This time around, I'm joined by Markus Vanhala of the bands Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum to trade some riffs and compare Melodic Death Metal to the Melodic variety of Metalcore (which is directly inspired by the 90's Melodic Death Metal scene). I've been planning to do this video with Markus since December of last year, but him being such a busy person, it took a long time to get it done properly. We finally made it happen and I'm really happy with it. Hope you enjoy it (I also dig that Markus showed off by using a different guitar for every clip hehe).
Mix and master done by myself too.
I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE MUSIC. Please support the bands in any way you can.

So what are YOUR favorite Melodic Death Metal bands and Metalcore bands?
i really dont like Metalcore. Melodic Death Metal maybe Sarcofago and Blasphemy
Melodic Death Metal: Intestine Baalism, Grenadier, (two of the instrumental tracks of) Arghoslent, Dungeon Serpent, the first At The Gates album
2000's Metalcore: Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, August Burns Red, Bullet For My Valentine
2010's Metalcore: old Asking Alexandria, old Bring Me The Horizon, the last three The Devil Wears Prada albums, Currents, the second EP of Polaris, the new Invent Animate album, Landmvrks
Not a big fan of melodic metalcore, but Undoing Ruin by Darkest Hour is a really good album.
Favorite metalcore is none. Amon Amarth and Carcass are my favorite MD bands. I don’t get the hype of At the Gates.
At the Gates -Slaughter of the Soul was the Template for both
Markus Vanhala is the main songwriter of "Insomnium Gatherum", but he chose "While We Sleep" by Ville Friman and "Friction" by Mikko Kivistö: great humbleness
Also, having mixed his tracks, it made me realize how tight of a player he is.
Melodic death metal is my favorite. And Markus is great. Insomnium is one of my favorite bands.
Markus is fantastic! Being able to mix his guitars and listen to them in isolation showed me how tight he is.
Let's not look past the fact that you chose the great early wave of metalcore for your picks. Definitely had some great riffage and song writing in those days.
Thanks man! I grew up with that genre, so I must have some deep cuts.
Early metalcore? Maybe you mean melodic metalcore, because early metalcore is Integrity, Earth Crisis and blah blah blah. If you look that it's melodic metalcore, then there are tracks from 2003-2009, early melodic metalcore is Undying, Prayer For Cleansing, Aftershock, Intercede.
@@xhellscythexearth crisis has some dope stuff
@xhellscythex you forgot Cradle of Filth
No@@red420noscope
Some other honorable mentions.
Melodic-death:Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, The Black Dahlia Murder, Mors Principium Est, Dark Tranquility, Orbit Culture, Avatar, Hypocrisy, Carcass
Metalcore:Bullet For My Valentine, early Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Trivium, Unearth, Shadows Fall, Caliban,Bury Tommorow, Ice Nine Kills, God Forbid, Architects
Also Mors Principum Est, Kalmah, Be'lakor
this is melodic metalcore
Omg. That's unbelievable. I love Markus... It really happened. Congrats, that's an amazing Collab.❤
Hey thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Melo death slays every other metal genre by far dude
2000's metalcore is awesome but, the Melodeath is just "Beyond".
Thanks to : InFlames, CoB, A7X, Killswitch, DT, Insomnium, ATG, BeLakor, Kalmah, HSB, Parkway Drive, and all 🤘
Aka Finland and Sweden vs Australia and the US
Lol basically
Great video and such a sick collab. Markus has some really sweet guitars!
I’m extreme jealous of his Jackson guitars collection
really cool that markus is playing some of his own riffs aswell, amazing video!
Hey thank you so much! And of course! He must include himself too.
@@jojoplaysmusic did he pick the riffs or how did it go? did he know all the riffs already and just quickly recorded a playthrough or what?:)
@@verminblood8658 I let him choose what he wanted to play, then he sent me his list for confirmation. I don’t know if he already knew all the songs or if he learned them for the video, but he did program his own drums and recorded guitar and bass. I did all the mixing and mastering.
sick collab!!!! I love it!
Dude I love this video. These are some of my favorite bands so I'm very satisfied with your picks
I’m glad! Thank you for watching :)
OMG!Markus!!!! playvideo?!! I'm soo happy😂
A fan of both (especially when they have both clean and harsh vocals). I'm just here to headbang to sick riffs.
OMG, IT'S GORGEOUS!
Great vid, watched for Markus then appreciated your playing and taste. And that Morbid Angel t-shirt is SO super new - needs a few washes to look aged haha!
Hahaha thank you so much! Yeah I take good care of my metal merch, I want it to last me years.
I also have a special appreciation for Metalcore as it was the first time I heard metal music that I really enjoyed as a youngster, bands like Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Parkway Drive in mid-to-late 2000's. I also got love for Unearth, Bleeding Through, Shadows Fall, and a small handful of others that are still around. My favorite Melodeath bands have got to be In Flames, At the Gates, The Black Dahlia Murder, Heaven Shall Burn, and Neaera.
You can really tell how darkest hour became a melodic death metal band and not metalcore
Favorite Melodeath Bands: Children Of Bodom, Omnium Gatherum, Insomnium, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity
Honorable Mentions: Soilwork, Mors Principium Est, Amorphis, Kalmah, Bloodred Hourglass, Horizon Ignited, Black Dahlia Murder, Scar Symmetry, Before The Dawn (I could keep going but It'd be a wall lmao)
Favorite Metalcore Bands: All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, Bleed From Within, Threat Signal, As I Lay Dying
Honorable Mentions: Spiritbox, Parkway Drive, (old) Asking Alexandria, (old) Bring Me The Horizon, August Burns Red, Of Mice And Men, Unearth
Love Markus, Omnium Gatherum has been my fav band forever
Love both
Love it!
Oh no! Thank you Jojo, for making this great music.
Damn Markus has some cool Jacksons
Most them custom shop 😤
for melodic death metal that are great: Children of Bodom, inflames, ablaze my sorrow, at the gates, dark tranquility, callenish circle, sentenced, god dethroned, stortregn, arch enemy, and beneathe just to name a few.
Idc what you think of metalcore. The intro to six and darkest hour's early discography are amazing. That's coming from someone who cares little for most metalcore.
Hey Markus good to see you
They’re both really similar genres.
I miss Norther.
Melodic Metalcore is its own subgenre which pulls from Melodeath. A lot of Darkest Hour’s stuff can easily fit into that category
Okay, those are some tight choices by Markus, ngl.
Honestly, this all sounds like melodeath to me. Cool Morbid Angel shirt
Dude got Markus Vanhala on video lol great!
Melodic Death Metal is one of my favorite genres. It's Death Metal, but with more accesible and easier listening stuff. Early Killswitch Engage is some of my favorite Metalcore and I don't like many Metalcore bands. I also like August Burns Red.
Markus Vanhala raise an army, then we will fight for him!
I like both but In Flames, insomnium and Dark Tranquillity changed my life. Also At The Gates laid down the riffs. Let's not bicker and enjoy this amazing music.
Melodic death metal was lacking the groove of hard-core but metalcore never reach the imaginative heights of Melo death. Thy are different and great.
yes the Gothenburg trio is awesome and really satisfying.
Old school metalcore has some great bands and some really good riffs.
This is melodic metalcore
Old school metalcore is 90s bands like Earth Crisis, Disembodied, Zao and Integrity
Excelente toque, amigo, saludos desde Colombia.
Gracias, saludos!
Is it just me or does Markus kinda look like John Travolta in the thumbnail? 🙃😆
Anyways, awesome collab. You as well as Markus have played a very good choice of Melodic Death Metal and Metalcore 🎸🔥🤘 greetings from Lotasticland
Hmmm really?
@@jojoplaysmusic look up John Travolta in the movie 'Battlefield Earth' 😆
music was cool! Talking at the end was weird, but keep the music coming.
_that zoolander face in the thumbnail tho_
Im literally him
@@jojoplaysmusic he just like me fr
Misery Signal and Fear My Thoughts is missing
I just saw Omnium Gatherum in Detroit a couple months ago and it was one of the best shows I think I’ve ever been to and being an old sack of $hit like I am I feel like that is saying something.
Vanhala is the lord ethereal ambiance
I would say that older metalcore and Melodeath are very similar like depending on the song you can mistake them for each other
Dark tranquillity?
Love metalcore😎👍
Love metalcore🤟😎
finally got a video explain my taste of music to gf 😂🎉
No Hypocrisy??
What exactly is the difference between melodic death metal and metal core!?
Most of the time they sound pretty similar to me.
I guess it’s the breakdowns and influence of Hardcore in Metalcore. But yeah, 2000’s Metalcore like these bands sound pretty similar.
@@jojoplaysmusic Oh... True! Breakdowns are a staple of metalcore!
one is good the other is crap
Metalcore from the late 2000's and 2010s all had Melodic Death Metal influence. Previous to that, Metalcore was a lot more ...unga bunga? Look to early ZAO, or Living Sacrifice (albums like Reborn and The Hammering Process). Mostly just metallic hardcore, another would be like Yellow Machinegun.
@@Kataxu Yeah, Converge woud enter in that category too.
No Kalmah?
I would’ve played “Swamphell”
@@jojoplaysmusic
Share the link bro i can't find it!
Favorite mdm bands - Inferi, Dead World Reclamation
Favorite metalcore bands - Bleed From Within, Miss May I
Era album by Bleed From Within is fucking sick. Scott is a beast!
More like Melodic Death Metal vs Melodic Metalcore!
That's exactly it
Understandably ppl here tend to prefer melodeath, but lots of metalcore have killer riffs too. Me myself im more of a core guy
Old man's child video would be interesting
I might include them in a video with other similar bands. I do enjoy them quite a bit.
Little bit unfair in that all the metalcore rifts are black metal inspired - it's like the only thing that can stand up to melodeath
I think it's funny that Markus picks really famous songs that everyone knows and you are resorting to picking alot of deep cuts that the bands don't even play live. Like KSE would ever play Reject Yourself live lol.
I just simply chose my favorite songs from those bands :)
To be fair, Six is a staple All That Remains song. Though it's not played as much as, say, This Calling, Six is quite known. So is AILD's Confined and August Burns Red's White Washed (White Washed in particular appears to actually be one of their biggest songs).
Hello! Melodeath my Opinion is Insomnium Dark Tranquillity and Bel'akor. I dont listen Metalcore bands..
All the riffs for both subgenres are basically melodeath until the hardcore style screams and clean vocals kick in. Then its metalcore.
I see no difference)
The other guy’s amp sounds better
Metal core is not melodic death metal that s the point
This genre is more than trad metalcore
Не пойму
Маркус что играет одновременно в двух коллективах ? Википедия так показала ....
@@counterflare
Let us tell the truth: if it was jot for European melodic death metal there would be no sub genre called "metalcore" or "deathcore". It is all METAL, my Dudes and Dudette's. 😂🤘🤘🤘🤘
Well if it wasn’t for Melodeath, Metalcore would probably just go in the direction of bands like Converge and Deathcore would be only bands that take inspiration from Suffocation, Internal Bleeding, and Devourment.
Google "melodic metalcore"
@@jojoplaysmusic don't forget metalcore band like:integrity, ringworm, earth crisis, disembodied and hatebreed
