Tip for asian buffet. They often have a salad bar with lettuce, olives, hard boiled eggs, cheese, and other keto friendly items. Eat the wonton soup, but don't get the wontons. Find and put some plain shrimp and beef in your bowl and add the stock from the soup. Now you have surf and turf soup that is not sugar laden. Keep a bowl of this broth... Things with that sugar coating you can wash off in a bowl of wonton soup broth, and then leave the bowl full of sugar at the end. Like really, wash your food like a little racoon. Pick all the veggies they have, even if they are mixed in other dishes, you can usually find some bok choy, green beans, mushrooms, and broccoli. Avoid the carrots and onions. Get a couple egg rolls and dissect them. discard the wrapper, the inside is very good. Eat some wings or skewered chicken. I love it when they have oysters, mussels, or baked fish on the buffet. Sometimes we have to do what we can do when eating out.

Major kudos to you Thomas- I binged on your videos, I want to adopt you - or the other way- if you need another Auntie or Granny - I got your back. Your story is heartwarming and sincere ( I have sat in that car, hiding eating) and your info well researched. I am believing that cleaning up my eating and losing 40 more lbs will get rid of the limp that I now have. This video was helpful in terms of Chinese food, but not a lot of other Asian foods. There’s a lot more to Vietnamese food than pho, and there were no Korean, Thai, or Japanese dishes mentioned here. Also, Asian cuisine has sugar in almost every dish. It’s not a lot, but it’s necessary to balance out strong salty or bitter flavors from other ingredients.

I am so happy you made this video, here are my two cents on the dishes discussed: the tofu in sweet & sour soup is not so good if we want to avoid soy, I'd rather have thin seaweed and egg flower soup instead w/out cornstarch, a much cleaner keto soup, no black bean sauce due to the possibly added sugar & corn starch (majority of sauces in Chinese cousine are made with cornstarch), pretty much now the chinese dish I would only eat out is the beef broccoli (some places marinate the beef with oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, cornstarch and cooking wine-dirty keto). Since being on keto, I started to enjoy cooking at home again.

      It makes the customer's "happy".
If you're not a customer because of the sugar, you may want to stop in one night and try to order food without sugar and leave if they can't accommodate you. Let them know that you have money and they are not gonna get it unless Low-Carb people are accommodated. Otherwise, they don't actually realize it.

There are many Filipino dishes that are low carb in their traditional recipes as long as you don't add rice, 3 of them are staples of my diet and you can mix them up a bit with your protiens. My 3 goto's are Tinola, Adobo and Sinigang na baboy (sour pork). Many variants of recipes you can search for on the tube.

I haven’t had Chinese take out in a very long time knowing how much sugar, msg, and cornstarch is used. Restaurant pho has lots of sugar and msg, unfortunately. I have dined out with my family and if I do order it, I skip the noodles, ask for more veggies and do not drink the broth 😂 Or, I bring my own kelp noodles 😂
I have also ordered a Vietnamese salad at the restaurant and asked for no sauce and added my own sauce. As for oyster sauce, I make my own and use it for my Vietnamese crispy seafood noodle (it can be done!).

Thank you making this video, Thomas. I also modified South East Asian food to be more keto friendly. Things like Rendang, Satay and Tom Yam are not just delicious but can be keto friendly if do it correctly. Just add more fresh raw vegetable on the side and I am good to go.
I only have question about tamarind. I use it alot of tamarind water in my cooking to give sour taste. If you can do some investigation on tamarind and other spices like cinnamon bark, cloves, star anise and cardamom please. Thank you and have a great day :)

Skip the fast food and find a local HMart or Asian market. Buy fried yellow croaker, mussels, bok choy, miso paste, kimchi, different mushrooms, coconut chunks, genmaicha tea and lots of seaweed. Not only keto but also packed with minerals, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory you can’t find in Western food.

Egg foo young is not breaded. It is a pourable egg batter, meaning the flour is incorporated with the eggs and veggies, not so easy to avoid in a restaurant, but very easy to make at home. Check out any recipe and skip the flour/cornstarch. Voilà!
