  • In her transition from male to female, Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu found acceptance and strength in her Hawaiian culture. And she has been an inspiring kamu (teacher) of the Hawaiian culture her whole life. Among Hina’s greatest accomplishments: developing the production “A Place in the Middle,” one of the most widely used resources on Hawaiian culture at PBS Learning Media.

My favorite part is when she says "go eat lunch with your friends" it touches my heart. Being made fun of and segregated at lunch period is what a lot of glbt youth experience. Sitting eating lunch alone is not a good feeling at all.🌋😘🤗🐠🦈🐡🐙🐳🐟🐬🐋🐚🦀🦐🦑🦋🦋🦋🌻🌻🌻💮💮🌺🌺🌴🌴❤️💓💖🖤

Auwe, Corey! Kumu Hina... not Kuma. Kumu means teacher, while kuma means mouse in Hawaiian or bear in Japanese. This is a most unfortunate oops.

The wahine (woman) gave thanks to kumu Hina by chanting in Hawaiian culture what is known as Oli Mahalo. It is our cultural way to mahalo one another or give thanks. Kumu Hina then chanted back giving her aloha.
      Oli Mahalo
      Uhola ʻia ka makaloa lā
Pū ʻai i ke aloha ā
Kū kaʻi ʻia ka hā loa lā
      Pāwehi mai nā lehua
Mai ka hoʻokuʻi a ka hālāwai lā
      Mahalo e Ke Akua
Mahalo e nā kūpuna lā, ʻeā
      Mahalo me ke aloha lā
      Mahalo me ke aloha lā
The makaloa mat has been unfurled
In love, (food is/was shared) we share
The great breath has been exchanged
Honored and adorned is the Lehua
      From zenith to horizon
Gratitude and thanks to our Akua
Gratitude and thanks to our beloved ancestors
      Gratitude, admiration, thanks, and love
To all who are present, both seen and unseen
