I watched these on their first telecasts back in the 1960s (also To Tell the Truth), and I always had a mad crush on Kitty Carlisle. Such a lovely, charming lady.
I saw Kitty Carlisle in her 90s, just a year or two before her death, at Feinstein's in NYC and at Symphony Hall in Atlanta. She was remarkably entertaining: so much gossip, so many wonderful songs. She knew simply everyone in New York's music and arts scene during the 20th century.
Kitty was always a delight. Was surprised to see her turn up on a Bonus Track on Decca's 1943 Original Cast LP for 'Carmen Jones' singing 'Beat Out The Rhythm on a Drum,' and doing an excellent job. She said her grandkids were not impressed with her career though until they found out she had made a film with the Marx Bros.
Kitty's bursts of excitement upon correctly guessing a word, and Jack's eagerness to see the words pop out of the box during the lightning round, were both so adorable and wholesome!!
Jack Carter fulfilled the definition of a mean comedian, though seldom washe clever to create a laugh.Poor Kitty to have such an untalented rogue sit beside her.
I’m not sure about that. There was a lot of annoying behaviour to go around. Danny Thomas and Joey Bishop were unbelievably nasty and arrogant, Buddy Hackett had some major anger issues. Betsy Palmer was as mad as a hatter and couldn’t be quiet. Bob Crane was smug and terrible with the lightening round because he became so flustered he couldn’t think, the list goes on. . . But Betty White, Carol Burnett, Florence Henderson, Peter Lawford, Tony Randall and Barbara Rush were all brilliant players, especially when paired with reasonably intelligent contestants, and a pleasure to watch. Never mind about the many many clueless players 🙄
@@alexrafe2590 I noticed Tony Randall gets angry with himself when he and his partner are losing, but almost always praises the partner when they are winning. I'm pretty sure that was a sign of his character.
"Teenage" might have been classified as a hyphenated word just like "goodbye" was on another episode. And Kitty asking if it was one word or two seemed like something Betsy Palmer would have done.
In the episode where Kitty and Tom Poston played with Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy, they said Kitty and Tom were the first Password players--so maybe Tom Poston was the other demonstration player.
Awesome! But you know what was one of the most striking and unexpected parts of this video? I didn't know Polaroid came out with ANY cameras until about 1965 or so. Koolness!
There are later episodes when Allen gave a demonstration of a Polaroid camera on the show. He took a picture of one of the female celebrities and whichever contestant was sitting next to her at the time!
I guess they had multiple sets of words for the bonus round in between the celebrities and their contestants? I never saw anyone pull a word out like Jack Carter did during this episode!
This being from the year before I was born, it's incredible to think that 1,450 dollars would be enough money to pay off the average mortgage depending on how much was owed 😮
@@elspethcoogan1499 yes, I suppose maybe sleuth because if they said "Sluth" it may sound too much like "Slut" which wouldn't be appropriate for 1962. So yes, let's go with sleuth :-)
Kitty's pretty good at it and Jack's not either. Thought the guy wasn't all too great. There were some rough patches throughout but a good game nonetheless. I can't wait for the next one to be posted!
Wow! Kitty was an amazing person! She WAS "To Tell The Truth" ( I wouldn't even watch the show if she was not on it that particular day), was Chairman of the NYS Council on the Arts for 20 years (not even accepting a penny as salary in this most important role for those two decades), where she doled out every penny that went to the Arts In NYS) ...And was instrumental in the creation of the classic game show "Password'...What a fantastic legacy to leave...This woman was a true legend.
Interesting how they gave Carter so many chances to say Spanking. I guess it was later on that they changed the rule to only being allowed one chance to give the CORRECT form of the word!
I believe the US had the military draft during this time so that might have had something to do with it. It also seems like they had an awful lot of stewardesses and college students.
Not sure whether it would've worked (@the lot easier as an "armchair password quarterback" watching this in 2019 from home on a big futuristic flatscreen monitor LOL) but for "Swing" I might have included the word "undulate"
While I do think Allen Ludden was the best Password host ever, I also liked Tom Kennedy, Bert Convy, and Regis Philbin. They should bring Password, Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, Concentration, High Rollers, and Supermarket Sweep back.
Have you watched the new versions of Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, and Supermarket Sweep that have been on the last couple years? I think they are pretty good.
Kitty had a great laugh. Such a simple show that let's the personality of the guests shine through.
Kitty always dressed so nice. Old Hollywood glamour and class
I watched these on their first telecasts back in the 1960s (also To Tell the Truth), and I always had a mad crush on Kitty Carlisle. Such a lovely, charming lady.
She is wonderful to watch...lovely, intelligent, well mannered, and a great sense of fun about her.
Kitty is such a beautiful and elegant lady.
Kitty Carlisle is so much fun to watch!

Kitty Carlisle was pretty, sophisticated and fun. They don't seem to make people like that anymore.
You just have to be that, and similar people show up.
Both celebrities here lived a long life. Kitty was 96 and a half, and Jack was almost 94 when they passed away.

She was always lovely
Allen Ludden was perfect in this role.
What a lovely person Kitty was.
Kitty's bursts of excitement upon correctly guessing a word, and Jack's eagerness to see the words pop out of the box during the lightning round, were both so adorable and wholesome!!
Kitty was so refined but to see her in a fun environment like this is great. You can tell she is having a blast playing the game.
Jack Carter fulfilled the definition of a mean comedian, though seldom washe clever to create a laugh.Poor Kitty to have such an untalented rogue sit beside her.
Carter is more intent on being cute than on playing a good game.
He's always like that. He and Ray Bolger were the most aggravating guests, by far.

Fun episode to watch, thanks!
"Teenage" might have been classified as a hyphenated word just like "goodbye" was on another episode. And Kitty asking if it was one word or two seemed like something Betsy Palmer would have done.
Kitty just laughs
As a first clue for "Witch" I might have said (in that same witch like voice) "Wickedddddd..."
Oooo… did you see how aggravated Jack Carter got when Ludden didn’t let him finish his joke.
Jack Carter was a really good player. Impressed.
I never knew that Kitty Carlisle was one of the people who demonstrated Password to CBS! Does anybody know if a male celebrity was there as well?
It wasn't Joey Bishop because the show was green-lighted.
In the episode where Kitty and Tom Poston played with Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy, they said Kitty and Tom were the first Password players--so maybe Tom Poston was the other demonstration player.
@@stanbrown32They were also very frequent To Tell the Truth’ panelists
It would have been neat to have shot an episode with the 61 set in color. It was a combination of orange and yellow.
$1450 in 1962 is approximately like $12,100 now (that would pay for a couple months rent - and a trip or two to the casino :-) :-)
1,595.00 would have bought a Volkswagen Beetle ! 🎸
Jack Carter was clearly out of time when he said "jab".

all the years that Allen Lunden and Password was on....he had trouble with that shoot from where he received those clues!!!!

In the voice of the Wicked Witch from Wizard of Oz I would've gone "Wwwwwwicked!" With that laugh at the end...
The male contestant looks like Norm Macdonald! :)
Rough couple rounds to start the game.
Betty White was (by far), my favorite of the guest stars! She was so good at this game! Kitty isn't too bad.

All this grabbing and touching is so unusual to see.
I was glad to see Jack Carter make an exaggerated joke to get the point across to Norma : "Hands off!"
Can someone explain why we can always hear faint “echo” a second or two before it happens?!
It was a dangling participle...haven't heard that since grammer school.
Grammar school taught some of us not to dangle at the end, easier done in writing than in speech.
10:16 The commercials were so short and to the point back then.
I guess another word to prompt "Exchange," could be "Reciprocate."
They sure did have a lot of soldiers on here.

Jack Clark is the announcer.

What is it with these contestants that want to grab the celebrities.
Kitty had some hideous thing attached to her mid section that looked like a large artificial flower.
Did he get cancer from camp Le June. (Spelling)?
That was the first thing that came to my mind when he said it.

Norma is awful touchy lol
Too bad the lieutenant J G went to camp Lejeune...bad effects from drinking water 😢
Why does it seem so random who goes first?
Ok, well Jack Carters ANNOYING!
