      Thanks for all your help, I have a question for you....I’m able to get it to light / fire up when I turn the dial back to the original position which in my case was slightly to the right of letter “ A” ....but soon after sometimes 10 minutes the fire goes out.....any idea as to what can cause the fire to go out so quickly????? Thanks in advance 🙏

      Good morning & thanks for the update. The most likely cause is a dirty electrode. Since your pilot light is going out soon after being lit, you might have a lot of corrosion buildup on your electrode.
      Performing the proper and safe steps to remove your internal electrode to clean it may be the best next step. You can find several videos on CZcams showing the steps.
      Don’t give up. 😎👍🔧🔩

    I own an A. O. Smith model GNR 50 100, purchased in 2010. The pilot light went out. This video was the best one I could find to help me, a female, with limited experience with this task. I followed these instructions in addition to the written instructions. When I pressed the ignitor, I heard a snap noise and saw a flash of light behind the little square window where the pilot is supposed to be. But, I did not see a pilot's flame. IF THE INSTRUCTIONS would have said that the pilot is NOT DIRECTLY behind the little window--that it's actually TO THE LEFT of the window out of direct view, and you have to bend way down and look through the window at an angle, I would have known that I had been successful in lighting the pilot! The next morning, I called a water heater company, explained that I couldn't get the pilot to light and they sent out a plumber. He was all prepared to install a new water heater for $2200 (because parts would take 4 weeks). Before he got started, I explained what I did and asked him to check to make sure I needed a replacement. He immediately said the pilot was lit! We just needed to turn the gas control to ON and adjust the temperature. I said, "Well, where is the pilot?" He showed me where the pilot was and, fortunately, his company didn't charge me $135.00 for the trip. I hope someday, that this helps someone else.

      We really appreciate you sharing this. Awesome job taking this on as a DIY project.
      Compliments to the plumber as well for being honest and trustworthy in the moment.
      The end result saving $2,200.00 and the plumber respected you and didn’t mislead you in actually getting rid of a working water heater. 😁

    Calling the gas company shuts your gas off until a technician clears you in-person (Pennsylvania). You'll need to re-light your pilot once you get service restored.
    Thanks so much! I have this same water heater and this video helped with getting it lit again.
    I have a natural gas line bbq and accidently leaked a bunch of gas when I turned the pipe on. The previous owner had a gas dryer attached to the same pipe (without the dryer-specific shutoff valve) as the barbecue, but I didnt have a new dryer installed yet. As a result, turning on the line put gas into the barbecue as expected, but also dumped gas for 20-30 seconds through the unhooked-up dryer line. I thought I was set (it all was confirmed later as safe), but called the gas company to double check.
    If you call you gas company about smelling gas in any way/reason, they are legally required to turn off the gas to your address. This will cause your water heater pilot light to go off an require it to be re-lit. This video was way more understandable and digestible than the label on the actual tank. This video was a lifesaver!

      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před rokem +1

      Thank YOU!! This means the world to us, no joke! That’s spot on, any sign of gas leak…the company is required to take it very serious.

    You helped me so much with this video! On a side note, I didn’t even think to look for the instructions on the unit. It’s like I’ve become so desensitized to seeing warning and disclaimer labels on everything that my brain automatically filters out the labels that have tiny writing on them. The instructions were RIGHT THERE. Regardless, seeing you go through each step was helpful and gave me confidence to know I was doing it right. Thankfully that seems to be all that was wrong.

      Any update? It may be as simple as a friendly cleaning of the igniter to get that spark to ignite Pilot flame.
      The igniter gathers lots of corrosion over the years, and can get to a point where it can no longer create a spark and hold a flame.
      If that doesn’t solve issue, you may need a brand new igniter, however…before anything… double check that your gas valve is in the fully open configuration.

I do it like you showed, hold down 60 seconds after pushing the button, turn it to on, turn up the heat, it goes "vwoom." But then 60-70 seconds later there's a click. I think that's the flame going out. Any suggestions?

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for watching & it’s very possible that your igniter electrode has corrosion on it. You mentioned flood...It’s possible in the two week span it sat after water made contact with the igniter, a little bit of rust and corrosion grew on the electrode.
      You may just need a simple cleaning with a wire brush and your electrode. There are several videos out there that will show removing panel to gain access to the part that may need a friendly cleaning. Keep us posted.

      there is a pan in the bottom where the pilot/burner assembly is, for ours this was FILLED with rusted metal flakes. I cleaned all this out and the pilot would stay lit. You may want to hire someone for this, as you have to turn off the gas, remove gas lines, etc. to get to it. If you don't know how to do that you should hire someone in. Any basic service call should get you this done if you ask, it only takes a few minutes.

    • @jb888888888
      @jb888888888 Před 2 lety

      @@TheTerryscotttaylor [tl;dr it has been fixed.] We have zero problems with our water heater except after a flood. Every time we have a flood, once every 2-3 years, this always happens. Can't get the pilot to stay lit. I call a plumber, they charge a lot of money, and the problem is solved. This time I decided not to call a plumber.
      A friend came over and removed the burner, thinking it might be a bad thermocouple, but that was fine. While it was open I used a rag to clean out the burner area as I'd seen plumbers do in the past, even though the friend thought that it was already pretty clean inside. After he got it back together again the issue remained the same. One thing some plumbers did that I forgot about until after the burner got put back in was to blow out the gas line, just put their mouth over it and blow in order to remove any possible obstruction. I was thinking about asking the friend over again so we could try that but I didn't, on the theory that we had imposed on him enough. I'm trepidatious about removing the burner myself, worried I'll break something.
      Flash-forward a few weeks, looking at a few YT videos plus letting my brain percolate on the subject. It seemed to me that the air intake was being blocked - after all it did VWOOM for a minute but then cut off. There's an air intake pan under the spot with the burner assembly. So I stuck an old radiator cleaning brush in the air intake, swiped around, and it came out covered in rusty watery yuch. And this was like 2 months after the flood, it was _still_ moist down there! The problem apparently was the "flame arrestor" was clogged. So I used a combination of wiping with a rag-on-a-stick, attempting to stick the end of a shop vac inside (the hole was too small for my shop-vac's narrowest attachment), and then McGuyvering a hair dryer with an old vacuum's crevice attachment duck-taped to it and blowing in the air intake for an hour or two, got it dried/cleared enough to get the flame to stay on.
      "Any basic service call should get you this done if you ask, it only takes a few minutes." Yeah but the cost like crazy. After a flood we can't get the pilot to stay lit and call a plumber. They mess with it for a while, and then it lights. The last time we did this they actually came out three times; once to remove the burner and mess around inside, later in the day to check to see if it was dry enough yet, and then a day or two later. Charged $300 for the three visits. Even in the past, when they or other plumbers have gotten it done in one visit, it takes an hour or more. Maybe they're padding their service to run up the charge, or maybe they're "acting busy" to justify the charge, IDK. But I didn't want to call a plumber unless I absolutely had to. In fact, one of the big plumbing services around here (they have ads on the radio, TV, and in the local Money Mailer), when I called them after the previous flood they flat-out refused to do the service, saying that after a flood the ONLY thing to do is replace the whole water heater.

      Good morning & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. The igniter probe itself may have corrosion leading to interference with the flame.
      In addition, the igniters can gather an ashy substance & a bit of rust overtime.
      You can remove lower access panel & inspect inner igniter using a flashlight. You can even position your phone in a way where you can take a picture of it to get a closer view.
      If it is rusted, corroded, or covered with a layer of ashy substance, it’s time to remove it and clean it. You can carefully clean it by using a wire brush.
      We are assuming your unit is not experiencing any interference with gas... in other words your gas line is still in good condition and your gas valve is open allowing gas to flow to your unit. You may want to double check that the valve itself is in the full open position.
      Let’s start there, keep us posted. Love your Channel name! 😎👍🔧🔩

      @@DIYwithMichaelBorders well just got home from daughters highschool graduation & I turned the pilot to off, turned the dial all the way left till it stopped & press the green button in...I have to take my fingernails & pull it back out....afterwards I just turned my dial back to A & it automatically lights up, so I turn the other knob back to ON & it burned for maybe 4 minutes but it’s back out now.....tomorrow I will see if Lowe’s carries the little igniter switch & I will take out the coupler & clean it to see if that helps.

      Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. It’s very possible that your igniter electrode has corrosion on it.
      You may just need a simple cleaning with a wire brush on your electrode. You will need to remove panel to gain access to the part that may need a friendly cleaning. Any rust or corrosion will degrade the reliability of the constant flame/light. Keep us posted.

    I bought this water heater czcams.com/users/postUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 for use in my bus conversion. I installed it under my kitchen sink and it is fed by a high efficiency on-demand LP water heater. It is both a backup hot water source as well as a water saving device since we have hot water on demand rather than having to wait for the gas on demand water heater to finish its ignition cycle. I decided on this water heater due to the fact that it only draws 1300watts when it's ON instead of the 1500 watts that most Water heaters this size draw. In an RV a couple hundred watts can be a big deal. With very low standby losses, I don't have to worry about excessive power consumption. When propane is not available for our gas water heater, in conjunction with our low flow shower head there is enough hot water available to shower, albeit we won't be taking "hotel showers." Also very happy with the recovery rate of this water heater. Granted, it is quite small, but it does exactly what we need it to do.
