  • The cow hitch, also called the lark's head, is a hitch knot used to attach a rope to an object. The cow hitch comprises a pair of half-hitches tied in opposing directions, as compared to the clove hitch in which the half-hitches are tied in the same direction. It has several variations and is known under a variety of names. It can be tied either with the end of the rope or with a bight.
It can also be used to attach dyneema loops to fixed points or rope to create attachment or fastening points.
The Cows Hitch or Larks head has the slight disadvantage that it will easily untie if load is only applied to one end of the tails, you can follow a couple of variations of the knot to make it secure if your use case dictates load will only be applied to one line. Finishing it with an additional loop to create the pedigree cow hitch or larks head. The tired variation points and additional loop in the knot to have the same result that you get from the pedigree version.
The team at bottom up boats recommend these knot to quickly join pulleys to fixed points or to create loops to hang gear form.
Our favourite use case for the larks head or cows hitch is as the finishing knot in our 10 second soft shackles. If you have not watch our video which demonstrates how to do this we highly recommend it.

Aye m8, thnx for all your vids. Pedigree? In the sense of 'strain', or what?

To be completely honest when I was researching the video I was surprised by all the different names this simple knot had. I did not find a lot of history on the names, pedigree was used be several other creators so I just went for it. I may have to look up old Ashley's knot bible to see if that could shed some light on the subject.
If I was to guess it is down to the fact that it makes it more pure (better) when you are putting load on only one of the tails.
Thanks for being part of the bottom up boats community and for engaging on this update.

I reckon commenting on a vid is the least, but not tiny, help we as viewers can do. And discussions in a comment sections is a good part of CZcams. Cheers!

I’ve been commenting on sailing channels for years and seen many of the small ones grow into big ones. I’m soon to be off myself ⛵️

Born and bread in Oz, been living in Belfast for the last 10+ years. Not that I am knocking them, the largest sailing channels are often more about travel than sailing. We are working hard to make Bottom up Boats one of the biggest pure sailing stations !

@@BottomUPBoatsSo sorry! Wrote comment for different video. Before pressing Send, I came here to confirm the hitch name. And that caused the comment to end up here when it was sent. Surprising feature.
