"What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good single take film. As technology has gotten better and cameras have become smaller and more mobile, we’ve seen a flood of “oner shorts” hit the landscape. Some good. Most bad.
Whiteout from writer/director Lance Edmands is a tense, well-crafted single-take short. The gimmick here is that everything takes place from the perspective of the backseat of a car. Now, I don’t mean gimmick in a pejorative sense, but rather as a clever cinematic device Edmands employs for peak efficacy. Taking place on a dark rural road in the midst of a snowstorm, the confined backseat perspective is claustrophobic in the best of ways. You desperately want the camera to pan or reveal more information, but it refuses to. And, so, you’re left stuck with the protagonists as they handle a tense, unconventional, and uncomfortable situation in real time.
Purely on a visceral level, the result is undeniably engaging. Edits literally and figuratively cut tension, so by eschewing them altogether, the suspense becomes palpable. Moreover, I like that it’s essentially a horror/suspense film that doesn’t fall victim to the cliché tenets of the genre. It would have been so easy to make the antagonist a generic masked monster, but instead it’s just a guy…an unstable guy. And, as a result, it’s so much creepier. Likewise, we get a solid amount of character development, something which is often absent in films wholly devoted to a singular visual concept such as this.
The film has other things on its mind as well. While you could argue that its social commentary isn’t particularly deep, it’s very much present. Our protagonists, sitting in their warm Prius, represent a sort of enclosed privilege-a literal bubble-that sets them apart from the unknown “other” outside. One reason for the film’s effectiveness is that the protagonists are simultaneously insufferable and totally relatable: the sort of upper-middle class, self-aware white people who claim to want to help and be a force of good, but are left waffling and bickering when presented with the opportunity to actually do so. I don’t mean to suggest this is some sore of millennial class screed, but privilege is very much a part of what Edmands is wrestling with here. Endings are hard and I’m not sure this quite sticks the landing, but there’s no doubt it’s engrossing from beginning to end, leaving the viewer plenty to think about along the way.
As he writes to Short of the Week:
“I think Whiteout is a story about how people react when their safety bubble is penetrated by the threat of the unknown. When our characters, Lydia and Jake, set out for home in a blizzard, they remain perfectly at ease in the comfort of their warm car. But when a strange man appears, their sense of privilege comes to a screeching halt. His neediness penetrates their security. That unstable balance leads to an immediate breakdown in communication between the couple. As they project their various theories onto this blank-faced man, all sorts of insecurities about their relationship come to light. Ultimately, the film is about how our insular lives often belie the lurking threat of the world around us. However earnestly we may try to construct our interior, the exterior always finds a way in. But what happens when we let our fear overwhelm our empathy? “
Whiteout had a solid festival run, playing Tribeca, Maryland, Palm Springs, and Fantasia. We’re excited to feature the film as it makes its online premiere." - S/W Curator, Ivan Kander

The single take aspect of it doesn't feel gimmicky and adds to the experience. The camera only shows what we need to see. Great job sir.
it's very simple, yet feels unique still
Every time she goes out my heart start racing
Loved it ! And not gonna lie but the window wipers constantly scared me.
Exactly. It solely adds so much more to the film.
Yeah the wipers added some sort of ominous kinda sound. I don’t know why they sorta made me nervous
Wiper jumpscare
😂
Brilliantly paced, well acted, perfectly believable and no un-necessary filler. I give this 10/10
The part that had me on the edge of my seat, was when he came back out of those freakin' trees...WITHOUT THE DAMN PARKA!"
This is much more complicated than it first appears. The wandering man is a metaphor for their relationship. He can't communicate, he's been injured and he just disappears and reappears without explanation. Their relationship is dead and they won't admit it.
Great Review 👍🎉
You seem to have experience with failed relationships. Am I wrong? Don't give up, you'll find that great girl someday.
@@Gizamalukeix Beeuutch................
When the girl got out to look for him, I thought just follow the foot prints in the snow.
;good short video
Stephen King would also want you to follow the foot prints in the snow on a isolated mountain road in the middle of the night.
@@richarddewitt2072 for this particular tale, i don’t believe there would’ve been any. At least, not in my theory.
Definitely wanted to know more. Unfortunate circumstance caused by a misstep in their hair trigger tempers and poor communication.
Camera showed everything we needed to see and the tension was very well created. Good job!
Communication isn't shit in a relationship. Setting rules however, is, Ebert.
Why not put the car in reverse? The husband had to put the car in gear anyways. Anyhow, I quite enjoyed this film; well done.
the husband seemed to have an unnecessary aggression towards the man the whole time (look at 5:17) maybe he was looking for a reason to drive forward
Is it weird that every time they open the door my heart will go slomo.. & those wipers.. i swear i never got scared by wipers.!!!
"he could die of hypothermia and you would always blame yourself" NO she would always blame you
Facts😅
You know this is a movie when most people would just go around the guy I know I would!
You also "know" that sliding into a snow bank in the middle of the night on a mountain road next to a pyscho is another option, another short film.
Me too
When she went to look for him I thought "oh great, another victim!".
The man has a catatonic shock. He probably had an accident with a deer or his family is injured. At the end he wakes up and realizes the situation and panics for help.
Excellent set in scene.
Lydia really pissing me off
:))))
Excellent. So glad I came back to watch this in full. If you skipped to the comments before pressing play or watching this all the way to the end, take it from me: you won't be disappointed. Now go watch it all.
not gonna lie id be pretty piseed if my wife just gave out my jacket like that too lol
& that’s what makes you a terrible person
My Dad was a bus driver in the 1970's, & one day he stopped for a guy who fell over on the road while crossing, he helped the guy to the side of the road & sat him down, one of the passengers ran to a phone box across the street & called the emergency services as he was bleeding from his head. My Dad popped his head in the bus doorway to ask his passengers to be patient while help arrived, but when he turned back the man was gone. The cops soon arrived & my Dad explained what had happened, but he couldn't say where the guy had gone, also none of the passengers on the bus saw him leave either. The cops searched the streets for a scruffy looking bleeding old man, but he had totally vanished. If someone wants to make a short movie of this story be my guest.
💡
That’s called a made-up story
Like anyone needs your permission to use that terrible script in a short film…
@@LordOfThePancakes Don't change the habit of a life time 'cakey pants', your script is a tale of hate filled experiences & you spread your misery wherever you go, freak.
@@LordOfThePancakes That's right 'Cakey Pants', get upset & negative then deflect, as your Dad never needed your permission, & that's your terrible script, a nightmare short film. Lord of Botts
It is about their misery in this relationship. And they finally killed it. Great job. Thank you. Congrats!
This was awesome! The dialogue and acting were both outstanding and it being one take was extremely impressive!
That woman was doing WAY TOO MUCH
Awesome film. Trying to figure out what was going to happen but never actually figuring it out made this extremely riveting. Nice work!
A nail biting one take thriller with a great performance and camera work
Intelligent response?Ask ,once, from a distance ,if they need help.Upon non response, noticing blood and physical state, call police, lock doors, back off and wait for police.Done.
Otherwise, you're putting yourself, and them, in unnecessary danger.
Just like a white woman in a scary movie!!!😂😂
True
Why the white comment? 🙄
@@jewelhaines8842because only a white woman would suggest to go in the freezing cold woods to help a complete stranger who happens to be a damn psycho!
Thank you to +ShortoftheWeek for posting our short!
This is a great short dude! Good work!
Woman: what's wrong with you?
Me: he's standing, moving around, has shoes, that's good enough for me to say CYA!!! 👋🚗
Original. Minimal. Tense. Human.
The horn honk was hilarious😂💯
This was 10/10 for a single shot film. Awesome
This made my heart race!
the windshield being a screen is a very clever way to do all sorts of tricks with the camera.
I saw this at Tribeca! It's so good, glad it's online now so I can show friends.
This is absolutely brilliant!
Excellent film, seriously nail biting stuff!
Excellent short. Had my attention the whole time
please show more of this kind of short movie.. intense.. ;) cheers..
I just wanna puch this lady I swear and nothing more. This movie wasn't scary but yes now my BP is high.
Very well done! Thanks!
I can't figure out what they are conveying can anyone help
Wow this was good, so REALISTIC
Realistic? I would've drove slowly around. Secondly, the woman's actions were completely unrealistic. However, it was a good short film.
I'm in AZ we have signs that say never stop or pick up any hitch hikers in the areas of any prison.
Besides if the cell reception is that good out in the woods they should have call the police and backed up as far as they could to watch him if they had to.
What bothers me is that many people might say the woman was right, but if they had a child with them inside the car everybody would agree that they shouldn't have taken so many risks. With that established, there was no child in the car, but there were *2 adults* whose lives are worth no less... so... at what age do we become expendable!?
excellent, original work.
This is entirely cinematoghraper talent ❤️
this is great, would love to get involved with sound post/composition on these projects
lmao i would have never even stopped
What a good short!!!!
Was the zoom done digitally or on set?
Really enjoyed it. Great acting. Nice subtle camera pans and I thought that the moment of his disappearance during the fight was really well done.
I would have liked more closure, but that’s just me.
Nice one
😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
Nah, Jake wouldn't have blamed himself at all if guy died from hypothermia.
WOW... THAT WAS REALLY GOOD!!!
Moral of the story . Don’t listen to the woman
No... just dont listen to THAT women.. her judgement is [very] fcked up .
Awesome 💓👌
Great film. Very professional in every way.
'Tis the Season...
Damn! That was really good. The tension. Very compelling. That open ending?? Nice job. Shit! 👍🏾
Incredible
Multiple guys likely escaped from a violent offense/mental ward at the prison. One or possibly of the guys from the mental ward/violent offense are after other locals in the area. Which is why you see the guy come out of the woods frantically calling for help, just moments after the mental guy suddenly goes into the woods. Just my take on it.
There is only one guy and the one at the end isn’t asking or screaming for help. The guy is slamming on the hood angry and is the same one at beginning.
I just knew she was going to get a surprise, I was hoping for it too hard. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Great short, I loved it.
Me too😅😅😅
That was good.
Amazing
Gosh...!
GREAT!
This is great
I think reverse would have worked better in that situation but who am I to judge lol
Should call it "Hit and Run"
Sound editing is good
🙏🏻🦋Thank you so much !!!!! Very nice a Beautiful !!!!! Thriller short Film !!!!!!! 😍
Why did they just not cross him initially? If you find a man who seems to be an unresponsive one middle of a road like that, what a common man is expected to do?
Absolutely great movie....love it!!
Dont take a shit and dont give a shit.period
Amazing. The build up better than the pay off.
I'm casually eating pringles
Well I didn't understand it. Could someone explain it to me please?
What you see is what you get
Well done! Loved it ❣👏👏👏🌹
(I betcha his wallet is in his jacket~)
🌙Stay 'safe' & be well, everyone! Blessed be~🌙
Could any of you kind people tell me what the piece of music is at the end credits? Its vaguely familiar and I can almost place it, but it doesn't say what it is.
Erik Satie: from "Gymnopedies"
Jump scares from the fucking wipers !!!
This couple make me freak up!!
Greatest ad for staying single
What's the name of the classical piece playing over the end credits?
erik satie - gnossienne #1
Ok. So, don't run over a harmless hobo. Hello, McFly.
Why did he run him over like that lol, what the hell is wrong with these 2 people
She said drive
Oh my God Pls don't get down or help anyone at night time
I liked it..👍👍
only downside was the jumpsacre
very very good way of doing the film, very very suspenseful, I like it, that''s all, they already did the help, it is enough
Seriously? If you’re worried, reach into the glovebox. Get your gun. Get out of the car. Give him your coat while the passenger calls the cops. Invite him in the car. He doesn’t respond, you gave him your coat, he’s warm. Wait for help to arrive. Focus. The end.
Out in the Cold at Night it's Scary out there...
I wasnt scared at all. But it was a good short film.
He is like Ben Affleck his voice and manerisms
I'm not stopping for shit...
Right I would have went around
Great short, but no man would let his girl go out there after she said she saw blood on him AND no girl would go out there to look for him... But looks great. Acted great.
I was on the edge all the tym😬
great build up to a let down
What the heck is wrong with her!?
Oh my God my heart is beating like saying to the lady that not to let her husband Go out and help the weirdo 👺👻
why do i know that end credits song? EriK Satie?
Hoo man ...really osm
Great suspense, thriller but if were in the situation, i will turn back stay away from any trouble might be thank you😘
Naw fam she doing way to much...like he said he already called the police and now he’s waiting what else can you do?
