LR4 Off Road Trailer Hitch? We Build Our Own

- We have a trip coming up that we will be using the Budget LR4 on. It requires a little heavy towing.
We had a little cheap bolt on hitch that came with the LR4 mounted up, but I decided that was not going to be up to the task.
So what better time to fabricate our own high clearance off road style hitch. We finally got to use all the tools of the little fab area in the new shop. Exciting times.
Let me know what you think of the hitch in the comments.
The high clearance hitches that I am aware of.

You're so smart!
Excellent
Appreciate that!
To those concerned about knocking your knees, just add a TerraFirma spare tire carrier and you won’t be able to get close enough to hit your knees, but then you’ll be smacking your shoulder cutting that right rear corner; just stay with the Subaru 😎
Love watching you build stuff for the LR3/LR4! Good work as always!
Appreciate you following along. I enjoy playing with this thing!
Great I will have to change my hitch as I have the same one on a Disco 3 love watching your channel keep up the great work
Aww finally you get to build something with the shop tools and not have to worry about where what and why lol
Such a nice feeling not running around everywhere with my head cut off.
Unfortunately, now I just have myself to blame when I get distracted and don’t finish stuff haha.
Hey found your channel brother, talked to you this morning. great content, even better doggo, also glad to see somebody check the torque on spacers.
Hey I appreciate your help more than you know!
Never mind I just bought a Safari Gard. Thanks
I think that looks like a solid choice as well.
I was thinking of building something similar to this a few years ago. Then I realized I would bash my knees on it every time I walked around the back of the LR4. I decided to stay with the stock hitch and just smash into rocks instead. Looks good though.
Compromise either way haha. The nice thing about the factory one is it is super quick to remove. So at least you can pull it off with ease.
Should paint it blaze orange and stick a flag on it haha.
Great job Joe! That is an awesome piece of fabrication. So satisfying to have all your kit where you need it....makes the job sooooo much easier.
Appreciate that! It is a good feeling to have most of the stuff right at hand again.
I want one...love it
Thanks, it has been working great!
How much to build me one? @@LostCauseRanch
Really, would you build me one for 500 dollars? I’ll pay for shipping to Shreveport, La.
If the original is called the plow......does that make yours the knee knocker?😂😂😂
Another great enjoyable video as always.
I can just feel it now haha.
I was considering painting it blaze orange.
Appreciate you watching as always!
@@LostCauseRanch Always looking out for your video's and have the notification bell ticked for them coming out.
Oh all the best from the UK.
Awesome! Hopefully I’ll keep popping out stuff you enjoy. Thanks.
This is something too sell!!
I would dread the liability.
I’m not even sure how you would handle that on a small scale. I remember our insurance for the repair shop specifically called out not even installing trailer hitches without a special rider for it.
It was a blast to build though. Love this kind of thing.
Looks sweet dude
Appreciate that! Love building this type of stuff.
Thanks for following along as always!
Awesome workmanship well done!
Appreciate that! This is my kind of fun.
@@LostCauseRanch I’ve still the original one I still like the fact it can be removed!!
Maybe some button heads or countersunk bolts on the bottom that would be the cherry on top. It looks good. PS it will still plow. The one on my jeep is higher and tight and I still find ways to bury it in creek beds haha. Great design!
I like countersunk idea.
Oh it definitely will still drag some stuff I’m sure. Better than the plastic bumper haha.
Nice project! It figures that the first chance you get to use the band saw and the blade breaks. 🙄
BTW, nice flowery gardeny welding gloves. 😆
Seems about right in the blade haha. Lasted about three seconds.
I have the ultimate in personal protective equipment don’t I?
I was hoping the flower pattern would prevent me losing them. That obviously worked well.
Awesome job as the new hitch looks better than the Original Factory option. With regards the super safety gloves, to resolve your problem do as I do and have several pairs dotted around the workshop, that way you should never be too far away from a pair LOL 😂. Keep up the great work.😎👍
I only have one flower pair though haha, rare. The others are just pink and blue haha.
Even better to have multiple colours around the workshop, especially nice bright colours LOL 😎😂👍@@LostCauseRanch
@@pgtips6143 I have lady sized hands so I get all the funky colors.
looks like a functional copy of the Mitch Hitch, which is made in Australia, and at the $US to $AU exchange rate the Mitch Hitch is probably an attractive purchase for someone in the US.
$800
@@lukequisenberry8178 Wow, actually they are now $730 AUD, but that's still only $490 US.
I'd just put a piece of reflective tape on the tube joint so it looked like you planned it and it just might save your knees once in a while.
I’m guessing I’ll be pulling it on and off depending on whether I’ll be towing, it’s only a few minute job to do at this point.
But it is definitely solid enough for your knee to feel it haha.
Put a little bumper in the hitch. That will keep those annoying cars with drivers who follow too close off your plastic bumpers. A hitch sticking out has saved me twice as the cars never reach the body. Good job. What did you bend that thick steel with?
Needs one of those Weathertech ones. This one would definitely destroy a grille as is. I’m not sure I will leave it in all the time, it’s simple enough to pull off.
I have access to a couple shops with big press brakes.
You really are a very talented fabricator and designer Joe!
How about marketing them and making them to order?
Thanks for following along as always! I’m not sure I would want the liability on selling them. My insurance company was always a stickler on even installing hitches in the repair shop.
@@LostCauseRanch - That’s really too bad. I was ready to send my down payment. Seriously, I was ready to send you money for one. I’ll just keep the cash in my toolbox for now. Just in case you change your mind. 😎
@@kduke4169 I’m going to look into what it is going to take to make it happen.
Super cool job man! How much do you want for it? Seriously do you sell it?
Brother can you build one? And how much will cost please that is so nice please your videos are so awesome
I'm exploring the possibility, I'm looking into the liability side of things.
I'd buy this from you in a heartbeat!!! available?
I’m contemplating making a small run of them.
I'm 100% interested in purchasing this from you!! @@LostCauseRanch
Would you make this for someone and if so how much would you charge for one?
As long as its not $200 plus I’ll buy one 😅
Haha. I think I only have like 20 hours into it. Should be able to do that. 🤣
But in all honesty I would be terrified of what the liability and insurance is for making hitches for the public.
@@LostCauseRanch I’ll sign a liability waiver, Im dead serious😂
It would end up being well over that $200 mark unfortunately as I'm not set up for production work like that. The Safari Gard, Rhino and Mitch Hitch are all priced reasonably considering the materials and time going into them along with the low quantity of demand. But I'm not all too keen on the liability of selling something like this though haha, would have to get lawyers and insurance involved and who wants to do that haha.
If there was a large enough run to get some of the pieces outsourced would be the only way to get anywhere below those guys price wise. But unfortunately I'm doubtful there would be the demand needed for the large quantity. They are fairly priced in my opinion.
Who knows, maybe this one will be available someday. (Maybe a steel rear bumper build in the future).
@@LostCauseRanch or you could just offer the plans on dimensions and angles on welding them up and leave it to the owners to do it themselves.
I'd weld those nuts on the outside if there's clearance to undo the bolts from the other side.
There is not enough room up top to feed the bolt through. It has to be slid in at an angle through the oval hole before the plates are up to get it in. Would be nice to have those nuts welded on that bottom plate though.
I’m gonna ask the obvious question. How much will one of these set a guy back and can a guy get one?
I’m going to look into it. Going into this I didn’t intend on making more than one but there has been some interest.
Absolutely!!
Yes, it's called the Mitch Hitch, available from Australia.
Привіт з України !😊
Hope all is well!
