I don't have an igniter. Does that mean it has to be lit with a match? That's obvious, but it may not be. Not being a plumber and dealing with gas, have to ask.

Parallel is the word your looking for but strait with the pipe works just fine to get the point across.
Also your gas intake pipe should have a flow restrictor on it with the lil arrow head facing into the control box (the arrow head indicates the directional flow of gas for installation purposes). A restrictor is not necessary to get a water heater operational but is necessary for A) prevent pilot light burn outs and B) keep water heater warranties valid. If you purchase a water heater the warranty is void when you do not use a restrictor.
Also if you live in a earth quake volume zone you need to have a earth quake support strap around your water heater too.

Hey we have a GE water heater and the drain valve broke when my son tried to move it water shot out and it got very wet probably inside it also I repaired everything but now the clicker don't seem to be working or it wont light at all what could be the problem?
