      In his defense he was touchy with Bennet Cerf too, it wasn't a touch for gratification, some people are just touchy and that projects confidence as long as you are impartial.
      Carol seem to be having a bad time altogether, even with the other girl she seemed stressed.

    I met Miss. Baker in California many years ago in the early 90's out at the pool where I had a condo in Rancho Mirage in Palm Springs. She was out at the pool that day, and we struck up a conversation. She was so nice, sweet, charming and incredibly funny, and from that moment on we became friends. ❤️

    Bennett Cerf on black and white videotape. We get an idea of how he would have looked on videotape during the original broadcasts of "What's My Line?" from 1950-66 (WML went color in September 1966). It's a shame that CBS chose to erase the videotapes and leave the kinescope recordings instead.

    With our modern flat monitors you can see that the extreme left side of two of the cameras is squeezed together. You can see the brightness of the image is increased where the scan is squeezed. This was all practically invisible or ignored at the time of the broadcast.

      @savethetpc6406 Před 9 lety +3

      ***** Art Trudeau? Yeah, he was *much* too touchy-feely, and Miss Baker's discomfort showed in both her posture and her face. It may have affected her game-play as well. I kept thinking maybe Allen should have said something to get him to stop, but it might have been difficult to do that tactfully while the cameras were rolling. I wonder if he did say something during the commercial break, because Mr. Trudeau seemed to be at least attempting to tone it down a little in his second round with Carroll. To be fair, he didn't exactly keep his hands to himself with Bennett either, but his overly familiar way of touching the bare-armed Carroll Baker was more disturbing.

      SuperWinterborn
      I don't think it's as much that he was "starstruck" as that he was just touching Miss Baker a bit more than was appropriate or comfortable for her. I think "starstruck" refers to being so in awe of a famous person that you find it difficult to talk or think clearly. (See the various definitions and examples given here: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/starstruck.)

    • @SuperWinterborn
      @SuperWinterborn Před 9 lety +2

      SaveThe TPC I used the word "Starstruck" in lack of a more appropriate expression for what I meant. He was obviously thrilled by being so close to the celebs, and Bennet didn't go free of his familiarity either. Regarding Ms. Baker, well she was a woman. He might have thought he had an easier way with her. The most of us know the type, I think. Not a particularly charming way to approach others. Ugh!

      BlueStarDog5 "Honey child" (often spelled "honey chile") was a common term of endearment in the American south. Since it was the last clue and nothing had worked so far, Bennett decided to make a pun. The problem is that "chill" sounds nothing like "child" or "chile", but that never deterred Bennett before. :-)

    @SuperWinterborn Před 9 lety +3

    No one seemed very inspired this evening, but Bennett looked even younger than he did on "What's My Line?" same year. Could it be that the lighting and the background was different?

    • @savethetpc6406
      @savethetpc6406 Před 9 lety +3

      SuperWinterborn
      I was surprised at how poorly almost everyone on this episode played. Some of the words were legitimately difficult to define with one word clues, but the players just kept repeating themselves ineffectually several times -- often repeating clues that were never particularly good or even relevant in the first place. And they missed out on some fairly obvious clues (I couldn't believe nobody thought of "candle" as a clue for "wax", for example). Another skill with Password, I think, is knowing how to use inflection to convey the appropriate meaning or coax the appropriate response, and it didn't seem like any of them used that technique very effectively either.
      I know what you mean about how youthful Bennett looked, but I'm at a loss to explain it. You could be right that the background and lighting were more flattering, or maybe it was some artistry by the make-up man, or perhaps just the fact that the show was probably filmed at an earlier time of day? These episodes weren't live, as WML was, were they?

    • @SuperWinterborn
      @SuperWinterborn Před 9 lety +2

      SaveThe TPC I don't know if the episodes were live, but I don't think they were. Whatever, "candle" should be mandatory when it comes to "wax", among other clues they could have used instead of what they did. But, in general, I think, this was one of those days we all know of. When all forms of communication are slow or delayed, nobody seems inspired, and misunderstandings are more a rule than an exception. It happens to the best, even in showbiz. Don't you think? ;)

    Probably, one of the WORST episodes ever of "Password".
    Loudmouth touchy-feely jerk who was horribly stooooopid at the Lightning Rounds.
    The woman contestant who obviously has never owned nor consulted a dictionary gave some idiotic answers. {Seems that the "Password" producers / crew never tested these people before letting them on stage. My almost 11 year old granddaughter could have done better. 🙃}
    Bennet Cerf owned/ ran a Book company so, I would have thought he of all people he might have a better command of the language. Not so. Crummy clues, crummy answers.
    Carrol Baker ( From "How The West Was Won" ) was the only reason to watch this episode to the end. { Easy on the eyes 😉} She was not a great player, but better than Bennet Cerf.
    hmmmm? How is "nick" NOT a form of the word "nickname"?!? Dictionary man must have fallen asleep.
