  • The Tulip flower is used as a symbol of Parkinson’s disease around the World after Dutch Horticulturalist Van der Wereld who had Parkinson’s created a special variety to symbolize the disease.
April is #WorldParkinsonsMonth and is used to create awareness that if treated well, Parkinson’s patients can live near-normal lives. People living with advanced Parkinson’s commonly experience increasing disability over time, despite high levels of medication.
59 years old, Mr Uttam G. Dhulla started showing signs of the disease in 2003. His condition worsened over the years, despite being on high doses of medications, leading to severe OFF periods between doses, and severe hand and body tremors, alternating with disabling dyskinesia (uncontrollable body dancing). His condition started taking a toll on the entire family.
By the time the patent came to Global Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, for a consultation with Dr Pankaj Agarwal, Head, Movement Disorders Clinic & In-Charge, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program, Global Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, he was disabled with both extreme dyskinesia and debilitating rigidity and tremor. Under the care of our expert team with Dr Naren Nayak, a Functional Neurosurgeon, Mr. Dhulla underwent Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery.
This complex procedure is performed on patients with advanced Parkinson’s and involves implanting electrodes into the patient’s brain attached to a pacemaker in the chest to control the motor symptoms caused by the disease. Following the transformative procedure, the patient had a short and successful recovery. He had an excellent response with complete resolution of dyskinesia and greatly improved OFF symptoms, allowing him to live his daily life better.
Watch this video to know how Parkinson’s was not the end of the road for Uttam G. Dhulla.
