- The Sanctuary of Christ the King (Portuguese: Santuário de Cristo Rei) is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in the city of Almada, Portugal.
It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument.
The project was inaugurated on 17 May 1959, while Portugal was ruled by António de Oliveira Salazar who gave his final permission for the project. The giant statue in cement was erected to express gratitude that the Portuguese were spared the horrors and destruction of World War II.
In 1941 the land which was used to construct the monument was acquired. The construction project began in 1949 and took ten years to complete. But it was only in 1952 that the first construction started.
The first inauguration of the complex officially was on 17 May 1959. On the 25th anniversary of the Shrine in 1984, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. A new plan was approved to recondition the grounds of the Shrine and also to build a Sanctuary, which included a rectory, a chapel, administration and meeting halls and exhibition galleries.
In order to support pilgrimage to the site, in June 2004 new spaces in the Sanctuary building were inaugurated, including a dining room for 150 people and two segregated dormitories. This was followed on 17 May 2005, with the inauguration of a 150-person dining area and 80-person meeting hall, in addition to two segregated dormitories, dining room and kitchen.
Improvements to the monument and sanctuary of Christ the King began in 2006. By 17 May of that year, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. In the following year (17 May 2007), the Pope John XXIII hall was opened, containing eight oil paintings.

The monument was erected on an isolated clifftop 133 m above the sea, overlooking the Tagus River left bank.
It is the highest point in Almada, on a plateau dominated by the 25 de Abril Bridge, and close to the Estação Elevatória e Reservatório do Pragal.
It is accessible from Lisbon by car (over the 25 de Abril Bridge east of the crossing), by train through station in Pragal and by ferry over the Tagus, through the port of Cacilhas in Almada.
The monument consists of a trapezoidal pedestal of 82 metres (269 ft) height, formed by four arches and a flat platform, supporting the 28 metres (92 ft) image of Christ.
Its base was designed by architect António Lino in the form of a gate, while the statue of Christ the King was designed by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa.
The four arches of the pedestal are oriented in the directions of the compass rose. The figure of Christ, comparable to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, forms a cross, with its arms extended out facing the city of Lisbon, as if to embrace the city. Due to issues of security and safety, the monument was sufficiently distanced from the cliffs on which it predominates.
At the base of the statue is the observation deck, at 82 metres (269 ft), which enables panoramic views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
Under the statue, occupying a fifth of the pedestal's height, is the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz) with an entrance from the northern facade. This space is distinctly different with its masonry stone, the northern facade surmounted by cross and the other facades containing narrow doors.
Inside two of the pillars is an elevator system with access to the terrace; the statue is 79.30 metres high, and overlooks the Tagus (192 metres above the river).
To the south of the monument is the Sanctuary building, comprising a rectangular body of three wings, with facades covered with masonry brick.

I remember I saw this statue far away from Saint George's Castle (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge) while going on a holiday in Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹 in July 2017. I also saw it at night 🌃 from one of my hotels on the same day.
I haven't been there before but I'm sure it looks fabulous. I might go to visit this statue sometime in the future.

It’s so sad that we were a nation born for Christ to defend his truth his true church and to spread out his gospel around the world to the pagan nations just like it says in the Bible that his name would be known to mankind after being rejected by his own people from Israel so the kingdom of God was taking away from them after being cold hearted priests with selfishness against Christ who they knew very well through the old prophets who god himself had instructed them about his coming and still the Jews ignored him, so what does Jesus do now? Yes he tells them the story about the vineyard that the seed that was planted in Israel was dead it no longer was Bering any fruits so it was also where and where it was? To the pagans in Rome who were converting in a multitude to the point Rome became a Christian state and Christianity began to spread out through out Europe 😊 because the Jesus that they killed his not dead he is alive he resurrected from the dead he is alive among us in spirit it’s so sad when I hear and see so called Christians of this generation being brainwashed with these false teachings etc. we have a true God who was invisible but know we know how God looks like in the person of jesus 🙏 he is the father incarnated in Jesus Christ please don’t get twisted 🙏🥲 that’s Satan twisting the gospel by saying that we don’t know how Jesus looks like that anyone who has an image of him is idolatry which is it true idolatry it’s with false Gods images of animals, money, sports so basically anything that you putting first in your life that has nothing to do with God the true messiah in the image of Jesus Christ, but unfortunately I see my little Portugal dying of faith specially in this horrible generation, there is a message given yesterday the day of the birthday of our lord Jesus by our mother Mary and she begins, my children today you’re celebrating my sons birthday but my son in most homes around the world he is not invited to their homes even tho it’s his birthday but his not being part of his own celebration because he sees that all the gifts are for friends and families, all of the hugs, kisses and happiness is for Santa, yes…. A false image that took place of my son in his own birthday the times that you’re living right now it was exactly the times when I gave birth to my Lord and savior my son Jesus 2000 years ago when the whole world had no faith in God no more and their hearts were so cold as stones and this is why when you look at the nativity scene you’ll see me my Jospeh and my beloved son with the animals and the Shepards and with all the angels proclaiming salvation is here finally while the whole world was in darkness, we were rejected by the world no one wanted to accept us in their homes and so are the days that you are living, only a few homes accepted us in their homes and my son celebrated his own birthday that will invite all who come to his banquet of the holy mass, yes children there is the real birthday of my son where myself, Joseph all the saints, all the angels and all the guests are adoring my son the Eucharistic Jesus where he is giving you all his body and blood for your salvation and for this my children your names will be written in gold in the book of life, pray and pray for the conversion of those who unfortunately didn’t accepted the holy family in their homes so that the angels can go by their homes and touch their cold hearts so they can convert before the time is over, the time is getting very near that my beloved son and I we can’t hold the fathers arm no more but the father he is ready to punish this whole world for their crimes for their evilness now you’re living in a great apostasy and heresy because mortal sin is no more considered sin, adultery is normal in your days killing a human life is normal in your days and God the father had enough of this evil corrupted generation and this is why I and my son are suffering for what is coming for this world because I came for centuries and being ignored, my son has come and being ignored and now the father very soon will come to separate his true children and the children of Satan, convert, convert and pray so you can be save in this huge tribulations of what’s to come. 🙏❤️🇵🇹🇺🇸
