Cal I feel like you missed a big opportunity here to talk about the historic issues of the town/ local authority and why that has contributed to the current poor economic situation and the knock on effect on peoples health eg. Closure of the mines, lack of industry. Great vid but there’s so much more to it than fast food!

He would rather be judgmental than actually use his brain

Because letting people blame their inability to put food down on external factors isn't a great way to go
@@cheeksmcclappinn I don't think people are blaming it on external factors. A lot of people don't have the luxury of choosing foodstuffs that, athough healthier, appear more expensive than a pizza in Heron's (I can't imagine how shit those pizzas taste). Opening a gym and charging £33 for a month of membership (12 month contract) isn't going to change anything. More clubs, such as running clubs, cookery classes, walking clubs etc, that are free and accessible are really what is needed. Education at a young level is fundamental. The smoking habit has been broken, but not the eating habits. Frankly, Ebbw Vale is no more different than any number of towns and cities across the UK.
There was a lot of talk about prices but somehow the word 'poverty' never appeared in the video. Might be wrong but I'm pretty sure Blaenau Gwent is the most deprived local authority in Wales overall. There's a pretty linear relationship between poverty and obesity. Not to take individual agency away from anyone - your body is still your responsibility - but I wonder how much that gym costs. An economic barrier for some and a hurdle for plenty more (not that they're jumping hurdles eyyyoooooo gottem).
I really wouldn't bring gym costs into it. People buy shitty ultra-processed food and love stuffing their faces with it because that's what it's designed to do. It's designed to make you over-eat. Studies show that ultra-processed food causes depression and equally people crave ultra-processed food when they are depressed. Let's not even start with micro-plastics. It's never going to change.
Food choices, they mentioned a couple of times how "healthy foods" cost more than processed foods. Def a link between poverty and health.
So true!
@@justfasial01last i heard; dominoes and drugs cost more than salad and water
@@jameswrp drugs like stimulants make you lose weight cuz they kill your appetite
Think this video missed the mark a bit…Came across a bit too London boys visit and laugh at a deprived Welsh town. Unfortunately this type of town is common across the whole of the UK & most people’s realities.
Made me laugh how they come here nice to their faces then slagged them off as soon as they walked off.
Two posh gits laughing at the poor sums up this country in one.
@staceymarie5125 maybe people should stop being fat and dumb
I was just thinking this. They’re reacting as if no other town in the UK is like this 😂. In every city/town majority of the places have tones of fast food restaurants etc.
I'd rather be a fat cunt, than have a face like Cal tbf.
Nah I agree with him, I'm from a wealthy part of southern england too and travel to areas very close to Ebbw Vale sometimes for work. People are genuinely very lazy and unwilling to learn or take control of their situation.
To make a point in defence of the Welsh Valleys (as a welshman) since the decline in the job roles in places like Ebbw vale, as like many Valley communities. Plus the decline in support for the people living in these towns and the rise of cheap and easy food venues which are normally much cheaper then the "healthy shops" which is what has caused the epidemic in places like Ebbw.
Support is needed for these communities from the Welsh government with access to things like healthy start wales, job improvements and opportunities and a real world investment is needed here. The NHS have programs but the waiting list is 3 years plus for people who are suffering with obesity. 2-4 years waiting for drug programs.
I hope that this helps to provide some context to the video, as it does highlight a major problem in wales.
I feel like every thing you investigated is applicable to every single small/medium sized town in the UK. Fast food deals in windows, lack of fruit and veg shops, fast food chains.. the list goes on. In terms of what makes Ebbw Vale the ‘unhealthiest’ probably links back to the 80s when the mines & other secondary sector industries closed down and there was a lack of investment into the town. This resulted in many towns like this, but Ebbw Vale being one of the worst effected, having a very low income population & a severe lack of opportunities. Unfortunately, this has continued into the 21st century and the result is what you see today - a population with a small town mindset, lack of education on healthy eating, and easy unhealthy options all around them. Not the populations fault, more so the macro impact of a lack of investment in the area.
So many excuses for the fatties, it’s not hard to go to the supermarket and buy rice pasta potato’s protein fruit and veg and cook yourself
What's the betting, that if the amount of fresh fruit and veg shops tripled (in every single town) that absolutely nothing would change, other than those fruit and veg shops going out of business. And fruit and veg (plus milk and meat) are not taxed in the UK.
@@johnmitchell2269 yep you know that I live outside of London but travel every day to work there and there’s so many different take out shops, do I go in them? Nope cos I already have breakfast and lunch cooked and made at home from the food shop I did at the start of the week lol, it’s just weak minded people making excuses for them selves
News flash, this is everywhere in the UK. Not saying this to have a go at you for being out of touch but this is the reality of the UK, it's not all London and personal trainers and chefs etc. Alot of people in small towns which once relied on industry are now in tatters as the industry has dried up, less work for "low skilled" workers, poor transport etc leads to unemployment which means less money which means of course you're gonna get 4 pizzas for a quid over 4 oranges. Ultimately everyone is in charge of what they eat and how much they excersise but it's not by chance that the most unhealthy places are the most impoverished.
If you don’t live near a dense city in the uk, you’re fucked basically.
You can get a healthy weekly shop for £30 in the uk
Most people in the uk can afford that so what you’re saying is blatantly wrong

There was a cool opportunity here to explore and highlight some of the systemic reasons why small, underfunded towns have an obesity problem, but the extent of the "investigation" was pretty underwhelming. There's a reason why there's only fast food places, there's a reason why the people in such rural areas are depressed and lazy, but most of the real factors were ignored and left the video feeling pretty surface level
its a bit half-arsed just to say "they should make veg cheaper"
agreed
Agreed
I think that's a fair comment, although this is Calreezy's channel, unlikely to produce actual investigative reporting.
@@dyoutube439 I agree. That's not the direction of his channel.
Well considering the fact that drugs and overeating both originate from anxiety and depression, it would be prudent to look at the socio-economic status and more importantly the study in detail the type of jobs most men there are engaged in, since, low paying labour jobs require husbands to be out of house all the time that leads to problems in marriage and affects the child in the house too.
what is this absolute bottom tier journalism haha two skinny lads from london visit iceland and farmfoods for the first time, wow!! so insightful and challenging questions asked. no mention of cost of living crisis and socioeconomics. the whole video couldve been 1 minute long, "why do you think this town is fat?" "Because theres a lack of healthy alternatives to fast and cheap food"
they are youtubers big man not actual journalists mate.
Cost of living my arse it’s more expensive to get fat. Don’t be dense. These are people who lard about never excercise and spend their money on shit good cause it’s the only enjoyment they have
Bro what were you expecting it’s Calfreezy not the news ffs
The crisis hasn’t stopped other healthier restaurants or stores from existing in other towns
Unfortunately, you've spoken to a minority in a place in which i call home. Not all of us act and speak like that . Our town used to thrive years few decades ago . Due to lack of jobs even ones who are fortunate to work struggle to live / survive . We maybe a statistic of overweight individuals but those individuals will do you a good turn before they do you a bad one
I feel like this could’ve been a really interesting way to investigate the privileges around being able to call yourself ‘healthy’. You mention the prices of fresh fruit and veg but failed to mention how most of this town are materially and culturally deprived.
This is why we are seeing an epidemic of obesity caused by a lack of access and opportunity, something which the government fails to tackle in a multitude of towns and cities across the UK.
I do actually really enjoy your content, I just feel you missed an opportunity here to explore the depth of this systemic issue. Oh and the BMI is a scientifically flawed form of measuring health (rather it focuses on generalised aesthetics at large)
It's a hell of a lot cheaper to eat healthy food than buying fast food lol

This was genuinely the most infuriating video to watch. Maybe you guys mean well, but it’s a bit of a slap in the face to hear you talk about the problem of obesity in the town without really considering why it’s such a problem. I know the prices of food were mentioned, but I think it’s important to note that Blaenau Gwent is one of the most deprived counties in the UK. Things like gym memberships are not necessarily financially accessible and most people are working long hours and don’t have the time to prepare nutritious meals frequently. I don’t think showing up and interviewing random people, then panning to overweight locals just going about their day, is the best way to approach the topic to be honest. It kind of screams entitlement.
Leading with ”do you agree with that” concerning a literal statistic is an interesting method of interviewing. Also going to Iceland and being surprised by the amount of frozen food is a weird one.
surveys aren’t always accurate so what do you want him to ask then ?
Maybe you should look at the job prospects in the town before slatting it.
Love this style of vid hopefully theres more to come.

Im originally from Ebbw Vale and it's so depressing I moved my life to Canada to start again. The one thing I do want to say is The mountain air pub is in another town called Tredegar not Ebbw Vale. Yes it seems depressing but the atmosphere is from the people who live there and I know this will cause an issue with those people. Anyone walking around the town in the middle of the day are people living off the government or construction workers. There are people that are my age (29) who saw the town for what it is and moved away for a better life. My family are still there but the only thing I miss about that place is being able to walk to the mountains. It's the fattest place in the UK because people will not educate themselves on how to live your life. Instead they scrape through school with little education and hang around car parks eating crap. Apart from that you can see the older generation are the bigger people and the younger people of the town actually go to the gym which is called planet fitness near Tredegar.
Think there's a lot of reasons to why. You made a change, why can't they? Again I know there's many reasons to that as well.
I get what you're saying and hope moving away was everything you hoped it would be.
me too.100%
I don't live too far from here, got the Brecon Beacons national park (Bannau Brycheiniog) on your doorstep to get out there, even with the sh*t weather. Biggest issue we got is people attitude towards everything, the valleys are naturally pessimistic and we don't usually get positive things said about where we live so it just confirms this pessimistic attitude .
Biggest issue is the attitude being pessimistic? Not the high rates of unemployment, drug use and poverty?

Fresh food and healthy food is typically more expensive.
I don’t think the working class can afford to eat as healthy as they’d want too. Fresh meat nowdays is over £5 a pack. People don’t have the money for that anymore.
The government needs to help the uk farmers and make fresh food regularly available and more affordable.
this video should be a drinking game on if your gonna say fat to a skinny person and unhealthy to a larger person

One other thing I’ve noticed with fruits and vegetables(though I can’t say if it’s the case with Ebbw Vale) beyond being expensive and needing a tiny bit of work to cook is that they go off obscenely quickly making cooking more annoying and thus a frozen pizza more appealing.
Mate, people eat healthy if they feel healthy. Living in a Welsh shit-hole is gonna make anybody depressed. If you're depressed, you're gonna eat like shit.
That's true but you can choose to work around it or stay fat, i'm overweight and am hoping to move out of where i'm living soon.
Once that happens I'll be working on my health and the rule will be, if I buy veg, I had to use it in 3 days, I'm quite sure you can keep it for quite a bit longer, I think my nans had potatos in a stacker thing for a month or more and they're fine. Plus if they're not, just cut the bits off that aren't ok, like the shoots on a potato.
You can buy frozen fruits and vegetables which contain the same or even more vitamins? What are you people on?
@@temeria1986 true, but they don’t taste the same. Having said that, if I had to choose between frozen fruit or veg, and pizza, and I was looking at losing weight, I’d definitely choose the frozen veg.
If you get loose fruit and veg from any major supermarket it’s so cheap people need to be educated and stop taking the easy option
That's interesting to know. I never knew this about the Uk so thanks for this information.
Obviously there will be rich/well off fat people, but it's obvious that there's a big link between poverty and obesity. Fresh fruit and veg costs more than a meal in pretty much every fast food place you went in, which is outrageous and makes it so difficult to eat healthy. Not only that though, from looking up the sports centre/gym you went in - memberships costs around £32 per month, that's an absolutely unthinkable price for those in poverty. If the money that goes into obesity NHS issues instead went towards lowering fresh food prices, gym prices, etc. then maybe most of this country wouldn't be so fat, thus wouldn't need to spend so much on health issues.
Cooking for yourself is almost always cheaper than fast food. When I meal prep for the week, the cost per meal ranges from £1 to £3. I would recommend a site called Budgetbytes.
Felt like a budget investigative documentary. I liked it a lot
Hits close to home (literally). I live in the next valley over, and I can genuinely say I agree with everything that’s been said about the town. It’s almost exactly the same in a few of the smaller towns around too. Up here, it’s all becoming kebab shops, fast food, frozen foods, ready meals and the like.
Nice to see Cal visit his mother...
After watching the video and reading some of the comments, I reckon there is serious potential for a documentary here! The viewers clearly are intrigued by this town and there's so much more you can explore as mentioned by some comments (history of the town, poverty, jobs, etc). Obviously you probably have loads more video ideas but I think you should definitely go back there and take a deeper look at the issues

Yooo i like how you do this vid like tyler two of my fav CZcamsr doing documentary vid 😊
it would have been interesting to see what it is like for people in terms of jobs, social class, job opportunities, education etc. As someone who grew up with not that much money, a young, single mum, depending on family for help etc, we always had to resort to cheep, unhealthy food as it wasn't a possibility for us to do a big healthy food shop. if you also take into account the rate of inflation, jobs and the wages given, it might change the perspective from people just being lazy or choosing to eat badly to this is what they have to resort to as there are not really many other options, if that is the case that is.
I do wonder if you have the money to be obese u also have the money to do something about it.
However u are right about cost of living inflation etc and that's not something many people can control in their lifetime.
Taking the piss our off people from wales great content
i live in a town called bargoed which isnt too far from ebbw vale and sadly this is a common theme throughout the valleys and many small towns across the uk. i think the main reason people are lazy towards their lifestyle habits is because of the social deprivation in these areas. there is definitely an attitude of settling for less in these tight knit communities due to the poor work and social opportunities and so people have no real motivation to adopt a healthy lifestyle. its really sad that because of the closure of mines and many factories, there has almost been a death to the valleys, and now if you go to most welsh towns such as mine, there are virtually no shops or markets except takeaway places. It makes me so sad that the place i was born has no opportunities and that in order to make a decent life for myself, ill probably have to move out of the area.
unfortunately many towns in the valleys are just ghost towns
i love these more chilled down videos!!

If you fill a town with fast food places then what choice do they have??? Fruit and veg is so expensive. If all you can afford is a frozen pizza then I get it.
Eat less of it? It boils down to calories, people refuse to put the fork down 😂
@@MFaintReal well yea obviously calories but if you're eating fast food 3 meals a day because it's cheaper than fruit and veg. What do you want them to do?? Go hungry?
I mean there is less education around food and what fuels the body etc.
This is how it is in the USA and I agree with the women in the 2 shops, it's a fruit/veg vs frozen/processed price difference and the lack of knowledge or time with many on how to cook from scratch in our fast paced society.
I go to college in Ebbw Vale and live in Brynmawr, would have been interesting if you came over and seen the new development over here with all the new fast food places and shops where the town itself has basically died, leaving us to eventually end up like this

I lived in Ebbw Vale for 6 months or so with my brother and it was honestly the most depressing place I’ve lived, it has just been totally left to rot by the government - and yes, the food is just fast food everywhere!
Why are there 55 fast food places in such a small area? There should be a law against this and processed food in general. Like govt funding for people to open fruit & veges vendors, funds for local agriculture sector, bringing the price down for healthy foods and taxing the unhealthy ones especially these big companies. Both making healthy food less priced and processed food pricey will make it inconvenient for people to get take outs and eat processed food from marts.
Louis Theroux better watch out Freezy is coming for his job 😂😂😂
this is actually so patronising😭
An entire hour and a half gym workout barely burns off 1 Big Mac. A gym is not the cure
Hi Cal enjoyed the video, Maybe make a second part to this where you put on your social media’s that you are going to do a 5k around the town and that all are welcome. Maybe roping in the gym to get involved and help promote a more healthier lifestyle afterwards ?
To combat that problem the town or even the NHS or any combination thereof should start tiny house housing projects around the town arranged around permaculture gardens and greenhouses that house and employ the homeless and hopeless whilst growing fruit and veg (and nuts) that are send offered at super discount places throughout the town offering special deals on salads and fresh cooked veggie stews and soups and generally vegetarian cuisine with free small tasting servings limited to one per person which will hopefully encourage to poor and the greedy to walk from place to place getting their steps in. That is a great way to start.
