LYRICS Late last night, I went for a walk, Down by the river near my home. Couldn't believe, with my own eyes, And I swear Ill never leave my home again. I saw a man walking on the water. Coming right at me from the other side. Calling out my name; do not be afraid. Feet begin to run, pounding in my brain; I don't want to go; I don't want to go. No, no, no, no, no I don't want to go. Mmmmmmm
The song is based on a nightmare Tom Forgerty had. In the dream he was walking along a riverbank at night and saw a man floating over the water and calling out to him. He turned to run, but the thing's head was in front of him. He turned the other way and ran, but this disembodied head was always just behind him, calling his name.
This always reminds me of a dream I had: I was in my apartment on the 20th floor when I heard and incredible rumble and the ground shook. I ran to the window to look. It seemed my apartment building was in a wooded area alone near a beach. Thousands of animals were migrating all together from the east to the west. Deer, bear, skunks, lions, moose and all birds in the sky. They came to a stop all around the building and laid in rest. In the distance a crowd of people were gathering at the beach and resting on their knees. I could see a glint of light. Suddenly a giant hawk busted through the glass and chased me around the room until all I could do was leave. I cautiously left the building, the hawk no longer followed. When I exited I was met with the sea of animals all resting calmly as if waiting. A lion laying next to a deer turned toward me, a bear gave a small roar, but none moved. I slowly made my way through the animals to the beach. I came to the people on their knees in the sand. I asked what was happening but got no reply. Everyone was fixated on the water. I made my way to the front of the crowd and that's when I saw what drew their attention. There was a man, not in the water but on it. Walking toward us. I got on my knees and watched as he came closer. He was tall and thin and dark. He had long dark wavy hair and beard and was wearing sunglasses. When he got to the beach some distance to my left people started reaching out but never stood. He had something in his hand. As he held it out to people they would reach to touch it. It was a piece of cloth that was tattered and orange in color. When some people reached out for it the cloth would move away from them. The man didn't move it. The cloth its itself would shift away from grasp as if it were moving in the wind. He made his way toward me. People reached and those that were able to touch the cloth seemed to feel some sort of elation. I was so confused but also curious. Finally, he came to me and held out the old cloth. Partly out of immense curiosity, but mostly uncontrollably I reached out and touched the cloth. He looked at me and smiled and I felt this wave of pure joy rise up inside of me and I didn't understand why. Nor did I care. Then I awoke.
I am certain the man in your dream was Jesus Christ and the orange cloth represents His Bride, that select group among Christians who are those in closest relationship to Him. (Orange is the color that represents His Bride.) The reason the cloth "evaded" the touch of some is that they did not have sufficient commitment to God to be accounted worthy of that close relationship with Christ. The cloth was worn and tattered because that is how the world of men's systems and half-hearted Christians treat those who are wholly His. The joy you experienced comes from that realization that you can be received and closely related with the Creator of all. Now there is more in the earlier part of the dream but I want, first, to ask a very personal question of you; do you have any knowledge of the Creator and have you ever desired to know Him?
Heck of a dream! It kind of reminds me of a book I enjoyed reading titled 'In the Wet' by Nevil Shute. The ending was eerily similar to your dream. Not exactly, but in the ballpark.
Wow! This is the first time I have ever heard this song, and it is beyond powerful!! The lyrics are absolutely spell-binding and definately makes me think that they are about to look Death in the face. Incredible!
I saw lucky enough to see them at Fillmore West, SF in 3/69 when this was their only album so they played a lot of the songs on CCR. After 50 years I can't remember what all they played, but I know they were great (along with Jethro Tull and another band called Sanpaku which apparently never made it big.) I was 18; it was my first concert ever.
I was at Filmore West too. Saw CCR, Janice Joplin, Jethro Tull, Jimmy Hendrix and many others. I was in the Navy at Treasure Island, just 20 years old. The experience is forever burned into my memory and my being!! There will never be another time like it. When I play Walk on the Water I can feel the same voice calling to my soul. But, it ain't my time to go! Not yet!
This song is really damn powerful to me. Was in the woods one day that had a small lake that the mafia back in the day would dump bodies in. At night I was right by it, had a flashlight out and shined it toward the lake. And there was a man right in the middle of the lake, looked like a shadow figure, walking right towards me on the water. This song has always reminded me of that ever since.

If you ever want to see the difference between the Golliwogs and CCR, this song is a great place to start. John Fogerty grew so much as an arranger from 1966 to 1968. The Golliwogs version is good and enjoyable. This version has balls and muscle.
