probably the best of their unreleased songs. only radiohead could have something like this and not really do anything with it. a lot of bands would kill to have this song in their catalogue
+Micah Buzan agree, and the the lyrics could be interpreted as maybe commenting on things like government surveillance fitting the whole hail to thief subject matter
This video is taken from the Meeting People is Easy documentary released in 1998, so it was actually written in OK Computer era or earlier. The songs released for the OK Computer OKNOTOK (I promise, Man of War, Lift etc) are all old songs, I remember downloading them on my 28K modem in '98.
This version is it for me. Got me through some hard shit. So much respect for these guys. You can see how depressed they are in this video. They hate the tour. You can hear their pain in this ballad. But they fought through. Their strength gave me the strength to get away from my abusive ex. You all deserve more. I will be your backbone of you need one. This gem is beautiful and brings me to tears still from 1998.
I think this will always be the best version of this song. It's not only the perfect "tempo"... it's all the spirit of this video... and how the song is perfectly coherent with that sketches of interview and the idea of repetition they give... and that impulse of sincerity that takes Thom when he speaks about becoming liars and hypocrits. Incredibly moving.
Is it? I hope it sounds just as good. I had an old mp3 of this when I was about 10 in 2000 when Napster first came on the scene. I’d love to hear it again.
I love MPIE. I just wish there was a recording of this version of the song without all the talk over. For some reason the bass of Thom's acoustic hits harder in here than anywhere else I've heard it. It's F&*king awesome.
''You will become a hypocrite. You'll become a liar. You'll try and paper-up your own cracks and... you know. And everybody does it. And that's what being an adult is. And then you have babies and... that's it.'' Thom Yorke, Meeting People Is Easy
jackielegs I really wish they would. So long ago I had this version when I was about 12, without the talking obviously, and I lost it after going through computer problems. This is by far their best version of it
ah god they're so good i can't stand it!! please release an album with follow me around, big boots, true love waits and others like it! i'm begging you! that was the best era!
I had hours upon hours of Radiohead live and bootleg songs, borrowed off Napster and Limewire. Those were the Wild West days of music “sharing”. I miss the hard drive with all that music. (I’ve also always supported my boys buying albums, merch, and saw them play in support of Ok Computer).
@iamthebubb Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change a thing a thing about MPIE. But I would like to see Radiohead do another docu type film. I think the mood of it would be completely different this time around. They've all grown up and seem a lot more comfortable with themselves and where they're at.
That's how I feel too. Same with True Love Waits. Still ace just doesn't live up to my expectations. Nothing would after you've been waiting for it for 20 years.
I LOVE this song! I wish it would make it onto a rarities release. NOT a bootleg, a real release from Radiohead themselves. Thom is so brilliant. I love everything I ever heard from him and Radiohead. PEACE OUT!
They should release this version on spotify or whatever (without the talking over it obviously) they will have the MPIE stuff if good quality I assume.
I wish they would release this exact version minus the talking. I've been listening to this since I was super young. Napster had this version without the interview, it was just cut a lot shorter. It was about 1:35 seconds and I would play it over and over again.
@wurble To be honest i liked that it was so depressing, not that you want non radiohead fans having another excuse to call them depressing but the documentary was amazing.
@LongviewRocks I agree with you in one point: its a shame that a great song like this one never had been properly published, like many others who are constantly on the concert lineups. But if you listen to Radiohead long enough, you'll realize that they simply cannot be cast in one genre. They're always trying new things, keeping their sound fresh. Sometimes it pleases a lot of people (Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows) sometimes it doesn't (Amnesiac, King of Limbs). But that's why they are great!
"You will become a hypocrite, you’ll become a liar. You’ll try and paper up your own cracks… and that’s what being an adult is all about. Then you have babies and…that’s it."
Damn.... reading in here that some of you have this recording without the interviews over the top??? If any of you lovely lot that had that would be so kind to get that to me, I would be beyond happy/grateful!!! I've been obsessed with this version for years so when it came out and it was just Thom and a guitar, I was underwhelmed. Again, you'd make a mega-fan mega-happy!
@@moonshapedbear Thank you for the clarification... Note to Radiohead, or the filmmaker from Matthew McConaughey.... "It'd be a lot cooler if you diiiid...." ;)
@sodacakeblues We've already got "True Love Waits". I feel that just like with "My Iron Lung" (the version on 'The Bends' is the same one featured in the 'Live at the Astoria' concert, if you weren't aware), I don't think a studio version could match the live version's brilliance. It's not too hard to find an mp3 of the Pinkpop '96 version of "Lift" if you look for it, and again, I don't think that could be topped by a studio version. As for the other two, I agree, they need to be released.
I know there is a version on the Italian BBC Sessions album "Other Colours". Not sure how easy it is to come by those, but I have a U.S. reissue, possibly unofficial, from a few years ago. There isn't any talking on that version.
when will they release this onto an album? This & Big Boots (Man-o-War), Lift (fast version) & True Love Waits. Not that it matters if they are commercially released - it won't make them better songs - just that they deserve to be released as much as anything else they've done because these 4 songs all amongst their greatest songs (hard choice).
@wurble I thought the documentary wasn't open enough. I don't want a jovial Radiohead, I want a Radiohead open about what their songs mean and how they feel about their place in the world.
she starts to ask him a question about ok computer and then becomes too nervous to continue. Then he makes a comment on what type of watch she's wearing to ease her nerves
As much as I love the studio version, I can't help but come back for the bass on this guitar, it's just amazing
exactly... I feel the same.
This version is far better than the studio one
This will come in Kid A/Amnesiac 20th Anniversary remember this!
Wtf you're a prophet

Yes but which version?
It’s nothing on this version
No matter how many versions they played after this one, I think the tempo of this version is just the best they ever tried for the song...

Thom Yorke, what can I say.
Music flows through him, the man and musician being so prolific for so long. I love his whole back catalogue.
Anyone here after seeing the premiere? I wish they had cleaned up this version and released it. Love the band joining in.
Yeah, I was underwhelmed by the studio version... Wish it was like this or like the video of Atoms for Peace doing it in Oakland. Needs the full band.
would have worked pretty well on hail to the thief, if it would be on any of their albums it would have been that one
+Matt Wilkinson Yeah, his voice even sounds like 2003 Thom Yorke here.

My favorite Radiohead song. I harbor the sad suspicion that they've moved so far past it that it'll never see an official release.
Mine too, but have faith my brother! :)
That’s what I have been fearing. Seems like that was the case 9 years ago as well.
