!!!
We do our best. Thank you very much.
The looks of the yamaha can't be beat! I watched your videos and test drove the machines out here in Arizona, I came home with a 2022 Yamaha Rmax4 and I couldn't be happier! The can am was my second choice while the Talon was 3rd. I couldn't risk a fire in the garage with a Polaris so I stayed away! lol
Hey ! Just wanted to say how good of a job you guys did comparing these SXS's, I loved that you put the same tires on all machines, that really evens the playing field. My friend had the original Canines on his KRX and they are a very good tire. Like you guys said, you can't go wrong with any machine, they are all very nice, the Rmax is my choice for my riding style and the terrain here in Eastern Canada. Plus the Yamaha reliability and belt drive system is second to none. I was super impressed with the Popo having Walker Evans shocks and sailed over those jumps but couldn't believe how much those seats shook while riding, and the Can Am is nice but the body lines on it are weird, it looked like they took a box off a different machine and just stuck it on the commander.... where the Polaris and Yamaha have a clean shape and body lines. Anyways You guys did an amazing job with this video, very honest and great test for all of these machines. New Subscriber !
We are very happy to have you. Thanks for watching and for commenting. We felt running the same tire on all 3 machines was the only way to fairly compare them. We have heard a similar comment from others regarding the commander's dump bed. You are correct, integration doesn't look as seamless although it works well. Stay warm up there in Eastern Canada. Let's chat again soon.
@@UTVonDemand haha Fresh snow on the ground today, winter is on it's way haha Keep up the great videos !
@@Maritimer We'll do. Enjoy the snow.
@@Maritimer YepI totally agree with you!!👍
Hey maritimer, I watched it too and am torn between the commander and the rmax. Thanks for your opinion. I may just get the rmax.
Congratulations on Kyle Anderson winning the Pro Stock NA class for 2023 King of Hammers and finishing 34th overall. That's right, the Yamaha 'golf cart' beat out many highly- modified sport SxS, including 2 KRXs and a Honda Talon in his class. No Generals or Commanders anywhere in sight of KOH.
Impressive!
Great review and as a former CZcams content creator I know this rook a ton of work and time to do this! Thank You! Now how about the 4 seater shoot out with these models as part 2?
We sold our General and bought a Commander 1000 XMR after the TWENTY SEVENTH TIME having to have it serviced in just 2 years, and it's in an entirely different class for those wanting a do it all machine. We've towed our 2680 lb overland teardrop almost 280 miles with it multiple times. It's been over 4 feet deep in the mud to the point where you have to get out of the seat so you can keep breathing and still gets itself out. The thing just doesn't care where you are or what you're doing, it just does it. Now the only time Polaris comes to my mind is when one of the people I ride with is stuck or breaks down. I won't ever buy a Polaris again.
Thanks for sharing your story.
Great review. Really enjoyed watching to the very end.
Thank you and thank you!
Excellent review! Now do the 4 seater versions!! That's where these machines are very different.
Thank you. A lot of work went into it.
Overall, you couldn't go wrong with any of these machines. But for me personally, i'd definitely choose the Yammie because for me reliability is very important. All our past Yammies have been rock solid. Our other brands, not so great tbh.
Exactly, they don’t even mention the fact that the Yamaha has a 10 year belt warranty.
the Yamaha engine and drive line will probably out last the Polaris I've seen Polaris vehicles have worn out wheel bearings etc at just 4000 km
Not the first year Rmax which has problems with the engine and transmission. Hopefully Yamaha has fixed those problems in the 2022 model.
This was the side-by-side review that I was needing, thank you!
Very happy to help.
Please please please follow up with the 4 seater versions from each in the same test environment ;)
Definitely one to ponder.
This is a very thorough, and comprehensive review - excellent job! You've provided a lot of useful information but if I were looking to buy one of these right now it would be difficult to choose. Personally, I feel the General is the nicest looking overall, I love the front end of the Yamaha but I find the front of the Commander is awkward, but perhaps it would look better in person. I like the look of the previous one better. I like options when it comes to the drivetrain, so I like The Commander best in that department, but I also like a roomy cab and it seems to be smaller than the General or Rmax. I currently have a 2015 Commander with over 14,000 km (8,700 miles) so it's been a durable machine. I guess for me it would come down to the Can Am or Yamaha. Keep up the great work UTVonDemand. I've watched lots of your videos and look forward to more.
Thank you for such a positive comment. If you liked your old commander and it has been reliable we believe you would love a new one. The new machine's overall performance is dramatically improved. The new cockpit seems like it's quite a bit more spacious than the old 1. Had a little time to ride in 1 during our commander test video shoot. That machine had a hard life but it was still going..
@@UTVonDemand You're welcome, and thanks for the reply. I will definitely try to find one to sit in before making up my mind when the time comes to trade in for a new machine.
All these machines sure do look a lot nicer and more capable than the Rhino 700 I bought in 2008!
Times have changed lol
I had a lot of fun in the old Rhino
@@AaronJones-yt4vd well then, you're in for a real treat if you haven't tried one of these.
I'll bet none will last as long though.
I'm all in on the rmax4. Yamaha has a great 4 seater. Same as the rmax 2, but with back seats. 108hp 👍
We have not driven it but it certainly looks to be the right machine for those who want something a little more compact. And like you said, 108 horsepower.
My Polaris mechanic told me that Polaris wants to get one dollar in repairs for every mile driven. He works at a dealership. That dealership also sells Can-Am and he said Can-Am was a much better choice.
You guys have done an excellent job of a fair review on the three maybe the 4seater will be next keep up the good work
Thanks a lot. We put a lot of time into this. Our ability to do shootouts at this time is a bit limited by manufacturer availability.
Great video guys! Haspin is a good test area! I’d have a heck of a time choosing one of those machines. All are good!
If working with all of the test writers and machines, after putting the shootout together it would still be hard to choose.
Best review and comparison I’ve seen. 💥💥 Also, thank you for using the same tires … so many other reviews (recreational and 4WD vehicles) don’t, and I think it greatly hinders “objective” results.
Agreed
I know this is 2 years old. I am in the market as of now for a new machine. (99% leaning Yamaha RMax) But i think they should be tested as how they come from the showroom.
Good test and I like the fact you put the same tires on all the machines they are all good choices but I love my 21 commander it’s the most comfortable machine of the 3 I tried them all but your right sight lines are reduced due to the lower seat hight!
We love the Commander as well. It would have been the pick of two of our drivers to purchase if one wasn't so short.
Excellent review! Honestly I expected 30 or 40x more subs than what you have. Keep pumping content like this and you will get there fast.
Thanks a lot. More to come!
I bought my first Yamaha in 1963. I bought my first Polaris in 1996. I've never walked home from either one. I would, at this time, buy the Yamaha due to it's clutch and superior fit and finish and reliability.
Can't really go wrong with any of these rigs and I look forward to watching this video, but I'll tell ya my future prediction.... Yamaha will be the winner. It does everything VERY well and is built like a tank!
1st prediction. We'll see if you're right. We'll tell you now, you really can't go wrong with any one of these.Very competitive class.

@@UTVonDemand You guys deserve it. You worked hard on this and it shows!
@@DUNEATV 🙂👍
Rmax is a beast and most reliable.
One of the best tests I've seen.
Thanks for the ringing endorsement.
I think a key difference between the three is the rated towing capacity. At 2K, both the Commander and RMAX have the capability to tow the other off the trail in the event of breakdown. At a 1500lbs rated capacity, the General XP 1000 does not even have the capability to tow its own weight. Big deal breaker for me!
It depends on what your intended use is.
Yamaha is the clear winner
Commander looks best all-rounder among this group. Thus making it practical purchase. ☝️😎
Right on.
Great vid! Very informative and fair. I own the RMAX XTR2. I already have 1400 kms on it. I do like it but it’s not perfect, there are things I hate. 1) it’s way to Friggin loud! Had a sound system ordered but cancelled it because I have to wear ear plugs for my aggressive riding style! 2) has a hard time starting In the cold. 3) you get very dirty driving it. Not cool getting your hunting gear covered in mud 🤦♂️. For the money, Yamaha should have added big fender flares. I bought some aftermarket flares which solved the problem. 4) have had a few recalls and two of the FOX shocks had to be fixed on warranty already. One on the right front, one on the left rear. 5) no turf mode. The big aggressive Carnivors are very hard on the lawn. Other than those things, I really like my RMAX! Lol
Thanks for sharing your feedback. It's like you said, no vehicle is perfect. We wish we could do a project build on all 3 of the machines in the class. Each of them need a few upgrades. Planet SXS Purchased one and is working on a number of upgrades addressing many of the issues you listed. We're looking forward to doing a test on that machine. Hope to chat again soon.
Been to 3 off road Jamboree's in Utah this year. It's tough to find many RMAX's or Yamaha side by sides. I love Yamaha's!!! Don't get me wrong. I'm 68 years old and have been doing this since I was a kid. But there are a lot of Polaris units out there. Far more than any other brand. Chances of breaking are pretty good with that number especially when you put a driver in the seat that goes flat out all the time. My point is...You can break anything if you try. I have a Ranger xp1000 right now, 5k miles of good sensible driving. No putt putt driving but some tough off road and long straightaways in AZ with 110 degree temps. One problem. The clutch, that's it. So what! My point is, they are all good to some extent. It comes down to the number of brands and who's driving / maintaining the vehicle. If your racing them you don't count. These are built for fun, not killing yourself or someone else driving the opposite direction. I would buy any of these models. Personal preference is what it comes down to. My favorite quote," A mans gots to know his limitations" Bashing others models is not what this excellent shootout video is about. Great job UTV on Demand!!
What an perfect review. highlighted everything that should be taken in to consideration when purchasing a sxs. I appreciate the review I'm excited for my 2022 commander xt 1000r to come in! Hopefully your channel can do a review on the xt model!
Thanks for the love. We would love to review the XT. It kind of depends on unit availability.
Great review! Loved every minute
Thank you that's great to hear.
Must say although I’m late the video was definitely fantastic. As a 6’4 ex football player I have found the can am best suits me personally. I like the spacing in the can am and the general for me although a great vehicle it hurts my back too much something about the seat position I guess. Yamaha is also really nice love the rugged capabilities but the bed is lacking for me. Can am to me has the best bed, seats and performance I need. Trailing in the ozark mountains for a multi day camping trip or doing heavy work around the house the can am is a absolute weapon. All of these are definitely fantastic rides no doubt and I hope everyone enjoys there rides and are safe. Commander 2023 XMR 1000
I had a 2014 Commander Max, but no longer needed a four-seater and wanted to upgrade. I am not a fan of Polaris, and really wanted a Commander XTP, but in summer of 2021 none were available. My local Yamaha dealer called and said he got an RMAX-2 LE unexpectedly and was I interested? So, I bought it, and have been riding it for about five months now. The fit and finish is superb, and the interior appointments are better than the Commander, and I have come to really enjoy being able to adjust shocks and ride from inside the cab. It goes everywhere I want to, and does everything I ask of it. But after riding it a while, here is the thing I have found I DON'T like, and it bothers me enough that I might trade it in- driver leg room! There is no room between the brake pedal and cockpit wall to slide your foot past and extend your leg! A minor thing perhaps, but I am a Veteran with some beat up knees, and not being able to do that becomes very uncomfortable after about 30 minutes of riding, and I have to stop and either get out, or just open the door for a minute to stretch my leg. I have since sat in an XTP, and I CAN do that in that machine. It's such a minor thing, but really detracts from my riding pleasure. Dammit!
Thank you very much for sharing your experience with others. We don't think this is a minor point if it's a vehicle you are going to ride in all day long. Our tallest driver had a problem with his knee bumping the digital keymouth on the dashboard but he is pretty tall and leggy. Different machines fit people differently and finding the one that fits you best is pretty important.
I think you may be able to fix your issue by raising the seat a couple/few inches if you're not too terribly tall to begin with.
@@MassiveOverkill Hmmm...maybe. I am 6' 1", but I think I still have some usable headroom there. I'll look into that- thanks!
@@UTVonDemand I am 6-4 , own 2021 can am commander xt. have no problem with knee room.
AWESOME JOB, putting these machines to the test
Very good review!, I agree with a lot of what was said. I have raced the rmax in Enduro and can attest to a somewhat unpredictable rear end with the stock set up as well.
Different shocks with changing the wieght dispersion, (i used a custom tire rack hung out back) can go a long ways in whooped out terrain at speeds.
Overall, this is super super good review nice job guys, seemed as honest as it gets.
We appreciate the positive feedback and for you sharing your experience. The only thing that stinks about shootouts is that it's impossible to emphasize just how good each unit really is. It's a great time to be a SXS enthusiast!
No one is talking about dependability and the ability to purchase parts with all that is going on.
In order to discuss reliability we have to 1st break things. In the few 100 miles we put on these cars on these cars nothing broke. We are sure if you dig into forums you can find out more about what people are breaking. However, we cannot include consumer opinion that we did not monitor in a shootout. Also, we understand that parks availability is a problem right now for all of us. Unfortunately, there is no way we can gauge the availability of all of the parts available for these machines. We get our best. You have to take it from here.
If I had to make any complaints with my 2021 XTR it would be cab noise, MPG (14.5 so far), tire sling, weight (1800+ lb.s) and dust (I have front and rear windows). All that said I love this machine. It flat azz flies.
With durability comes weight. No way around it.
Easily resolved with 22 gram HV weights. Lower noise AND better gas mileage. See my videos about plugging up those nooks and crannies to reduce dust as well as installing UORP's wheel well block-offs.
Yep, my biggest complaint too! Stupidly noisy! Need to wear ear plugs. And paying that much money, shouldn’t have to “plug holes” to keep dust out. The other issue that the shootout showed us how dirty you get driving it. Had to install big fender flares to fix the issue.
I got the 2020 commander do to the fact that it wasn’t in the 21 line up and it was my favorite machine. Now am wondering should I trade it in for the new one or RMAX
Either the 2021 Commander or RMAX would be a big step up. Which one will make you happiest will depend on the type of terrain you typically drive on and what you want to do with it. Get back with us if you need a consultation.
Yamaha all the way. Have one of the first 2004 Rhinos only oil and diff changes not even a new belt. Polaris you must have belts along and know how to change them, Can Am its all parts. Where is your nearest Dealer, how and where do you drive. Ive pulled back many newer SXSs back to the cabin. Its all in set up when you get it, use it or loose it , many options, and of coures driver and trail lines.
Yamaha certainly builds a good machine.
Great video an very informative. I still think I would love the Polaris general
We certainly did. It's the best machine for a number of people. Glad you enjoyed the shootout.
Competition is awesome ! When I sold my Maverick trail 1000, I skipped the sport/utility category, and went to sport /performance. $23,384 OTD for my 22 X3 DS Turbo . Wow , it will eat all three of these machines alive in anything except utility /bed space / work and was as cheap, and cheaper than these 3 units lol. All are nice machines !
Yeah sounds like you got a pretty good deal on your machine. If some people just prefer utility capability or realize that there was no point in having a 190 horsepower machine when all you're going to do is drive-through the woods at 25 miles an hour.Obviously we don't drive that slow but we see a lot of people in turbos that leave us scratching our head like, why did you buy that? We hope you're taking advantage of all that horsepower.Congrats on the purchase.
@@UTVonDemand Yea I did , (multi-repeat customer ) at the same dealership.
Oh I agree , that is in part why i didn’t wait on the RR I had on order and just grabbed the baby turbo they got in . It’s got plenty of jam and will keep you grinning like you’re 16 in your first fast car again.
Most all of us adapt to whatever our machines features and capabilities are . Yamahas ultramatic CVT is the best quality CVT on the market , and I like can am machines . I tie the commander and rmax and then the general .
Excellent quality review videos brothers ! Keep it up.
I would love to see a reliability comparison as well.
Great video really enjoyed it expecting you include the other 1000cc sport-utility machines and have that winner take on the Yamaha R Max
Did we miss some other models?
@@UTVonDemand After further review, there are only two more that I think had a chance. The pioneer 1000 and just for the talking point I would have put in the Arctic Cat 1000. The one that kinda looks like a truck
And KRX 1000
Watched this on the way to pick up my new 23 Rmax XTR 😊
WIN!!!
@@UTVonDemand win was picking it up for 15k .. 🤯
yall should do one of the same three machines but the 4 seater versions!!!
That is a popular request.
Can Am commander is the best of this test !
We would certainly be happy to own one.
Despite the Yamaha Winning, y’all still forgot to mention the 10 YEAR belt warranty!!!!
Common man!!!
Dude! How do you leave that out?!???
Quality wise, Yamaha takes the cake at a 10.
very nice video. I'm looking to buy one of these but have trouble just doing reliable online research. This is super helpful!
I like to see the Segway UT10 1000 added to a shootout
Reliability.
Yamaha 10
Can-Am 6
Polaris 3
I guess that's another category for Yamaha?
Thanks for this awesome video! I feel like no stone was left unturned.....we went with the General XP 1000 and have not looked back since! The machine is such a blast!!!
We were very happy you took the time to watch. We totally agree. The general is a blast.
Now report back when they each have 5k miles, and I'd bet the yamaha is leaps and bounds ahead.
Appreciate the content!
We enjoyed making it for you.
Awesome shootout guys. Could you include “Trail Repairability Potentials” as well? Thanks!
Glad you liked the shootout. The reason that we do not discuss reliability much Is that we typically don't suffer breakage issues during our testing. We work with good drivers who drive intelligently. We do understand that certain brands are more reliable and more robustly built than othersBut we can't go off of viewer feedback when it comes to reliability.. We have no way of knowing how their machines were driven. What you're asking for is pretty important though. We will try to interject a bit more opinion on reliability in the future based upon machines we've owned for a long period of time. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I believe that the question was about repairing possible problems that may occur on the trail. Like maybe if you had to replace a drive belt etc. Ease of maintenance would be an interesting subject as well.
Great review video... Definitely some great machines, no doubt... 👍👍
People should have a hard time picking. They're all that good. Glad you enjoyed it doc.
Excellent video guys. I'd like to pick up my first sxs someday. My heart really wants a yxz but my brain says rmax.
Really glad you enjoyed the video. We have had a lot of fun in both machines, YXZ and RMAX
Any idea when you will get the 4 seat versions in for a shootout? You always have excellent reviews and shootouts. Replacing my wolverine X4 for one of these in 4 seat configuration.
As much as we hate to disappoint, it is something we will not be able to pull off in the short term. Coordinating all 3 machines with the different manufacturers could be difficult right now but we will look into it.
Bro in law bought the general reviewed here...real world here. Bed hinges welded crooked, tailgate wouldn't close from new, primary clutch fell of engine at a little over 1k miles...fit and finish total garbage.... same crew has 2 rmax 2, fit and finish excellent, no bed/tailgate issues, superior clutching, engine braking, and diff lock. Same crew, can am, better seating position then all reviewed for big drivers used to sport machines. Nice it offers turf mode but modes and diff lock too complicated and gives up grip when it matters most in trail situations where the rmax will cruise up getting you to the top of climb safely....RMAX is the winner, can am respectively in a close 2nd, poo poo in its deserving 3rd. Same junk they been pawning off on poo poo fans forever
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It's cool to hear from somebody elst who's had all 3 machines to experience. Our tallest driver felt differently about the canam than your guys the York eyes and we did not have the same issues with the general's bed butt inconsistencies happen. Thanks for sharing.
This was a cool review and after watching it i believe i made the right choice for me.. I have the 21 commander and love it.. All of these machines are great in there own way.. When it comes down to picking one i think it all depends on what you will use it most for and which one you think looks the best..
The commander is definitely the number one machine for a number of people. An aftermarket clutch kit should be all that required to turn it into a bit more of a screamer, if that's what someone wants from their Can-Am Commander.
@@UTVonDemand I dont need mine to scream.. One thing i like the most about it is the low end torque.. Since i rock crawl with it most of the time i love the low end it has already.. Not many places to really get down on it where i do most of my riding and the when i do find one 40 50 mph is plenty fast for me and the commander has no problem doing that.. I will say that among the mods that probably most people do (windshield, stereo, ext) the one performance mod i would recommend is a dual rate suspension.. Ive done it to mine and WOW what a huge difference over the stock suspension.. Other than that ive been very impressed with it overall..
@@dlcogburn6992 We love hearing owner feedback. What did you do to your suspension? Did you replace your shocks or just your Springs? What brand did you go with?
@@UTVonDemand I did some research and a lot of people seem to like shock therapy so i went with there dual rate spring kit.. I called and talk to them about how i ride and what i do with the machine most of the time. They were very helpful and very precise.. Once i gave them the info needed they sent me a spring kit that i installed myself.. Was not very hard to do and took me less than 3 hours.. Probably could have done it faster if i had one of those fancy spring compressors.. The difference was noticeable immediately and the kit gave me about another inch of ground clearance.. Im not a shock expert by no means but even i could tell the difference in ride quality of the stock springs and being a true dual rate spring kit gives it a ton of adjustability.. They also offer a valuing kit so you can rebuild the entire shock and that is supposed to make the ride even better.. If i was a more extreme rider i might consider something like that but for me the spring kit was perfect..
@@dlcogburn6992 Thanks for letting us know. We called around and were looking for shock options for all 3 of these cars out of curiosity.
My dad is 6'6 which has most leg room?
Would love to see y'all test the new Yamaha RMax sport edition that came out for 2022 revised suspension and tire choice should make it a more sporty all-around workhorse.
We totally agree. We will be working on that.
always great content from you guys.
We were proud of this one. Glad you liked it!
Hoping to see a 4 seater shoot out with these models.
Wasn't planning on it in the short term but more people keep asking so you never know.
Great review! I'm already set on the Yammie. I'd heard from many the leg room in the General is cramped but nothing is mentioned here
Head to the dealer try them on.
@@UTVonDemand I sat in a General about mmm 5yrs ago, it was pretty tight for me at 5'11" 180lb - the footwells were cramped too. I'm heading to the dealer to buy the RMAX in the spring, I'll re-weld seat mounts if I have to :)
@@Cacheola We look forward to hearing how you enjoy it.
All so close it's like pick your fav and enjoy!!...I've been a Can-Am Yamaha Honda Kawasaki and Polaris owner in the past and never had an issue with none of them but now settled in with Can-Am sxs's since 2014 and now own a 21 Can-Am 1000 turbo RR and 18 Polaris ATV 1000 the ATV for my jigging around and driveway plowing...love them both...I am looking to add a more utility with some ooomph and think I'll stick with the Can-Am's and buy a Commander.
You nailed it. They are all very close. Our only recommendation, if you get the 10 AM, get a clutch kit. We would like it to build a little more RP m's on steep hills.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but maybe Eric should stick to on-roading if he had a difficult time figuring which 4x4 setting to use in the Can Am LOL. Very good video.
LOL, The differences between trail and trail active weren't incredibly apparent until we we drove the command commander with the stock tires in slick conditions. With the time frame in which the different machines arrived and departed we had to film the canning um the canams standalone test after we filmed the shootout. That was Eric's 1st test with us and honestly he was quite fast and precise. Really appreciate you watching. Hope to see you again soon.
How do they handle in cood and snow? Any seat heaters or hot air blowers? Would you use them for snow plowing?
