A few weeks ago I sat next to a man I'd never met before at an event, who was in an expensive tailored suit and a rolex watch that I think was genuine. He was lamenting the fact that he and his wife were struggling to buy a house. He showed me some pictures of houses they had been looking at in London - all huge and nearly a million pounds! It had to be close to his kid's private school. He was really down in the dumps. At the end, he got a taxi back to the airport, but riding the bus home to my modest house in my second hand clothes carrying a box of leftover food on my knee, I found myself feeling a bit sorry for that man whose world was so different to mine because I realised I had something he would never have - enough.
Thank you Vicky! A realistic & reassuring reality check that most of us are doing better than we think! I feel blessed to have housing, food, no debt, savings and all whilst on an income way below the median. Budgeting + cash envelopes keep me debt free!
I know this isn’t really the point you are making but a word of caution. Myself my brother my neice and two of my nephews went to private schools. In NONE of those situations was it worth it. All of us did poorly on exams I ended up starting again at tech and doing great in my A levels. My son is at a state school which is fantastically well run. Yes there are large classes but the devotion to teaching, clarity in lessons methods of teaching is outstanding. He is excelling all of our rich relatives who have paid for education. Please think hard it is the quality of the school not the money you pay that matters.
Comparing myself to my immediate friends and family (most of them, at least) I am one of the poorest. This doesn't bother me. I am happy for them. They don't brag and most don't live above their means or in a showy manner. I just live in a pretty well off area and am living on a more meager income. I don't have debt of any kind and save decent money every month with my partner. We still live a good life. We do know if we take the whole world into consideration we are doing quite well with our lifestyle and have a lot of luxuries.
I think most of us have. I certainly wasn’t good with money in my 20s and am fortunate to have had a good leg up in life. Now I wish I had learned more earlier, but the best time to start is right now!
