    Debating using these. My only question, if these plastic / composite reeds are so much better, why hasn’t an OEM gone to a similar design?

      They are better in terms of when the break you replace them and keep going. If the steel ones break it usually damages the motor. I laid believe the metal ones are cheaper to mass produce.

      Mercury was using carbon fiber reeds

    I have a couple areas where the reed flaps have carbon build up on the read stopper and on top of the reed flap. Just one or two out of six in the assembly. Any odea what would cause that and if that is a definite reed to replace? They are stainless reeds from an outboard.
    Also I noticed the metal reed stoppers aren't all the same height from away from the reeds. Should I bend them to be the same?
    Thanks for sharing. I have the engine apart now and could use the information.

      I would replace the metal with any other upgraded glass ones because the metal ones brake and get sucked into the engine. Car I could be from excessive oil from a leaky carb or bad spark plug. They should all be sealing against the cage idk if bending them will
      Get it right .

      @@DelcoJoe the replacements I bought are Boyesen carbon fiber reeds. In your opinion do they perform better than a stainless reed material? If so why? Would you still block the surface flat using the carbon fiber? The reed block surface looks as though it has a coating with raised channels to contact the reeds. Just sand until they are all touching at the same time? Thanks for the reply.

      @@jimdrechsel3611 if you install them and you can vidably see leak your reed valve is technically “leaking” so in that case you would need to “lap the valve” . What’s better glass or stainless. No clue but I know if I had to choose for my engine to chew one up I would much rather it be glass then stainless. The stainless are know to crack and snap.

    ITHOUGHT THE REED BLOCK HAS A COATING ON THEM TO CUSION THE REEDS ARE YOU DEFEATING THE PURPOSE OF THE COATING AND CUSION OF THE REEDS ? AND MY STEEL REEDS ARE FROM 1994 AND WORK IN GOOD SHAPE WILL YOUR REEDS YOU INSTALL LAST THAT LONG

    • @DelcoJoe
      @DelcoJoe  Před 9 měsíci

      No you do not remove the coating, the reeds will last longer then the original

      I have a 25 hp mariner .my reed gage is like a v shape. . I only have 2 screws on each side. So I can just change them out. Or do i need a new reed cage cause some of the coating is wore off. Just thinking about it to. Cause there reeds has 5 screw holes. I dont think it would matter what is you thought on this

      @DelcoJoe  Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@larrybalowski946 if it’s completely gone you probably need new cages because the reed has to actually seal, remember the reed is a valve much like a 4stroke valve.

      @@DelcoJoe thanks for feed back so fast great job on your videos. If a space stuffer r is added between Does that increase hp? More gas more hp? Me used build motprs when I was young closer the head on valves would increase whats your thought about a say 1/4 spacer. ? .

      @@larrybalowski946 the stuffer puts it closer and it just gives a finer idle as well as smoother powerband no real hp gain
