Tip for asian buffet. They often have a salad bar with lettuce, olives, hard boiled eggs, cheese, and other keto friendly items. Eat the wonton soup, but don't get the wontons. Find and put some plain shrimp and beef in your bowl and add the stock from the soup. Now you have surf and turf soup that is not sugar laden. Keep a bowl of this broth... Things with that sugar coating you can wash off in a bowl of wonton soup broth, and then leave the bowl full of sugar at the end. Like really, wash your food like a little racoon. Pick all the veggies they have, even if they are mixed in other dishes, you can usually find some bok choy, green beans, mushrooms, and broccoli. Avoid the carrots and onions. Get a couple egg rolls and dissect them. discard the wrapper, the inside is very good. Eat some wings or skewered chicken. I love it when they have oysters, mussels, or baked fish on the buffet. Sometimes we have to do what we can do when eating out.
Good timing. Taking a coworker for pho tomorrow and will be replacing my noodles for more veggies. Other keto friendly asian food options: 1) Hot Pot 2) Korean barbecue

SoCal has carne asada burritos. beef, clean quacamole, pico de gallo. add sour cream, open it up and eat just the inside with a fork. throw the tortilla away. It's dirty keto, but to go to a fast food mexican restaurant it will not throw you out of ketosis and tastes great!
As a Filipino keto practitioner, I'd personally like to thank you for suggesting arroz caldo using cauli rice. It's something I miss dearly since changing my WOE, yet subbing the rice with cauli never occurred to me.
Thomas DeLauer Thanks, Thomas. I’m a big fan of your work. I am also curious whether mung bean/black bean pasta might be a healthy substitute (in moderation) in conjunction with using zucchini pasta and shiritaki products in Italian dishes. Have a great day and keep up the informative work. Cheers!

Thomas thanks so much for uploading this!!! My husband and I wanted Chinese food Saturday night and I wanted something Keto. I've been following Keto carefully for 13 days and I've lost 7 pounds. Asian was always my favorite take out, but I no longer eat it. Added corn starch and sugar in most dishes. I checked my blood sugar once after hot & sour soup, it spiked really high.
Would love to see a Mexican food version of this! Thoughts on Soy Black Beans? Seems like it would be a great side to compliment any Mexican/Latin dish. Great Video my dudes.

I live in China. I sometimes eat out. Hotpot is really the best Keto option. Also there is a roast fish. Also Roast duck is great!! I like Peking Duck with no sauce and pancakes. Egg drop soup is awesome too. Also in China they have a dish called tomato and egg. Or bitter melon and egg. The Chinese food is very different here than back.
Yesssss this video is very helpful. Thanks! Oh and the added bonus here, it’s the arrozcaldo (using cauliflower rice)! Never even thought of that! Thanks again 😊
This video was helpful in terms of Chinese food, but not a lot of other Asian foods. There’s a lot more to Vietnamese food than pho, and there were no Korean, Thai, or Japanese dishes mentioned here. Also, Asian cuisine has sugar in almost every dish. It’s not a lot, but it’s necessary to balance out strong salty or bitter flavors from other ingredients.

I love your channel. Sorry to say every Asian food or sauce has sugar in it. Especially pho. I wished it didn't. That why we cook everything at home with monk fruit sugar. One good dish is the steam salt chicken with ginger sauce on side.
What are your thoughts on sushi rice? We've heard that the resistant starch from the rice being cooked then cooled can be good for your gut and microbiome!

@@bobgnarlyxl the cooling and cooking with fat preparation only increases the amount of resistant starch (~15-45% i think?). Theres still quite a lot of digestible carbs in there.

I would really appreciate a video that hits on keto for travel. I travel 5 days a week for work to a different state. Anyone who has lived this lifestyle knows health is a very difficult thing to maintain. I've been glued to these videos for ths last month but could use a little extra direction for the traveling business person who doesnt have the convenience of grocery shopping or cooking their own food.
I love Pho and order it often. I don't eat sodium - I'm super sensitive to salts. We research any Asian Restaurant before going because of the issues. Great information as usual.
Great video for Asian food options. Would love to see a video on some Sauce & Toppings Substitutes that still have a nice or even semi sweet taste but are Keto friendly.
Wow that black bean sauce ' 짜장' in Korean. is a game changer. That sauce makes anything taste amazing and its hard to get sick of eating. Thanks for this awesome video
I am so happy you made this video, here are my two cents on the dishes discussed: the tofu in sweet & sour soup is not so good if we want to avoid soy, I'd rather have thin seaweed and egg flower soup instead w/out cornstarch, a much cleaner keto soup, no black bean sauce due to the possibly added sugar & corn starch (majority of sauces in Chinese cousine are made with cornstarch), pretty much now the chinese dish I would only eat out is the beef broccoli (some places marinate the beef with oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, cornstarch and cooking wine-dirty keto). Since being on keto, I started to enjoy cooking at home again.
It makes the customer's "happy". If you're not a customer because of the sugar, you may want to stop in one night and try to order food without sugar and leave if they can't accommodate you. Let them know that you have money and they are not gonna get it unless Low-Carb people are accommodated. Otherwise, they don't actually realize it.
There are many Filipino dishes that are low carb in their traditional recipes as long as you don't add rice, 3 of them are staples of my diet and you can mix them up a bit with your protiens. My 3 goto's are Tinola, Adobo and Sinigang na baboy (sour pork). Many variants of recipes you can search for on the tube.
This was great. I would love to see other types of restaurants. I would love to see Italian, because I don't think it's possible to stay keto at an Italian restaurant. (Keep up the great work)
Thomas....Hispanic foods! Holidays are coming and that means our families will gather to make traditional Portuguese and Mexican dishes. One I will surely miss will be eating tamales and I would like a Keto friendly version of Tamales, please!

I haven’t had Chinese take out in a very long time knowing how much sugar, msg, and cornstarch is used. Restaurant pho has lots of sugar and msg, unfortunately. I have dined out with my family and if I do order it, I skip the noodles, ask for more veggies and do not drink the broth 😂 Or, I bring my own kelp noodles 😂 I have also ordered a Vietnamese salad at the restaurant and asked for no sauce and added my own sauce. As for oyster sauce, I make my own and use it for my Vietnamese crispy seafood noodle (it can be done!).
It's funny that everything you highlighted Is stuff I found myself gravitating towards naturally. Aside from Egg Drop Soup which is totally keto but you have to know what they are adding...
Forgot to add.. other sauces in asian cuisine - hot chili oil, fish sauce with spiced vinegar and citrus, pickling juice with peppers. Thai curries with coconut milk and herbs.
Ahh and of course, I love Hoisin, plum, and duck sauce... I think I only have Hoisin now.... I really love them. I love Pho too, you can buy/make the broth and use zero noodles which are shirataki-based.
Thank you making this video, Thomas. I also modified South East Asian food to be more keto friendly. Things like Rendang, Satay and Tom Yam are not just delicious but can be keto friendly if do it correctly. Just add more fresh raw vegetable on the side and I am good to go. I only have question about tamarind. I use it alot of tamarind water in my cooking to give sour taste. If you can do some investigation on tamarind and other spices like cinnamon bark, cloves, star anise and cardamom please. Thank you and have a great day :)
Many times over I say thank you for making this video! I am so nervous about what to eat when going out for dinner anymore. Mostly because of all the hidden ingredients that we are unaware of in our foods.
Skip the fast food and find a local HMart or Asian market. Buy fried yellow croaker, mussels, bok choy, miso paste, kimchi, different mushrooms, coconut chunks, genmaicha tea and lots of seaweed. Not only keto but also packed with minerals, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory you can’t find in Western food.
You just answered so many of my questions!!.... thank you! I love chinese food but was afraid to try it with all the corn starch for thickening...... absolutely love your videos !!
I'm lucky that I live in a small town with a large number of low carb and keto eaters. The Asians caught on and provided options like cauliflower rice. Keto fried rice is yum!
This is good -- thanks! I didn't know you could order the dishes without the sauce. I think if we all start asking for cauliflower rice, eventually, restaurants will start having it as an option.
Italian and Mexican food please, @Thomas DeLauer!! I actually use veggie spirals (made from zucchini and other squash) in place of pasta when cooking Italian at home. Meatballs go well with it, but leave out bread crumbs. But I am totally stuck regarding Mexican at home, other than making fajita meat mixtures, but not sure how to replace tortillas, etc...
Please take a look at Korean food. SO much sugar in every marinade and sauce I am flummoxed how to keep enjoying my fav Korean BBQ and banchan! I can’t live on kimchi alone!
My wife and I just had went to a Chinese restaurant last night knowing the keto would be broken!! now I will go back with full knowledge thanks Thomas!
Egg foo young is not breaded. It is a pourable egg batter, meaning the flour is incorporated with the eggs and veggies, not so easy to avoid in a restaurant, but very easy to make at home. Check out any recipe and skip the flour/cornstarch. Voilà!
Thanks for the tips on eating out. I enjoy the occasional break from cooking for my family too. And like you said, a lot of these dishes can be prepared at home but sometimes we like to get out the kitchen. That's my office. My family should make me a Keto Apron for all my hard work. Can't complain cause the food is delicious.

Every one of my local Chinese joints use sugar in all of their sauces. :(
It makes the customer's "happy".
If you're not a customer because of the sugar, you may want to stop in one night and try to order food without sugar and leave if they can't accommodate you. Let them know that you have money and they are not gonna get it unless Low-Carb people are accommodated. Otherwise, they don't actually realize it.
Not even sauce. They marinate all meats with sugar
Just ask them to leave it out.
Live these types of videos! Cauliflower arroz caldo?!? Brilliant!!!
Now do a video on Mexican food!
This was great. I would love to see other types of restaurants. I would love to see Italian, because I don't think it's possible to stay keto at an Italian restaurant. (Keep up the great work)
Any restaurants you have in mind?
How big of a challenge do you want? I say this, go with olive garden, and for bonus points no use of zoodles. (Go big or go home)
Carrabas
Thomas....Hispanic foods! Holidays are coming and that means our families will gather to make traditional Portuguese and Mexican dishes. One I will surely miss will be eating tamales and I would like a Keto friendly version of Tamales, please!
Hoisin and plum sauce are so freaking delicious 🙁
PF changs hot and sour soup (bowl) net carbs: 60 Beef and broccoli carbs: 41 Northern style ribs (4): 8 Best to go with the sea bass, Salmon, pepper steak, Kung Pao steamed or steamed Buddah's feast www.pfchangs.com/nutrition/menu-nutritionals
Thank you so much for your videos! I have missed Asian food for 4years, appreciate you making real life videos
Please do more on common asian ingredients such as black/white fungus, fermented black bean, miso, chinese herb etc. Much appreciated
I haven’t had Chinese take out in a very long time knowing how much sugar, msg, and cornstarch is used. Restaurant pho has lots of sugar and msg, unfortunately. I have dined out with my family and if I do order it, I skip the noodles, ask for more veggies and do not drink the broth 😂 Or, I bring my own kelp noodles 😂
I have also ordered a Vietnamese salad at the restaurant and asked for no sauce and added my own sauce. As for oyster sauce, I make my own and use it for my Vietnamese crispy seafood noodle (it can be done!).
Tamari is the solution to Keto soya sauce! It's gluten free soya sauce, without the wheat. And it tastes amazing!
It's funny that everything you highlighted Is stuff I found myself gravitating towards naturally. Aside from Egg Drop Soup which is totally keto but you have to know what they are adding...
I’m not sure if you realize that Black Bean sauce is made from fermented Black Soy Beans not from Black Turtle beans.
Please do a video explaining whether the keto diet is safe for children. Why or why not? Thanks!
Thanks for including Filipino food. I LOVE arroz caldo, especially on a cold day.
My go to channel for eating out. Thanks for this
Great video! I noticed Thai food wasn't mentioned which is my favorite
May need it's own video
To go Pho, hold the rice noodles then use miracle noodles instead. Delicious, not missing a thing!😋😋😋
Many times over I say thank you for making this video! I am so nervous about what to eat when going out for dinner anymore. Mostly because of all the hidden ingredients that we are unaware of in our foods.
You’re welcome! It’s good to be educated on wat you’re eating. Thanks for watching!
You just answered so many of my questions!!.... thank you! I love chinese food but was afraid to try it with all the corn starch for thickening...... absolutely love your videos !!
in regards to more cultural dishes to investigate, possible to create a video geared towards Korean food or popular Korean dishes?? Many thanks!
Many Korean food can easily be made into keto ;-)
Arrowroot starch is a good substitute for cornstarch, especially if you are paleo or want to avoid gmo's
I'm lucky that I live in a small town with a large number of low carb and keto eaters. The Asians caught on and provided options like cauliflower rice. Keto fried rice is yum!
Cauliflower Kim Chee Rice
I thank God for you. Sharing your information has helped me a lot .
This is good -- thanks! I didn't know you could order the dishes without the sauce. I think if we all start asking for cauliflower rice, eventually, restaurants will start having it as an option.
They will have to listen to what the customer wants.
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial But they won't know unless we make a point of asking....
Excellent information. Great strategies for avoiding carbs yet enjoying Asian food. Thanks!
Please take a look at Korean food. SO much sugar in every marinade and sauce I am flummoxed how to keep enjoying my fav Korean BBQ and banchan! I can’t live on kimchi alone!
Great idea for a future video!
I've always been curious if Galbitang is safe to eat as well, minus the glass noodles.
Awesome content Thomas!! Thanks so much! Also loved your podcast with Ben greenfield!!
Thanks for listening to it!
My wife and I just had went to a Chinese restaurant last night knowing the keto would be broken!! now I will go back with full knowledge thanks Thomas!
Awesome! Glad it’s going to help you stick to keto, you’re welcome!
Egg foo young is not breaded. It is a pourable egg batter, meaning the flour is incorporated with the eggs and veggies, not so easy to avoid in a restaurant, but very easy to make at home. Check out any recipe and skip the flour/cornstarch. Voilà!
Tks Thomas. This video is just what I need. I m Chinese n it's hard to get by doing keto. Just started keto 27oct2019... 💪
O.O
I can haz bean sprouts?
Speaking of Black Beans...
I was watching *Black Sheep Keto* the other day and he held up a can of Organic Black Soy Beans!
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat???!!!!
He made chili with it and Baked Beans.
Hohmygod.
Please look into this and give us the skinny!
Thanks, Thomas!
You Rock!
