- First of all, one thing to remember while in Puerto Rico, is that "IT ALWAYS RAINS... A LOT" Now about this video, when things don't go as planned, all you can do is figure out another way around the obstacles, find a new path, open a new door, there is always a solution, and whatever happens, keep sailing the boat!

Your videos of Uma under sail look like you choose a great boat for sailing! She looks like she is dancing across the waves!
Guys, thanks for all the hours spent waiting on uploads, and all the miles walked searching for internet. Know that all the work that the videos require is appreciated by all 31,977 of us. Thanks for what you do and thanks for sharing the adventure. You're wonderful storytellers! :)))
Wow, thanks for putting how many subs there were four years ago. They've grown over tenfold since then and done so much. I'm bingeing all the videos now.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Love these two! lol!
I'm still binge-watching. Almost halfway there. It's been "tons of fun" watching you two. Got to go. 😉
if you cut a short hard bristle brush in half and screw to the inside of the roller bracket it will save you time cleaning the chain
Just discovered your channel a month ago...outstanding!
Binging as fast as we can from start to current posts...really good stuff...so humble, skillful, and entertaining, especially the DIY ingenuity and craftmanship.
We sailed from PNW to NZ and back in a 37' sailboat with our kids, thanks to Yves Gélinas, but we are now strictly armchair sailors in our old age.
After watching you cover multiple open passages , we can hardly wait for the "Ah Ha, finally, where has this been all our lives?" moment when you start using the Capehorn!
We admire the fact that you actually sail a lot. Respect!
Thank you for showing all the boat chores that a lot of people don't talk about or show, like cleaning the chain and I really like the way you handle all the chores yourself. I have really enjoyed catching up with your travels. Keep it up and have fun
D
Don't know where you are but public libraries are a great option. No hassles, no cost, no coffee. Identify the bugs there too.
Who on earth is more positive than Kika? She is constantly painting silver linings on life's clouds. :-)
@@jonothandoeser Makes me want to marry a girl from Haiti.
Talking about scrapers we attached a sail batten as a handle extention which we managed later to prebend to fit our hull curvature. It is a game changer. I reach under the hull all the way to the keel without diving. I can also reach the bottom of the keel with same extended handle scrapper!
the work you did on the interior of your boat has proven to be amazing. its is different from stock interiors with your custom work.....really turned out great....
Yeah their sense of space and function is very different from most boats.
You're good people. Thanks for what you do.
Wow I forget uploading takes so long! I appreciate it 💗 my son is with his Dad for summer hols so longer than regular and your videos are distracting me in a very positive way. Thank you 💗💗🌼🌸🌼
Love the bury the rail camera shot
Dale here bin watching ur videos trying to catch up but in one word
U two are amazing from the ❤️
Ok, that's the first time I've seen anyone tack up a sidewalk! Always enjoy watching your adventures. ;-) I've had great luck with McDonald's wife when travelling. I don't eat there so I have been asked to leave from time to time. ;-)
Re the scraper, we use a drywall applicator, three times wider than your original scraper, flexible, and if you bend the corners up a bit , won't gouge your hull.
I don't know how I missed this video when I was bingeing.
Ouch! Feel your pain, both the bugs and the walking! Lovely and quite below deck! Amazing improvement, well done Dan and Kika! Love seeing Uma setting sail, she seems to sail very well! Sorry your motor stopped working! Well done scraping the bottom clean but those bugs sound nasty!
Another great video on the Uma journey. Your 'brand' of practical amateur sailing I find easy to relate to.
Thank you, very interesting, great footage, great story telling of turning negatives into positives. Live is a constant stream of Work Arounds. Some people get pissed or annoyed, others enjoy the process. Is funny how a video can be a sailing video but the story telling within a video will be a topic altogether different. Good job editing. Look forward to your next video. You are developing a great body of work.
Awesome video! You guys are the real deal...LOVE IT!
We appreciate all of your efforts in uploading your adventures. Than you.
If u sandwich the chain between the heads of a broom it will scrub it as u bring it in. all u have to do is spray water on it at the same time. I would also recommend the heavy bristles (street) brooms.
FYI... Be Safe, I hope you Always wear Earplugs when Cleaning the Boat Bottom. Riley of SLV had to go get Medical Help after cleaning his Boat bottom. They Found a Very Small Crab in his Ear. Riley and Elayna Always wear Earplugs Now when Scraping the Bottom.
Yep, Those little critters can be nasty if they get deep into your ears!!
MrDenis7p great pick up, earplugs are a must...
MrDenis7p sailing La vagabond are spoiled little brats.
@@templarknight2400 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Good job on the "quieting" !! It's super annoying when things are creaking and banging!! Thanks for including us in your adventures!!
We appreciate all your efforts to produce your videos. Thank You.
Hi You two I found your videos today and I'm enjoying your adventure . My wife and I live in PR and the DR . I had to laught when you said about the internet
it was real slow before Maria I. I hope you two come back
What will you do if your anchor won't break free? In Montauk NY we often anchor in the rocks. We fasten the chain securely to the far end. (That would be the half circle on your anchor.). The anchor chain is held lightly to the shaft with twine and a little more securely, with more twine to where you have the anchor attached now. If the anchor won't come free the twine breaks and I get my anchor and chain back.
The downside is that the twine could break when you are asleep. If you have an anchor drag alarm then, no problem.
you make sailing look fun. I know it's not always easy but sure appreciate your sharing! 😉🤗
nice vid - and really like to fact that You always try to go for sail instead of using the motor - all the best and fair winds.
I would have sworn Puerto Rico was part of the United States ("an unincorporated territory of the United States."), right? ;-)
Not complaining, just commenting. It's the isolation, I swear, I just have a need to communicate - even if it iis not worth saying.
"are everywhere and they bite and they hurt" - I learned many decades ago, back when I had access to a boat, to scrape the bottom when the tide was changing or in some other current - you want it to flush!
Keep on fighting the good fight, you people (both sides of the screen) rock.
Sam
I love you're videos! I always look forward to your new ones!
You two really should have life lines.
Great video, Thanks! Cheers!
You are amazing awesome! Love you both and your positive spirit!Best, Paul
So awesome the windlass is working so well.
Next time you can go to the Sheraton Hotel across the street from the San Juan Bay Marina.
Love the vid. Thank you for sharing.
We were in that same anchorage and crossed the same streets in 2016. We got our spinnaker fixed at Fahardo, and anchored in the dark.
Probably late to the party but you could mount a deck brush head upside down forward of your windlass to "prescrub" the chain when you raise anchor.
loved it . terrific video , thanks Phil
Thanks for sharing.
I think the critters in the water might be Krill.
Sometimes when diving near Great Yarmouth (North Sea) I bring up a few thousand of them clinging to every fold in my dry suit.
Merci pour cette journee
Great video guys. Fair Winds. JC
Another great vid
I’m wondering why you don’t have lifelines and what is the length of your boat? I certainly am enjoying all the videos, taking my time to savour each one and getting two or three a day viewed. This information I’m requesting may well have been covered in a previous video, just that I missed it. Keep on sailing and smiling. I for one certainly smiling as you are sailing. Cheers!
Good video guys!
I used to go to the same Starbucks on the way to Playa Condado every day!!! Great videos.
Thanks.
I ran into those bugs in the water while in Belize and Costa Rica. The locals there called them water roaches....haha.
Nice video guys!
Very nice!
The wifi there reminds me of aol in the 90s 😂 love the videos!!!
The amount of feet shots in this step is approaching Tarantino levels.
great video
I never go into the water in a marina/harbor, it's just too dirty.
I hear you on that Wifi. Our marina kind of sucks. Takes about 8 hours for a 10 minute video.
Bars might have better wi-fi than Starbucks.
Dan, why not invent some kind of scrubber before the anchor bow roller. ?Golfers have the club brushes that semi-automatically remove grass stains from the club faces
And if you have the technology you could add a hopper full of water that renses off the remaining mud
a spring loaded swing arm that comes out from under the bow up to the chain so it can be swung out of the way after
Love the Abu from the Simpsons impression on the end hahaha 😂.
If the Starbucks wi-fi is down, just go to one of the other 4 Starbucks across the street.
Another great video! Loving catching up with your whole adventure. Still a way to go to catch up to real time 2023 🤣 I'm intrigued by the coloured keys on your laptop - are they to assist with dyslexia, by any chance?
Reminds me when I was younger I had a Jeep playing around in the mountains broken throttle cable stuck a string through the firewall and got home with a string hook to my throttle
Thanks! Love your videos! Got my wife and me inspired...Next time in PR... Don't forget, Isabela ,Aguadilla, ** Rincon , Boqueron, Cabo Rojo and Parguera, Lajas... From North to South, all on the West Side... (About Internet speed and Uploading: Theres is high speed internet at Piloto 51 with 1 gigabyte symmetrical speeds in Old San Juan and maybe more places - it was diff for me to find the name of the place on Google, did not remember) ... Another thing - The bottom of the boat could've been cleaned at a few clear water cays near the NE.... Maybe Icacos or Palomino or others... You could've gotten an ear infection in that Old San Juan Bay... : )
Thanks for the effort you both put into making these videos. I don't see any jacklines or harness. Do you not use them?
I am glade you enjoyed PR my hometown,
but you really enjoy Flamingo beach
Sailing past those rocks at night would have been sketchy. Good call waiting for daylight. We hate bottom scrubbing bugs!
All those little sea critters and whatever in the water. hehehe Thats why I have a dry suit
One minute of every video is dedicated to frolicking about
process of finding issues and rectifying never stops, but the journey to rectification is a beautiful one, keep it up,
by the way what happened to your auto pilot??
Hello to S/V Uma.........I enjoy your efforts. Would you please update us on your Aten cold plate and it's effectiveness. Thanks a bunch and be safe !
I hope you guys have a comcast login. You can find those hotspots everywhere there is a comcast housing/customer.
Now that you have been out and about for a while, how do you feel that the copper bottom paint has worked out? When you redo the bottom will you go the same route?
The biting sea bugs might be a species of amphipoda or "sea fleas": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphipoda
Great vid, good to see real sailing.
I see you have a boom arrester (?) but never use it?
+mick mccrohon Only when we plan on jibing a lot, in rough weather, at night, in the rain.... no, we use it sometimes, but on short downwind runs its just not needed. Especially if we're hand steering. It only really works in 20+ kts of wind anyway. Anything less and you have to push the boom over by hand.
Those little shrimp things can get in your ear, man. Careful. That's a pretty torturous experience. Ask me how I know.
😨
I really like your videos - I have the same plan as you have - to buy a boat and "cut the lines" so I cross the fingers for all ppl brave to live the same way :) I have one question regarding Puerto Rico. A few days ago I've heard in the news that Puerto Rico is going to bancrupt cause of very high debt, Did you notice anything (except not working wifi) when staying there? Does it affects anyhow turists and sailors (eg. not working ATMs or anything else)?
+Sail Addicted honestly, didn't notice much. But we also don't know what it was like in the past. Sad that the US taxes PR more than it gives back in benifits. Seems like a great way to bankrupt a country.
A hint: McDonald wifi usually work better than Starbucks.
How slow speed did you have when it took 12h to upload?
Cheers from Sweden
Ha! Seems like you guys left San Juan on a Sunday! All the cruise ships are there...
What?!?! motor died!?!...
I know you guys love walking but some foldable bikes for the Christmas wish list?
How did you screw the conduit to the mast to prevent it from clanging inside the mast?
Someone needs to invent a roomba to clean the bottom of the boat and that anchor chain... Just saying... Cheers guys!
Hmm I guess you don't watch the CZcams ads, I've been brainwashed by the bottom cleaning roomba thinghy.
I haven't seen those... what are they called? I might be seeing different ads then you.
I haven't seen the ads either but just looked up the keel crab.
two questions.
Ok first let me say I love yalls channel. I want to sell my house, car, harley and do the same. but it's a challenge to sail (pun intended) the idea to my partner of 7 years.
1. When you put your winless up you drilled a hole for the chain and used PVC pipe as a guide. (great idea) but does that allow additional water into the boat?
2. And this may be a stupid question, but what are the horn looking things sticking up out of the deck?
ok 3 how did you learn or find all the rules of sailing internationally, (Flags, lights, etc) and did you do any ASA training to learn to sail or has it been just fly by the Sails on Uma?
You inspire me to want to do something different. I have always be in love with sailboats and wanted one for so many years. Seeing y'all (yes I'm from Texas) enjoy the true meaning of life and each other even with the hard times and rough moments y'all have faced it is just a dream. I hate the 9-5 daily grind of fighting traffic, office life, deadlines, etc. I hope someday I will be able to join yall on the sea and meet in some port.
Tip: Earplugs while scraping the hull prevents nasty and painful ear infection...
Hi Guys, I have to comment on the miraculas transition the inside of your boat has taken on. It looks as if it's almost a new boat on the inside with everything painted so nicely and clean! You two have done a wonderful job taken what I would almost consider a wreck (because of the keel) and turned it into a great boat! One question though, do you miss not having lifelines? I was thinking of replacing my wire ones with continuous welded ss tubing? Then again, I have really wide side decks that are pretty easy to transit, so on the other hand I was thinking about eliminating them altogether along with the leaks that come along with them! Can you please pass along your thoughts on the matter? Thanks!Bill S. s/v ODIN
+spinnaker5514 Thanks! We love the inside too! As for lifelined....we'll ours were crap so we tossed them, we're keeping the bow and stern rails though because we plan to add a ss rail soon. Much better than "lifelines" which are really just meant to hold your laundry when it's drying.
Many ports state no sailing in navigation channels because steady wind is not always available and the port authorities want all vessels under motor power so any accidents can be avoided immediately.
+MidnightVisions I guess we'll avoid those ports. Also, with the electric motor, power is instantly available by simply pushing on the throttle. We've used it to avoid mishaps a few times when sailing in confined waters.
its not about avoiding those ports, its about saving money. If a port authority thinks your sailing when you should be motoring, they may issue a fine. Just saying the port charts will say what areas allow sails to be up and which part is motoring only. If your engine is not working and you need to sail in, contact the marina or port authority ahead that way your covered. Do first and beg forgiveness later does not usually work in ports of non English speaking countries.
Ahoy Umans. So when will you do your first livestream? You should of done one from the coffee shop while waiting for the video to upload. Get twice the bang for the time invested. BTW there is a program called Handbrake that can pack the video to greatly reduce upload times. Might be worth looking at. TFS stay safe.
+Grandpa's Farm Goes Sailing Yes! We want to do a live stream soon. Also download Handbrake. Johan and Malin from RAN recommended the same program. Next time we're on fast wifi, we'll have to do just that. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers!
The bugs die if you use sweet water ... You can also use cotton in your ears.. Always use a wetsuit.
The guy that sets up pay for use wifi and gives away coffee will make a killing!
hi guys looking at the yacht sailing you do not have a kicker or vang looks doggie without that.
Yes watching the boom waving around like that especially downwind you definitely need a vang. The difference will amaze you, the mainsail will be a lot easier to handle and so much safer.
Check out all the Mercury agents in the world, then you can plan your route. Good luck.
Morning guys. I have a question for you about your engine. I saw the video where you replaced it with an electric motor. How is that working for you? What kind of motor was it? We would love to hear the details about it. I want to do some experimentation with electric motors to see if it can be made practical for everyone.
+PelenTan thanks for your interest, its a motor from a forklift that we used to make our own. We will soon put up an update about the motor, but in the mean time, we have a page on our website explaining everything about it. If you visit our site (sailinguma.com) you can find the page called electro-beke. Hope it helps. Cheers.
the engine problem could be in the carbonator.....I've had a few engines and the carberator is often at the heart of the problem....I would buy a carb kit and break it down...spray out all passages...install a new fuel pin and float...then reassemble with new gaskets....good luck...see you in St. Thomas in july.....
That would be a first. An electric motor with carb problems.
Why don’t you have a wind generator on mast top to supplement solar cells?
Nice vid. Those little bugs you mentioned also get in your ears... you might want to use earplugs next time.
yep
What are they?
No squeaks !😋
So what happened to the electric engine??
our batteries sulfated :(
Personally I decided to avoid SB’s as it turned out to belong to Nestle’ but as a WiFi spot to load up vids I completely understand the practical aspect
it is very hard if ?there is no auto pilot .
